wow...only 15% of admits dont have some sort of leg up in the admissions process...im boned.

Would being a skilled kayaker be a hook? I'm not quite sure what defines a hook.

I'm not sure anybody really does

All we know is that a hook typically is curvicular with a sharp pointy edge. See pictures here:

and here:

does being a moody, violent and sadly demented teenager a hook?

Definitely. But only if you apply to be a guinea pig for the Psy dept:D No offense meant;)

why is coming from FL seen as a small hook? they have some of the best schools in the country. I can understand states like north/south dakota, nebraska, minnesota and stuff. What about deep South states like Georgia (not Atlanta) or Alabama?

Whatever you do don't nail it into your head that you have a hook/ chances are somebody else in the pool has your hook or one v.similar to yours. Too many people get heartbroken when they hold onto a belief that they have a hook. Instead make the best application you can and keep your fingers crossed.

"why is coming from FL seen as a small hook?"

Being from Florida might actually HURT an applicant in some years. Many people from that state apply to Ivies. The only hooked states are the places such as South Dakota and Wyoming. Even Minnesota has plenty of applicants each year. Georgia has a lot who apply, as well. Alabama may be a small tip-factor... I do know that one year only one person from Mississippi applied.

I saw in a documentary recently that a poor small town in Michigan, named Flint, actually has streets named after all the Ivy League schools. I wonder if coming from there would be a hook...

A lot of towns do that. I lived on Harvard St. this summer, in Tulsa, OK. There was also Yale St too.

Why do towns do that, I wonder?

Hummm... I grew up a war refuge... im sure thats a hook, but i felt bad prostituting that in my app so i didnt go indepth about it...i kinda mentioned it... apart from that ive lived in a couple of places... due to my previous situation... i have bad SATs (1380)... speak german spanish english.. thats it though...i f harvard doesnt want me... who cares... they know what they are looking for itll be for my good!

hey how do you know who applies from where.. im appling from central america, but im a US citizen... how can i find my pool?

you grew up in a war refuge? interesting. kinda.

well, having lived in a couple of places isn't really a hook...unless you're referring to five countries. i've moved more than 15 times in my life. that includes 9 cities.

no i mean countries... i moved around latinamerica... it actually wasnt a war refuge. But im from a central american country... and there was a civil war here pack in the 80s, my dad had to flee for political reasons... hence my family was "displaced" until the peace accords were signed... then yeah well long story sure you dont want to hear it all

"Refugee" indicates a person. "Refuge" indicates a location. I hope you didn't mislead Harvard admissions officers.

I don't think coming from a certain state helps at all. I was talking with the Yale alumni chair from our area of Kentucky, which should have a state hook being that people don't wear shoes, but it really doesn't. The acceptance rate is still 10%. Maybe it helps in the sense that the applicants aren't as qualified...but doubtful
I know its Yale, but i doubt that Harvard is diff.

Btw, what a female in physical sciences lk engineering or physics? I think it would help. what do you guys thnk?

Definitely. Just look at the admittance rates at MIT. I'm sure this translates similarly into other schools with engineering programs.
