OFFICIAL Harvard HOOK site!!!

I don't think women in biology is that much of a hook anymore due to the large numbers of females majoring in that concentration, but what about women in, say, physics/math/chemistry? Are they still hooks?

I'm also a girl who wants to major in mathematics.

me too. did u guys write about that in any part of your app?

for intended major, i put mathematics on the supplement page.

i mean, did u write an essay abt it, or discuss it at length? because i don't mention it anywhere...

No, i sort of discussed it briefly in my essay, but not really. However, i got a letter of rec from my calc bc teacher. And she pretty much said that i was the most brilliant math student she'd ever had. So i hope that helps.

yeah, i also got a rec from my math teacher. don't know what he wrote though.... hope it was good. :)

Good luck with getting in. :)

thanx, u 2. so, u gonna bring ur porche 2 harvard if u get in? :P

i'm not sure. my parents think i'll have a better freshman year if i don't have a car. I'll be less distracted, so forth. So i don't know. But we'll see.

I wish I had a car...

me too... ...

hey guys, I just registered because I had a few questions about hooks...
I am the daughter of two South American immigrants neither of which went to college. I also live in a small town in Vermont. My recommendations are great and my grades are pretty good I'm in the top 10% of my class. I'm a varsity athlete, I've also had lead roles in most of the plays that I've done as well as a lot of community theatre, I spent my summer in Nicaragua shooting a documentary about the children of a small town that I was building a library for and I'm planning to send the film as a supplement. Other than that I have a lot of community service stuff and am the president of several clubs but my SATs I think are going to bring me down and I am applying for financial aid.
Any advice would be welcome!

I would suggest reaising ur grades and studying for the SATs your ECs are very solid and that tape is an amazing hook but the grades might be your one weakness.

dng, as long as your SATs are considerably higher than others in your area, I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure your best aspects stand out and overlap your 'bad' SAT scores.

it's funny...109 people got a 2400 that first time...anyway that's irrelevant...at our school there's a 2400, perfect GPA, most rigorous courseload (12 APs by grad) who got deferred...makes the rest of us feel good with our 2200s and our ECs. wahoo for appreciation of the well-rounded.

I've taken the SATs twice and was unhappy with both scores,
should I take them again or does that look bad?

Yeah three times is ok, don't worry.

do you guys know what a hook is? a hook is not 3 million hours of volunteer work, or starting up your own company, or being a co-author of a published paper. those are YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS.

a hook is a unique factor that distinguishes you from other applicants that can't be voluntarily done by you (for the most part). income, URM, legacy are all hooks, but being a valedictorian and getting perfect SATs and SAT2s are not hooks.

Is RSI a hook?
