I’m planning on writing a letter to U of M about my continued interest in the school, how it’s my number one school, and the specific programs I wish to pursue there. Should I send the letter via email or by paper? Should I send it to the admissions office or to my regional counselor?

Also, does U of M accept additional letters of rec?

At the bottom of my letter it stated “the most successful students only send us what we require” hence why I will not be sending them any letters on the subject of continued intrest etc.

lesha24, My son sent emails to his specific U of M admissions representative. He did get brief, personal replies back from her. Last year, our son’s letter did not include the statement “the most successful students only send us what we require”. His letter did ask for second semester grades. In sons’ case, he had a 4.0+ all through junior and senior years (he did not freshman and soph years). Son had one “C” on his transcript from sophomore year.

By the way, I believe 1st and 2nd semester grades are required to be submitted to U of M…they were last year.

One reason Michigan may have made the statement about not sending more than what they ask for is that there was a highly publicized student - you can find the links in this forum - last spring who was deferred and he created a very entertaining singing video, making his plea to U of M admissions. Thousands of viewers supported his acceptance and ultimately he was accepted to Michigan last June. I doubt admissions wants to receive dozens of musical or other videos begging to be accepted.

My Counselor as well as my teacher recommended that I re-apply to LSA (I was deferred from College of Engineering). Which is what I did. Wish me luck!

So I have a decent chance of getting in (got the ‘good’ deferral, 35 ACT, all hard classes this year, etc.) but my grades this year that they said I should send in are mediocre. I’ve been told by some to call them to show my interest, but should I do that if there’s nothing notable I’ve done this year for me to talk about?

Does Michigan allow for deferred applicants to send an additional letter of rec from a teacher? If so, would doing so help my chances or would it just be repetitive?

You don’t want to letterbomb them. Chances are that tons of people are doing that and wouldn’t you be annoyed if you got thousands of letters from friends/family of kids who got deferred? Additionally, ace idea with this thread. (: Makes me feel less alone!

just a general question but do they start looking over the deferred applications before february 1st or do they wait and look at them with the other applications?

Between now and April, they will be accepting students…last year there were students accepted in small waves between January and April. My son waited until the end of March before finally being accepted and he was thrilled. Honestly though, it seems that most of the students still waiting in March were ultimately rejected or waitlisted, so I hope you hear sooner rather than later.

I’m really worried about my first semester grades. In the letter I received, they said I can said the grades but it didn’t seem required. If my GPA is not the strongest this semester (it’s similar to what I gotten in the past so far, I guess), should I still send it?

Also, I emailed my region counselor a week ago about an NHS scholarship I was nominated for. She didn’t reply back and I don’t know if I should be worried or not. My boss from my Red Cross internship mailed me a letter of rec that I can send to UofM and recently, I got qualified for an Orchestra award…I really want to send these two things in to my counselor but considering she has not replied to my last e-mail, I don’t know if it is the right decision or not? Please help me out.

@Sportsmom42, thank you! and thanks, i hope so, too. i absolutely LOVE U-M (as i’m sure everyone else on here does…) and i really want to get into the school of nursing. and of course i’m practically going crazy while i’m waiting for my final decision. :

The waiting is very hard, having gone through it. Although my son was ultimately accepted to Michigan and is very happy there now, the admissions process is long, tiring and can be discouraging at times. During the months between my son’s deferral and learning the final decision, I encouraged him to come to terms with the schools he was already accepted to, and to choose the one he thought he could be happy with, but he was so set on Michigan, he couldn’t think of any other place! Thankfully it worked out for him. I wish you all the best over the coming weeks - and really, try not to dwell on this too much - things will work out the way they are supposed to, whether you end up at Michigan or not.

that’s what i keep trying to remind myself…i’ve already chosen a school if i end up not getting accepted so i guess that’s a good thing. it’s is a bit similar to U of M though not nearly as enormous, amazing or, well, perfect. i just really hope that i get accepted and that everything works out.

Same here, basically - I have an alternate (Michigan State University) and I know it isn’t bad, the James Madison school within it is incredibly good. That having been said, that isn’t my number one choice, and having to give up UMich would break my heart into pieces.

so what you’re saying is they are working in like a rolling admission format and we should be waiting for decisions any time? they’ve written that the decisions will be ready early april like billions of times… :S
