Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT score? extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses:Interview.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:interview
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul] nothing. I did what I do and if they don’t want me I don’t want them. I won’t bend over for any school that’s stupid.
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I mean, I really don’t want to go there now from my interviewer’s attitude/admissions decisions they just seem insecure and stuck up… I’d go to my safety over this school at least michigan or nyu will want me. So bottom line gtown sucks.

I’m applying to gtown regular decision and these posts are really scaring me. How is it that some of the best students weren’t accepting while some of the worst were? (no offense to anyone but seriously!) I think someone with an 800 on all the subject tests was deferred while someone with a 590 subject test was accepted! Are the essays really THAT important?!

Decision: Deferred
Applying to: SFS

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Science Olympiad (captain 12), Mu Alpha Theta (secretary 11), Lighting and Sound (head of lighting 12), CSF, NHS, school service program, ice skated from 3rd to 10th grade
[] Job/Work Experience: none paid, but volunteer teacher for after school tutoring program 2 days a week for 6 weeks each semester
[] Volunteer/Community service: various community service through my ec’s, nothing extremely special
[] Summer: summer after 10th grade, went for 3 week engineering course at Columbia; summer after 11th grade, 7 weeks at Harvard, got A’s in Calc 1 and Web Design courses[/ul]

Writing:[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Activity Short Essay: about Lighting and Sound, pretty good[/li][] Essay 1 (Personal/Community essay): going to nyc for columbia summer program and how it opened my eyes to cultural opportunities and pretty much changed my life, really good
[] Essay 2 (Different for each school): why georgetown essay, very detailed talking about jesuit tradition, 3+2 engineering program with columbia, study abroad opportunities[/ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation #1: english teacher who retired last year and gave me the best AP Lang student award out of ~200 kids. she really loved me and her letter was so detailed and specific, i was completely shocked and starting crying after i read it because it made me so proud of myself. needless to say, i think this is why i’m getting into college [/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: math teacher i’ve had for 3 years who’s also the lighting and sound and mu alpha theta advisor. i know him on a personal level as well and i think he was able to include some info about my family situation in the letter which probably helped!
[] Counselor Rec: don’t know her very well at all, but she seemed to like me a lot after i got the national merit semifinalist award (coincidence i think not), probably a generic letter since she advises ~500 students
[] Interview: AWFUL! the guy was an absolute jerk. no matter how engaged and positive i was when he asked me a question, he always found a way to make me feel inadequate. he was so rude, it’s a long story. i tried so hard and was very polite, so maybe it was a test or something…
Other[ul]
[] Which school did you apply to?: College of Arts and Sciences
[] What did you choose as your major: Math! (i think this was a hook)

[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: did not apply for financial aid
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): absolutely none :/[/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades! I never got an A-, only A’s and A+'s which i think made an impression about my work ethic. also SAT’s, AP’s.
[] Weaknesses: SAT Physics, I had to self study for the electricity and magnetism portion two days before the test  also my ec’s weren’t very involved; mean interviewer
[] Why you think you were accepted: white girl as math major, really good recs, specific why georgetown essay
[] What would you have done differently?: participated more in school, I really wanted to do yearbook or newspaper but kinda went down the nerdy math/science student route. but i’m not complaining cus i most definitely plan to get really involved in college![/ul]Other Factors:
**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:**I was so ecstatic that I got in! It came as a complete surprise especially after my awful interview. My acceptance proved to me that you don’t have to be a super genius or cure cancer to get into college. My ec’s were weak, but i worked my butt off to get perfect grades and scores and it definitely showed! Congrats to everyone else accepted  I’m waiting for 4 ivy league decisions before I commit, but since Georgetown has an engineering school program with Columbia, I’m thinking this is my best shot at ivy!

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Overall I thought I was a strong candidate, except for one area… (see below)
[] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Uh see above? Not having enough (current/reported) leadership positions was probably a factor. I was also virtually uninvolved during my freshman year.
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
I definitely would have gotten involved earlier in high school. I was pretty shy at the beginning of freshman year, and it came as somewhat of a surprise that I wouldn’t be going to the public high school in my district (where, of course, all of my friends from junior high school went!). Since I did NOT want to go to my current school, I didn’t really put in effort regarding making new friends and wasn’t all that intersted in being “involved” at first. I’m much more outgoing and involved now. Perhaps I could have explained this lack of ECs in one of my essays, but it’s water under the bridge.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Georgetown is definitely my first-choice school. Even though it was only a deferral and not a rejection, it was still painful to hear. Luckily, though, I got over it pretty quickly, and I think I have a good shot in the RD round. Congrats to everyone who got in - hopefully you know how lucky you are!
