[ul]
[li] Strengths: Test scores, passion for ECs, essays, course rigor, recs, stuff I sent them after my deferral[/li][] Weaknesses: GRADES GRADES GRADES
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My strengths…and after my ED deferral, I didn’t give up. I sent them a heartfelt and interesting letter of indicated interest. I sent another letter explaining 5 reasons why they should accept me. I notified them when I was inducted into the Cum Laude Society. They saw that I’m not only qualified, but also am the perfect fit.
[] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Accepted to UNC, Notre Dame, UMich, BC Honors, and Wash U; Waitlisted from Northwestern and Vanderbilt; Rejected from Cornell, Penn, Georgetown, and Tufts (LOL)
[li] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies? AFTER
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to all applicants–whether it is Duke that you will be attending, or another fantastic institution. With the 10% acceptance rate for deferred applicants…I knew my chances were VERY slim. But I NEVER gave up. I sent them good, heartfelt stuff afterward and updated them about new things. And thank GOD I never gave up on them. Today is the BEST DAY EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Decision: Deferred ED

Soccer (9,10,11)
Service Club (11, President 12)
Yearbook (10, Editor 11, Editor in Chief 12)
NHS (11, 12)
Cum Laude (12)
[] Job/Work Experience: Lifeguard (12)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Random stuff, but Presidential Bronze Award (11)
[] Summer Activities: Internship at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine
[] Essays: Common App talked about how driven I was, I think it was decent. Why Duke was decent… Talked about a meeting with a teacher there
[] Teacher Recommendation: APUSH Teacher: Hopefully good? She’s my XC coach as well. Math teacher, had him for Calc BC and Multivariable, it was pretty generic but decent I guess
[] Counselor Rec: ?? hopefully fine
[] Additional Rec:
[li] Interview: Went pretty well… He kept on talking about his “inside connection” with Duke admissions office… that went really well…[/li][/ul]

Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): IL
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: North Shore public competitive
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: too much for financial aid
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul] Dad’s a legacy
[/li]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades were okay, but not stellar
[] Weaknesses: bad freshman year grades
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: … I don’t really know… I guess just not strong enough overall
[] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted:[/ul] Accepted: UofI (business), Wisconsin- Madison (invitation to apply for direct BBA program), Case Western (Preprofessional Law interview), Northwestern. Waitlisted: Vanderbilt, Notre Dame.

General Comments: I knew this was coming? Duke defers so many people each year and rarely accepts any… (which I find to be extremely annoying… I would have rather just known I was rejected in December). But it’s okay, I’ve fallen more and more in love with Northwestern, so I will be a wildcat next year! (I thought it was a sign that I would go to NU over Duke, especially since the blue devils lost to the wildcats this year (even if it was Arizona’s wildcats)) Just sayin’

Oh also, just a note for applicants applying who has the same admissions officer as I do, HE IS REALLY REALLY BAD. I sent him multiple updates about why I wanted to go to Duke and new awards and activities I was involved in and he never responded to any of my emails, so watch out for that…

[ul]
[li] Strengths: Well-rounded. Decent test scores.[/li][] Weaknesses: Not stand out?
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Things happen for a reason.
[] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Waitlisted at Tulane, Cornell, Columbia. Rejected from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Brown, UPenn, Northwestern, Dartmouth.
[li] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies? After.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: Honestly, I didn’t think I was getting into college. After getting rejected from Northwestern and waitlisted from Tulane, I didn’t know what was real. Seeing rejection after rejection after rejection today, I thought I was going to take a gap year and not get into college at all. It’s so scary when you’ve worked all your life at carving out your person, working hard in school, taking on challenges outside of school, etc. to only be met by multiple rejections/waitlists. It’s so scary. 8 rejections. 3 waitlists. Who can take it? And the scary thing is that I had no idea what in the world I did wrong. I felt like a piece of crap. What did I not do that the people who got in did? Am I not good enough? But after I saw the word, “Congratulations,” total relief. I’M GOING TO COLLEGE.

[] Job/Work Experience: 7-week Research Internship (cancer cell research)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Hospital Volunteering (3 years); Church Volunteering (8 years, leader of activities); California Service Trip; Second Harvest Food Bank (1 year)
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): It was about bowling. It was pretty good, in my opinion.
[] General Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): About my dad. I honestly think this is what might have brought me down a little, seeing as how I didn’t get accepted at any CommonApp schools. I don’t think I wrote it very well at all.
[] Second Essay (subject - and personal opinions on it): Why Duke essay – I talked about Duke’s biology department and also talked about its commitment to athletics and academics. Standard academics/sports balance essay, I guess. I also submitted an essay on my research internship.
[] Teacher Recommendation (only if you saw it): Didn’t see them. Assuming one wasn’t great.
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): Didn’t see it. Assuming it was good.
[] Additional Rec (only if you saw it): Sent in a rec from the president of my church. It was pretty short, but pretty good.

[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, commitment to ECs, some SAT scores, volunteering
[] Weaknesses: Lack of many ECs, lack of leadership positions, AP scores, Teacher Recs and Common App Essay (don’t know for sure but assuming).
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t know. I think because of the weaknesses I listed. There were too many applicants this year, and I don’t think I was one of the better Asian males applying from California.
[] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Accepted at UC Davis/Berkeley/LA/San Diego and USC; Waitlisted at WashU, Vanderbilt, and Rice; Rejected at Columbia, Cornell and Harvard.
[li] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies? I don’t know, not really. It wouldn’t have made much of a difference.
[/li]

[/ul]**General Comments: I’m pretty disappointed about this, but I’ve pretty much gotten over it. As Guttentag said, many of us could have been admitted last year or the year before, but this year turned out to be too competitive. That, or I’m just not Duke quality. Either way, I’m just glad this whole process is over, and I’m looking forward to college next year. **

Decision: Accepted

[ul]
[] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Accepted: Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD (Regents), Davis. Waitlisted: Rice, Dartmouth, Duke. Rejected: Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Pomona College.
[] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies? No preference really. This is going to sound depressing, but it would be disappointing either way.

[/ul]General Comments: Admissions were brutal this year. Congrats to those accepted; to fellow waitlistees, I really hope everything works out for us, whether it is by our getting off the waitlist or by going to another wonderful school. To those rejected, you can’t take denial personally when the pool is so qualified, and I’m certain we will all end up where we belong.

Awesome essay. Killer recs.
Decent extra currics. Some leadership positions. Devotion to charity work.
My interview went pretty poorly. My interviewer had a stutter and it threw me way off for the whole interview. Also, he didn’t ask me any questions; he wanted me to ask him questions. Completely cought me off guard.
White female. No hooks.
Waitlisted at vandy and nd.
Off to the university of Texas.

[] Job/Work Experience: one summer coaching, one summer at an iPhone app company,
[] Volunteer/Community service: just what is required to graduate my school
[] Summer Activities: summer writing programs, jobs, travel
[] Essays: common app was about writing a novel, supplement was this really weird creative thing about being in the sky? I have no idea but it worked. Also submitted a creative writing supplement which may have fed in.
[] Teacher Recommendation: both should have been lovely
[] Counselor Rec: Also one of my teachers–he said it was wonderful.
[] Additional Rec:
[li] Interview: I talked to the lady about how ridiculous the school system is. She was really cool.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: unusual application & essays
[] Weaknesses: I don’t really do the average things in an attempt to get into college…lots of clubs, lots of community service, etc.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m guessing the essays and probably test scores/transcript.
[] What other schools have you been accepted to/plan on going? accepted at UChicago, wesleyan, tufts, brown, dartmouth, princeton. WL at harvard and rejected by yale.
[/ul]
General Comments: I’m debating between Brown and Princeton at the moment, but might think about Chicago as well…don’t think I want to go to NC so I think I’ll say no to Duke. Beautiful/amazing place though. I’m so gratified to have been accepted. I saw my Duke decision first because I tried to wait for all of them…and man was I happy! It sort of set me up to get into the ivies.

[li] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies?: I saw it after all my Ivies, and I’m glad. I was almost scared that this day would end with a slew of rejection letters; Duke saved my sanity. <33333
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: Duke wasn’t really a serious consideration for me at first, but with the financial aid package in the mix, I’m most likely coming here instead of staying in-state. Hope to see some of you guys at the Blue Devil day! To the waitlisted / rejected: no matter what, you ARE going to college, and Duke maybe just wasn’t the fit for you. I don’t think you’ll be thinking much about it once you are at college – wherever you go – and you’ll love the experience nevertheless of this one decision. Good luck!
P.S. So thankful that this admissions process is finally over.

[/ul]Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths:Class Rank (considering school is competitive and ranked nationally), Maybe EC’s, Sick Nasty courseload
[] Weaknesses:SAT for sure. I was always laughed at because my SAT score was lower than my birth year. Not until October of senior year did I break 2000… Also there was a definite downward trend in my grades after sophomore year bc of messy divorce(4.0 and ended with a 3.87 so you can kinda do the math)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:Well Rounded
[] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted:
[li] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies? I liked it just where it was. As I was losing hope after being rejected by Penn and Columbia, it was great to see some positive news. I left it for right before Cornell (bc Cornell was my first choice). I was so excited even though it was a school I never seriously considered. I called my mom and felt so good that I basically forgot about Cornell for a little. I ended up getting rejected at Cornell, but I am still thanking my lucky stars that I got into Duke.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: I had only been accepted to my safeties (University of FLorida and Georgia Tech) before today. I really didn’t apply to any match schools (was thinking about UMich). I had mostly reaches (Ivies Duke and CMU). I was relieved to be accepted at Duke. The bottom line is apply to a bunch of schools and have school that safeties, matches, and reaches. Also don’t let anyone give you S H I T about SAT scores because they obviously don’t mean everything. Hopefully going to Duke. Might go to Carnegie Mellon CIT if taken off the waitlist.
