I am applying for CAS, junior transfer, math major.

International student at a decent state university:

College/ Major Applying to: CAS
Entering as: junior
HS GPA: 95/100 (rank 5/86)
College GPA: 4.1/4.3 [average GPA is 2.5/4.3, specified by college policy] 58 units finished, 17 in progress
SAT: N/A
Extracurriculars: pretty mediocre, I work part-time around 10 hours/wk, volunteer, personal programming projects, winner of a CS contest organized by IBM, tutor, and couple of clubs.
hooks: I have a really rare generic leg disease, have gone through depression and one of my essay is about how I overcome the difficulties and stuff. I think my essays are great :)

I’m applying for a major in Biological Sciences, specifically Molecular and Genetic, in the CAS. Sorry, forgot to mention my major earlier. I finally have all of my application forms in, and my financial aid stuff is mostly put together. I just need my dad to file his taxes and then I should be ready to go. If anyone is running late with stuff, they told me that it can be a few days late AS LONG AS YOU HAVE YOUR APPLICATION AND SUPPLEMENT IN BY THE 1ST!!!

If you don’t have that then you’re probably out of luck, but both of those are online so it shouldn’t be too hard to put together. Hoping we all make it! Do they announce between April-May or May-June? I could swear I’ve heard both…I ask because my “back-up” school has accepted me, but I have to pay the admittance fee by May 1st. Hopefully I get word by from Cornell, for better or for worse, by that point.

just submitted mine…many thanks to SMRSMR for the feedback on essays. Looks like I’m the lone applicant on here for HumEc…no complaints from my end!

I have a Transfer Option from the University of Vermont for CALS Department of Communication, and I’m in the process of getting my Mid-Term report filled out since we have break off next week. I haven’t been this excited in months! Good luck everybody!!!

Okay so just dropped off my mid term report at the post office, right on time too. And luckily enough I ended up with a 4.0 as my mid term GPA, so I am REALLY REALLY hoping that helps my chances. Now I just wait!

If you guys want to have a little fun, you can check out the hottest new time-waste on campus…the Cornell University Confessions page on FB. The thing is spreading like wild fire up here…

@acs, good thing you’ve emailed them, they may possibly take all the materials with your name and send them to transfer processing. I don’t think it should be too much of a problem.

I will say this for all you CALS communications folks…I have HEARD that they’re going to be more selective this year. It might just be a rumor, but it was from a pretty reliable source of mine. Apparently there are a bunch more people transferring into comm from other schools at CU (I know a lot of engineering and PAM kids who switched over), so the available slots are filling up faster. But again, it could just be a rumor.
I’m not saying this to be negative, just spreading what I’ve heard. (Unrelated, but the comm PhD only accepted 3 students this year after having a cohort of 14 two or three years ago…it’s just getting tougher all the way around)

@mn62980, Do you know how competitive Biology and Society for CALS is as a major? I know biological sciences is very competitive for obvious reasons, but don’t know much about BSoc.

I applied to ILR with 3.68 GPA at one of Top 3 public universities, and all As in midterm report.
Will my gpa hurt my chance?

Transfer as Junior
HS GPA: 4.0 at a rigorous prep boarding school
SAT = 2170
SAT II MATH 2C= 800
SAT II CHEMISTRY= 770
SAT II US HISTORY = 710
AP CHEM = 4
AP US HISTORY =4
HS EC : strong but no “hook”

College EC: internships and lots of volunteer activities, leadership but nothing really stellar.
Letters of Rec: 1 from english professor and 1 from high school counselor who knows me very well
Essay: very strong

How competitive is it to get into ILR as junior transfer?

@collegedyp, I think you’re a competitive applicant; obviously the higher the GPA the better, but your GPA won’t put you out of the running by any means. Your GPA is good/close enough to 3.7, and the midterm report should help. Your HS numbers are great as well.

@Johngranados, I don’t think that would be a problem at all. However I don’t think you’re supposed to see the recommendation letters if you waived your right on the instructor evaluation.

Ok so I am finally submitting my stuff yeaa at least I didnt completely miss the deadline!

My Stats
Freshman at my State School so Sophmore transfer
HS GPA- 3.58-3.6ish cant rlly remember
College GPA- 3.57 first semester
College I’m applying to: CALS
Major: Animal Science (at least thats different)

Activities- Apprentice officer in Sheep management group, Donkey management group, Intern at a local farm to feed calves, Ballroom Dance team member, Volunteer Engineering camp counselor, Bellydance team member, Pre-vet Society member, and lots of senior year activities

Recs- have three from professors as well as Co director from the Engineering camp I volunteered at

Essays- mostly focused on my desire to work with exotic animals like birds of prey because I’m really interested in Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology and Raptor program

yeaa thats about it for me. My gpa is really nothing special so hopefully I made my essays creative enough. Maybe being hispanic and a first generation college student would help?.. not holding my breath though lol

@Spacecommander, I wouldn’t say that. CC is a very small pool of the applicants and this year’s thread was started much later than last years. I am sure more people will drop by sooner to the admissions decisions.

@Noctis, though your GPAs may be on the low side of average, your demonstrated interest in Animal science is superb, and I hope you really utilized it in your essays! Plus your hooks will definitely help. You have a good shot.
