Yeah it is but how many people that apply have various IMO medals and equivalent?

Not that many. What is your point? The IMO medalists are like .001% of all applicants......

would around 1200 hours of community service (much of which includes high leadership) from freshman year through the present be considered a hook?

I'm curious how many IMO medalists there are applying!

0.001% of applicants at harvard have it you say ... mmm ... so 0.00001*20000 = 0.2 applicants. So 0.2 applicants have it???

lol. just joking

What about being on USA Today's All Academic First team...?

Or being the team captain of the National championship Science Bowl/Science Olympiad teams?

Siemens-Westinghouse, STS National Finalist/Champ, or professional research?

AP State Scholar or super high national scholar w/ 20+ tests (some self-study), all 5?

International Science/Math Competitions (IMO, IPO, IBO, etc) medal winner?

SAT 2400, SATII, all 800?

I imagine that if people have stats this good, then they'll probably get in.:-O

Isn't the USA Today team announced after college accpetances?

captain of national cahmpionsihip.... I don't know if that is a hook.

The research mentioned is definitely a hook.

AP State scholar i thihnk would be a hook or the 20+ 5s people

International Math/Sci competitions....definitely.....

SAT 2400 SATII 800.....I don't reall don't think this can be considered a hook.......

ANother hook would be RSI I guess....

How on earth did you manage to take 20 AP's?

i don't think brady00n did, he/she just asked if it was a hook.

ALso, I think many people could have taken APs beginning in 9th grade and just consistenly took APs and self-studied for some.

Is WTP/MITES a hook?

"ALso, I think many people could have taken APs beginning in 9th grade and just consistenly took APs and self-studied for some."

I'm jealous....My school is really emphatic about taking prequisities so there was no way for me to take any APs freshman year, even if I did summer school. :(

Goldfish....it really doesn't matter that much.

when did you guys get notified of AP State Scholar? How are WTP, MITEs, and the program at FSU?

First off, I am not an AP state scholar and I don't think brady00n is either. I think he/she was just asking.

I don't know about when people are notified.

Sorry to jump back to the topic, but would at one point providing 1/2 ($200/wk) the income for my family during the school year, a year after not living with my family for months because my mom was in a women's shelter count as a hook? And being from the south? And is Tennessee generally considered to be an "underrepresented" state?

IMO turns out not to be such a hook(for internationals, at least)

The thing is, that it DOES require a lot of hard work(as stated here already), and ppl usually tend to work on that only and have no (or hardly any) ECs and very low sat1 scores(cr and writing of course, lol:)).I'm saying this cause there's been a lot of IMOs applying from my school in the previous years and a fair number of them was rejected not by H only, but from all the ivies.I know of, say, 7 cases. Sad, but true.

if one is to use it then one should do so quietly, bc admissions adapts with submissions. otherwise all of u will play the same card and the homegrown Iowa boy who never volunteered will get in ;)

good luck to y'all and make www.nattybumba.com your home page. it changes every 2 weeks. has the important stuff. started by harv boys!

I live in Kentucky, granted its louisville, but its not great (My school even has a special tunnel for druggies to go to). My school doesn't care about academics a lot. When I won the regional fair (without any help from me teacher- he didn't even know about it) and was eligible to compete at the Intel International Science fair, he discouraged me from going to Arizona because I would miss a week of school (we were studing how to balance equations- I taught that to myself in 7th grade).
One thing my school does have is an IB program with only 6 kids that do full IB. I'm in IB, but even then I don't think I'm being challenged. The biology class is taught by the same teacher who didn't want to compete at Intel, and our lab equip. is crap. I want to go to an Ivy so that I can be with students who actually want to learn and conduct research experiements like me. I want profesors who are excited about what they teach, instead of just handing out worksheets all day.
Would coming from a bad school and becoming an Intel finalist inspite of it be a hook?

Being an intel finalist in itself is a very strong hook. Good job.

Anyway, my only hook is playing in a proffessional orchestra, although I don't even know if that is a hook. Anyone know if this will help me at all?

Research...

I can't figure out if low socio-economic status is good or bad-- I come from a single parent household getting by on $19,500 a year. Should I hide this or make it obvious?
