Ummm I think its kind of rude for you to list things like "Native American" and "Kentucky resident" as part of your imaginary best hook...because there are Native Americans and Kentucky residents apply and attending and its like you are making it seem like they are imaginary too, IMO.

"I'm in good terms with George Bush's daughter" lol, I love it:)

Yeah........:( you're right. Sorry to any native american and/kentucky resident.......:(. Man I feel bad now:(. Man EAS is hunting me down.....the next....BYERLY...DUN DUN DUN!!!!!!!

apfreak- I'm not wanting you to feel bad, I just am asking you to consider that when you...or others...post things like "the ideal candidate" and include things that applicants/students may in fact be it is alienating to these people by including them as part of an imaginary perfect application. Also its implying that Native Americans/Kentucky residents/etc can't actually apply, don't get good scores, do not exist, etc.

back to the hooks, I am African-American female with high GPA and SAT scores and an interest in science. Is that a hook?

What about a Puerto Rican for Pre-Med and later goals to be an Anesthesiologist? Is being Puerto Rican a bigger hook than most URMs because in A is for Admissions it says so. Is this true? WHY? I know MUCH less Puerto Ricans apply to Harvard than Mexican Americans so I am guessing that in EA there will be probably less than 100 Puerto Rican applicants...who knows but DOES ANYONE know about the A is for admissions claim? Anybody?

Apfreak- do you think the book means Puerto Ricans from the island? Does it matter? DOES ANYONE KNOW?

Hey Im from Pakistan, Does anyone know anything about the gap year? i took a year off? how could i justify that. And one other thing > how to ace the SAT vocabulary

umairak-Harvard really encourages kids to take a gap year, so I wouldn't worry about it. Doing something productive/exploratory with your gap year would probably benefit you.

Just forget me,
REally, but like wat? what can I Do in this Gap year, apart from taking SAT ofcourse? would joining an NGO be beneficial

How big of a hook is being recruited for football? In addition to, oldest of 7, lower income, and neither parent graduating from college?

All I have for hooks is that we have 12 kids, one doing service in a foriegn country, low family income and 4 of those 12 kids were adopted from overseas where when: A. We couldn't afford them and B. They had no chance for anything while in the orphanage.

Do those really count as hooks though?

what about my grandfather being a former secretary of foreign affairs and secretary of education of Pakistan? he also was an advisor to the founder of the country and he was almost assassinated during the country's civil war. how could i incorporate this into my app? maybe a letter of rec from him? or am i shamelessly name-dropping?

oh yeah how about this one...i met bill clinton in france and i was drunk..lol (true story by the way)

"oh yeah how about this one...i met bill clinton in france and i was drunk..lol (true story by the way)"

Liberal people in France??? No way!

hey ppl wat is the social work Harvard is looking for? what do they want students to have done in their extra cirriculars?

it seems like everyone is asking questions and no one is answering them.

deadhead06 - I think you should definantly incorporate that somehow, it's part of your familys struggles.

As for how. I don't know if Harvard would feel the same, but on the online Princeton application the optional reference can be from a family member, so I would just slip an extra recomendation letter in there. If all else, seriously, call teh admissions office and ask - maybe not all the details, but enough to ask your question.

one of my sons is at Yale without any hooks and the other is a freshman at Harvard, also without any hooks. I think hooks are overrated. What counts, in my opinion, is interesting and appealing essays and excellent letters of recommendation. Grades, test scores and extracurriculars are a given, but it is the intagibles that stick in the minds of the adcom members. Spend time on your essays and help your teachers to write you the kind of letter that you need and deserve.
