Official FALL 2013 Cornell Transfers Thread

Just finished my interview in UR, it went pretty good but I’m still looking forward to Cornell ILR way more enthusiastically. I can see how busy they are since on Monday the rep already confirmed they received my college report but so far my application status hasn’t been updated at all.

Anyone have guaranteed transfer option? I just have to send midterm grades. I have all As if the professors include the curve they gave, but am concerned if they don’t. I met the requirements (cals bio) with a 3.85 before midterm. Suggestions anyone? I’m very nervous.

<-- Applying as an transfer student from a CC, international student, econ major.

@Danielle, yeah they are usually slow to update the system.

@Zachary, as far as I know for GT if you complete the require courses with a B or better then you are guaranteed to make it. You shouldn’t be too worried, unless the midterm report had Cs for required courses.

U guys should keep in mind that once you get into cornell, you can change your major anytime.

Hey guys,

I have just submitted the application and the payment - this process requires so much attention and time :slight_smile: . Is there any confirmation sent by Cornell immediately, aside from what common app emails?

Thanks.

I am, btw, AEM applicant. An international student from California Community College

High School GPA: 4.95/5
College GPA: 3.73 (totally messed up my first quarter here)
TOEFL: 107
SAT/ACT: I haven’t submitted them
Courses: No biology, but physics. I will take Public Speaking in Spring Quarter.
Essays: Solid

High School Extracurriculars: Pretty good with several international conferences and business related competitions.

College Extracurriculars: A company started recently, Business Club, President, Tutor in econ/stat/physics/phil and psychology. Also leader in Pass the Torch Program (helping students with academic english writing) and several others.

Is that possible to get into AEM with such a low GPA, applying as an international student from a community college ?

Any feedback appreciated. Thank you!

Hey Fogueira. I’m also an international student applying to AEM. Have you took all the requirement and recommended course besides Biology? One full year of biology is pretty much required, so it can be little tough to get in because they are very strict about the requirements and recommendations. Other than that, your stats looks very good. By the way, did you take ESL classes in your college? I started taking low ESL courses which won’t transfer, so I didn’t perform it well. Idk if I have to include low non-transferrable ESL courses when calculating my GPA. If I include it, it is 3.79 and 3.94 if I exclude it.

And also for all applicants, did you all send the mid year report?

Applied as a junior at Montgomery to CALS

College GPA: 3.71(65 credit, receiving my aa degree in may) member of PTK
HS: 2.6
SAT: 1280/2400
ECs: volunteer at a cultural center for three years…
essays were decent…but who knows ??

So stressful…

@Jk1018, thanks for your response. That’s funny that ESL classes are usually harder. Actually, I was placed in a ESL class right before the college-level writing, but did not do very well in it - only a B+ because of stupid things like writing “Computers cannot Teach Basic Skills” instead of “Computers Cannot Teach Basic Skills”…English classes are much better :)

For the courses, I have them mostly done, besides Public Speaking, as I have mentioned, but I will take it next quarter. I have had around 20 units every quarter, so I was unable to take the full biology sequence. But if consider Biopsychology and Physical Anthropology as Bio classes then they are in my coursework.
Have you taken everything that they have recommended? Seems you are very into it, so you should have a good chance!

@jay327, have you submitted your SAT scores? If it is really out of 2400, then probably it won’t be the best idea, even though your college GPA seems solid.

Just applied to ILR! Does anybody know if our applications are sent to review prior to the actual system being updated? Technically, all of my materials are in and I know they take forever updating that system; so it wouldn’t seem really fair that an applicant who has all of their materials in are simply not looked at in time based on the fact that the people in processing couldn’t document it fast enough…

@Fogueira, Yes. sent them with my application…I knew it was the bad idea to do so… But my counselor was telling me that hS records wouldn’t hurt my chance tremendously if i had a degree…So I don’t know, got my fingers acrossed…

Also, does anyone know when will they send out notices regarding interview?

Hey does anyone know how easy is it to transfer if you are already in Cornell from lets just say CALS to COE?

@SMRSMR
I’m not really sure about anything with the BSoc major unfortunately.

@lilmelonred
Transferring from school to school within CU is actually kind of difficult (at least to get in to CALS). I have a buddy who moved from COE into CALS communication, and it has taken him 1 and 1/2 semesters just to get it approved. Had nothing to do with GPA, but everything to do with the classes he still needed. However, I think its mostly because schools such as COE and A&S have different prereqs that people take as freshman, so if they try to transfer as a sophomore/rising junior, they end up being way behind in the CALS prereqs. I assume it’s like this when trying to go from CALS to other schools too. They basically want to make sure that you aren’t put way behind by transferring in. You just have to check what the requirements are for freshman at whatever school you’re looking to move into and stay on top of them.

Like, I’m going to major in Bioengineering at CALS… I might want to change it to COE for chemical engineering in sophomore year. So, where can I check to see the requirements of both of these schools for freshmen year?

Hum…just like Berkeley. They will approve your change in major if it doesn’t delay your graduation.

Hey guys! Well i’ve been lurking this thread for a while now… I also applied to UMICH, going to be recycling that post to list my stats here… :)

Its nothing close to the average “cc” member’s credential. We have some bright and very competitive applicants here. I have never done this before but heres my attempt!..

School of Choice: ILR! :D

Applied for a junior transfer… will have 61 credits and an associates degree.

Mixed in community service with business and public policy. I don’t think I wrote an outstanding impressive essay, I just talked about mainly what ILR can offer me and how my interest/E.Cs has led me to this path.

Transfer comm essay: Talked about having a second chance with community college, explained a little about how I fell off in high school due to family issues. (made sure not to talk too much about it and kept the focus on myself.) Explained my drive to receive a bachelors and eagerness to continue learning.

…

If I missed anything, please let me know.

But other than that… What do you guys think?

@lilmelonred

Search the CoE for the 2012 Engineering Handbook. This is what I found:

FIRST-YEAR REQUIREMENTS

By the end of the first year, engineering students are expected to have completed (or received credit for) the following core requirements:

MATH 1910 and MATH 1920;
Two of the following (depending on Major): CHEM 2090, CHEM 2080, PHYS 1112, 2213, 2214;
One of CS 1110, CS 1112, CS 1114, or CS 1115;
Two first-year writing seminars;
One intro-to-engineering course (ENGRI designation);
Two physical education courses and the university swim test.*

*The swim test isn’t required for transfer students

I just applied and I’m wondering what my chances are. Coming out of high school i didnt have good grades to apply to top 25 schools so i’m tryin my luck now. Also do you guys kno if transferring from a 4 year institution is better than going from a community college? I feel like I see more students from community colleges transferring and I wasn’t sure if there were any advantages to each side. btw here are my grades. Thanks guys this is really helpful
