Reflection
Strengths: You judge.
Weaknesses: I didn’t really try on my application. Test scores aren’t exceptional at all and I didn’t get my SAT II’s in on time.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I should have put more time into my essays (I found a few minor typos in them). Also, my EC’s are relatively weak
What would you have done differently?: Generally put more time into application.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
I am not disappointed at all considering the time I put into it haha. In fact, I am taking this in pretty good stride. After submitting my application, my heart was set for another school, and although I would still like to be admitted regular round, I’m perfectly fine the way it is.

Congratulations to those that got in. As of now, I am the 85% :p

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2050 Don’t remember breakdown… I’m from MS, and we focus primarily on ACT. I do remember writing was the lowest though, and GU doesn’t consider that.
SAT I superscore (breakdown): Same.
ACT (highest composite w/breakdown): 33 (E 34, M 32, R 31, SR 35)
ACT (Highest subsection from each test): Previously, I made a 34 on Reading
SAT II: USH 730, Lit 710, Math II 660 (lol at the 660… shouldn’t have taken that the same week as the AP Calc test)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.92
Weighted GPA: we don’t weight
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 5% (I think 18 or 19…? big school)
AP (place score in parentheses): AP Language and Comp (5), AP USH (4) AP World History (4) AP Calculus AB (2, didn’t report), AP Chemistry, AP US Government, AP Macroeconomics (no tests on those)
IB (place score in parentheses): Not offered
Senior Year Course Load: I drive 2 hours a day to Ole Miss to take Intensive Chinese III, Macroeconomics, and Business Calculus because I exhausted the course offerings at my high school. At high school, I take AP Macro (they insisted on making me take more than one class, even though I never make it back to school in time to attend AP Macro) and English IV on block (I’m graduating this semester!!)
Number of other EA applicants in your school: 0
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMSF, AP Scholar

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Captain of the Debate Team, State Champion in Public Forum Debate my first year competing (junior year,) MS representative to national debate tournaments, National Honor Society, Madrigals 10th-12th (select choral group of 20 members out of a 400 member choral department,) Varsity Choir 9th-12th, Soundwave Show Choir 10th-11th, soloist for competition.
Job/Work Experience: This year, I’ve been the technology and office manager for our local state senator. Due to a special election, she ran in Jan. and Nov., so I worked both campaigns pretty heavily. Also, spring semester last year, I was a nanny every day to a sweet little 1 year old. It was about 10 hours a week.
Volunteer/Community service:

I’ve done a lot of work with my church. We have a youth choir that goes on a mission trip every year and sings for old people around the nation in retirement homes. Also, I do a lot of pro bono ACT and math tutoring at my school.

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):

Essays (Include Subjects):
Activity Short Essay: 9 About me going to an Intensive Chinese program this summer. Short, to the point, and reflective
Essay 1 (Personal/Community essay): 8. Also my NMSF essay. Good topic It was about my 1st year at Ole Miss’s Summer College, and how my roommate was from Mexico. I wrote about how that inspired me to look at the international angle of economics. However, there were comma splices EVERYWHERE when I looked at it last night.
Essay 2 (Different for each school): 9. SFS. I wrote about how the modern world as a whole was addicted to greed and debt. It had some clever analogies and was very reflective and representative of my goals, etc.
Other:
Teacher Recommendation #1: 7. AP Lang teacher. It was strong, but formulaic. She has a lot of kids ask her for recs, so she tends to use the same format.
Teacher Recommendation #2: n/a
Counselor Rec: Didn’t see, considering this and some other results, I’m assuming it was a 10. Hahaha.
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I actually applied last year EA (ended up getting waitlisted RD) because of the whole exhausting my high school’s course selection thing. I had the same interviewer. She told me I was the most qualified candidate she’d ever met and that she would write me the best recommendation possible. Considering our 2010 and 2011 valedictorians are currently at Georgetown, this meant a lot to me

Ethnicity: W
Gender: F
Income Bracket: $40-50K (single mom who is a school teacher)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I applied last year and currently drive 2 hours to school every day.

Reflection

Strengths: My letter I wrote to them basically begging them to save me from this hell known as Mississippi and accept me, My ACT, ECs, premise of my essays, and interview.
Weaknesses: SAT IIS, and comma splices ALL OVER that essay.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Because this is their 3rd time reading my application (yes, I did use the same essays this year) and they probably felt sorry for me… Hahaha. Plus, I really do work extremely hard.
What would you have done differently?: PROOFREAD MY ESSAY

Writing:

Short Essay: Model UN Experiences (I think it was over 500 words. That probably was not a good idea…)
Essay 1: Personal essay; maybe a little too trite, meh (800+ words -_-)
Essay 2: Libyan Crisis (I should have picked a less common global issue)
Teacher Recommendation 1: Didn’t Read
Teacher Recommendation 2: Didn’t Read
Counselor Recommendation: Didn’t Read
Interview: I thought it was fine. It lasted ~45 minutes.

Other:

Which school did you apply to?: SFS
Which Major did you choose?: International Political Economy
Date Submitted App: Early October? My transcript didn’t get sent until a few days before 11/1, though.
State: NJ
School Type: Fairly Competitive Public. It was ranked in the Top 500 US schools a few years ago, but I’m not sure if it still is.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: > $200K
Hooks: None

Reflection:

Strengths: I don’t really know. A 1490 is not exactly off-the-charts at Georgetown, and most other applicants also have Model UN experience.
Weaknesses: ECs, nothing that unique about me, LONG essays
Why I was deferred: Honestly, there was nothing about me that just stood out. Yeah, I have been relatively successful academically, but it’s not remarkable. I was kind of hoping that my leadership position in Model UN would help, but my ECs are just unimpressive overall. Oh, and my 500+ word “short” essay couldn’t have helped, nor did the essay with 800 words.

Decision: Deferred

I can’t really rate how good my essays were, but I worked really hard on them.

◦Essay 1 (Personal/Community essay): The time my mom got arrested…my English teacher was pretty fond of it, but it’s impossible to tell what the admissions people though of it.
◦Essay 2 (Different for each school): Interest in Econ and connected it with Georgetown, social justice activities at Georgetown I would definitely join if accepted…I thought it was pretty good.
◦Other:
•Teacher Recommendation #1: cant read because of school policy, but I assume it was good.
•Teacher Recommendation #2: Jesus I hope this second recommendation was optional…
•Counselor Rec: This should have been great, but once again I am unable to read the letters.
•Additional Rec:
•Interview: A bit awkward, certainly didn’t help, but I don’t think enough to hurt.
