no. but it is an achievement.

at least in the original sense of the word "hook" but way too many people from RSI apply to harvard/mit so in a sense, it "derides" the value of RSI

RSI is a hook...

not that many people achieve 2400 SATIs, 6 800 SAT2s, 17 5-APs, 36 ACTs, etc.

so would being a perfect academic robot be a hook?

(i think think that RSI is just an achievement, albeit a large one. i just think that people who get into RSI usually get accepted into ivies not solely because he/she went to RSI, but rather because RSI is looking for the same qualities that colleges look for, a.k.a. grades, personality, essays, and recs)

or as my friend puts it:

RSI<----good stats---->good college

not RSI--->good college

You guys had better watch out throwing all these hooks around. Someone might get an eye poked out!

i didnt apply to harvard...but i did apply to Stanford

does skateboarding count as a hook if i have related volunteer work/jobs/awards and i used a pic http://photobucket.com/albums/d67/meisner88/?action=view¤t=Skaters011.jpg&slideshow=paused&interval=3 of myself skating for one of the essays...i just thought it was something unique...how many 4.0/2400 (in one sitting) skaters are out there? pm me if you are one tho

play a sport and play it well. get into a club or travel organization. i got recruited and i got in.

Recruited athletes have no place in an academic institution.

recruited athletes with 4.3 gpa's do.

recruited athletes who get into schools like harvard work twice as hard as everyone else. they get the same grades as those who get in purely on academics, and have mastered something else in the process.

don't be so ignorant.

"don't be so ignorant" haha. sounds like a South Park episode featuring Michael Jackson.... oh yeah! That's because it is!!!!!!! Ease up guys!

what about a sorta-minority status?

i doubt there are many females majoring in pure math.. (kinda like balancing out the departments stats)

(and i'm pretty good at math - top 3 females in canada?)

i doubt "female math major" is a hook. and plus silver and bronze in the IMO representing canada got deferred from Harvard this year.

quote

I dont think so, coz someone from my school got in and he didnt have any SATs at that time, and his Math grades where in the B+/A category and is quite normal!!! He applied to HSM because when he was there he heard that RSI is your ticket to those schools. Waiting for Apr. 1st!!!

IHS: Read more carefully. "RSI is looking for the same qualities that colleges look for, a.k.a. grades, personality, essays, and recs." Not just grades, and that's all you gave us.

Is being from the Middle East a hook? The stereotype is after all a gas-station owner or taxi-cab driver.

thanks guitar.

truthsmoker--

i doubt it. there are a lot of middle easterners living in the usa. unless you are a part of a poor first-generation middle eastern family that immigrated to the usa when you were 14.

in that case, income would be the "hook"

not the ethnicity

There aren't that many middle easterners living in the USA. There were 2 million last I checked.

Yeah, 2 million is a lot. 2 million people can't all have the same hook ;)

These arn't REALLY hooks, but I am a QuestScholars Semi-finalist, QuestBridge finalist, Senior Class President, FFA Chapter President, Varsity football Co-Captain, attend a rural public school in Montana (my class has 14 students), and low income (I know it dosn't officially matter, but I get emails from harvard and their financial aid initiative). My only REAL hook is being a direct decendent of Henry Dunster, Harvard's first president. But are they really going to care about that, because that was back in the 1600s? It doesn't exactly make me a legacy.
