Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

Last year, the threat started around now so I thought it wouldn't hurt to get started...

Add your comments/tips/advice below!

Summer plans? Where else are you considering applying?

Best of luck!

I’m applying! (Well if I can get my testing done) I’m basically spending my summer volunteering since there’s not much else for me to do

I’m thinking of also applying to my state safety, Northwestern, Duke and Tufts!

How about you?

I have a volunteering gig at the hospital and just got a job at Starbucks, haha.

I’m a bit anxious about testing too, actually. I would have to take my SAT IIs in November. I know they’re supposed to be optional now, but I still feel like I should try to get them in… and testing in November is kind of late for EA, isn’t it?

I’m still trying to figure out where else I’m applying. My Mom loves Canada, so she’s pressuring me to apply to McGill and Toronto. I think I’d like to try UChicago as well, but I need to put a bit more thought into where else I’m applying this summer, I think.

(Bump!)

Also, if anyone else has the Dr. Chung’s SAT Math book… would you like to start a small CC study group for the SAT Math? I’m getting mine this week and since I’m self-studying, I’d like to have a study buddy or two for encouragement (and help on any questions I may get stuck on). Message me if interested!

Wow, it feels weird being a part of this thread! I’ve been looking forward to applying for a long time, but I still can’t believe the time is finally upon us! Hey everyone! :D

I’m doing an internship with my main extracurricular, and also taking the time to really pursue a few of my personal hobbies, which really took a hit during junior year. God, summer break is glorious!

Thinking of applying to Yale, UChicago, and Brown, still working on safeties!

@WooTheDay‌ I also need to take SAT IIs either October or November, and I might also retake the SAT (it’s not absolutely necessary, but my math score is a little low). So I feel your pain. Yay, another UChicago applicant!

I can’t wait to get to know my fellow applicants here! What’s your main focus/interest? Mine’s currently arts administration (my main ECs revolve around arts/music administration), but I plan to go more into English in college.

I figured I’d drop a post too. Hi, I’m applying to Harvard SCEA this year too.
I’m an international student, btw, so there’s no summer break for me- my final school year is still going, and only ends in December.

Another international SCEA applicant here. Crazy to think that the application has to be sent in just over three months! I’ll mostly be chilling with friends this summer, but I am also attending a summer school starting in a few days, and I’ll probably have an internship in the aviation industry(wherein my main ec interests also lie) right before school starts.

*Mid-year & already nerve racking 8-X.
My main interest is CS, & it wouldn’t hurt to be accepted at either HYPS…
Godspeed 2all, ad infinitum.

@Bemusedfyz‌ @steinway‌ If you guys don’t mind me asking, where are both of you from?
It looks like we have an intriguing mix of ECs, geographic locations, and interests already!

@calliemoon11 I am currently living in an Eastern European country, where I was born, but I’m also from a Scandinavian country, being a halfie and having lived over there as well. How about you?:)

@calliemoon11 I’m from South Africa. Harvard took five people from my country last year, so… Here’s hoping ;)

@steinway‌ @Bemusedfyz‌ Wow, that’s awesome! Best of luck to both of you! I’m from in the country, in sunny California.

@steinway‌ The aviation industry? That’s epic. Are you into flying, or are you more on the administrative or design side?

@calliemoon11 Maybe I should have figured that out by your user name… Till now, flying and writing, as I am working on my pilot’s license, just for those smaller planes though, and writing for an online aviation mag. Hopefully, the dates will work out so that I can intern with the management of an airline towards the end of summer. So I basically have enough aviation in my life haha.

@steinway‌ Wow, that sounds amazing. I’m also starting flying lessons this summer, actually! I’m a bit scared, but excited. You seem like an awesome person.

What safeties/targets are you guys thinking of applying to?

@bioninja‌ I spoke to my school college counselor about safeties, and it looks like my current safeties are University of Southern California and NYU. I’m deeply invested in the arts, so NYU would be a good choice in that respect, but NY is way too loud and crowded for my introverted self. USC would be a good in-state choice, and I’d be able to continue my work with LA Opera (my main EC), but I would like to experience a new place and to go outside my immediate community (each year, many students at my school matriculate at USC). However, I do like that USC is slightly more selective. How about you?

@calliemoon11‌ That sounds super, good luck! I’ve seen videos of some breathtaking Cessna/Cirrus flying in Cali landscape-wise, and I’ve noted it down on my to-do list if I end up studying in the US… @bioninja I’m applying quite broadly; to unis in the UK(Probably Oxford PPE and History/History+Econ and LSE Economic History or Social Policy), France(SciencesPo), Spain(Pompeu Fabra and ESADE), US(though just a couple) and Italy(Bocconi), that are all varying in selectivity, so that I at the end of the process can pick the best available option.
