Official Harvard Waitlist Class of 2018

I was just released!

I was sent the rejection email at 11:38 AM. Closing down communications at this time.

Do you think all rejections were sent out or are they still keeping some candidates to give offers to later on?

I’m not sure…we are still on the wait list but i am going crazy…i will be thrilled with either acceptance or z list!

It will depend on the decisions of those students already asked. From the time that they are initially notified to the time that they must answer, they have roughly a week. If a student accepts, that’s one more spot that won’t be offered to someone else. If the student declines, then the admissions committee will ultimately call and offer the position to someone else. I believe that they have made their second round of calls and are, for the most part, awaiting answers.

Thus, the question is, if there were 20 spots to fill, and they called 20 students initially, how many of those students accepted, and how many declined. The number that declined is the number of calls they made next. And so on. Obviously, as time goes on, the number of calls declines with each iteration, and they need fewer students to remain on the waitlist.

I don’t really have any firm ideas about how they do the z-list.

I’m not sure…we are still on the wait list but i am going crazy…i will be thrilled with either acceptance or z list!

i don’t understand how everyone is being so patient…not that there is any choice but i hope they let us know wait list or z list this week or next…going nuts

@smartkids2 you are not the only one. I feel just like you.

thanks for this…maybe next week they will do another round of accepting.

I’m still anxiously waiting for a final decision. I’m on vacation, though, with no access to my phone…hoping for good news!
Does anyone know how many “rounds” there are? Looking at past threads suggests that there are two waves of mass rejections and then some scattered z-list acceptances and rejections thereafter.

maybe they will send out some information today…if anyone hears please let us know. thanks so much.

@smartkids2 No news here yet…

i don’t understand why they are keeping us all hanging…when will the z list happen and it seems like they really should know by now…just really impatient

I have no legacy and don’t have too many hooks (upper middle class Asian). My scores were near perfect but not too unusual for my demographic. I had several longterm ECs, wrote a strong letter of interest, and had my counselor call to reiterate my passion for Harvard.

Well congrats @billygoats! My son who is off the wait list just left for an orientation at his new college and so far he’s not enthusiastic. He would have been wildly enthusiastic about attending Harvard. Hopefully it’ll all work out for the best.

Congrats @billygoats‌! Who is your admissions officer (the regional one), if you know?

Accepted off Brown’s waitlist and chose to attend over Cornell.
Still waiting for Harvard, but don’t know any more if I’m willing to attend…

Considering that Harvard has such a high yield, I have no idea what’s taking them so long.

That suggests that the yield from the waitlist is lower than from the late March admissions decisions. This would make sense, as most students who are waitlisted receive advice to “fall in love” with their second-choice college, lest they be even more disappointed when they are not accepted off the waitlist (as will happen to the great majority of the waitlisted). By the time late May/early June rolls around, many students have likely taken that advice. They’re getting all ready to go their alternative school of choice, they’ve likely visited the campus, paid registration fees, perhaps done housing selection, perhaps even started to look at courses they might take, etc.

As well, some students may have become disenchanted with Harvard over the past two months and with the experience of being on the waitlist.

Any advice for a Harvard wait list student, released from the wait list, but who’s totally ‘meh’ about the college he’s now going to? My son just spent two days and a night at his college orientation for UC Berkeley, and I’m sorry to say, the experience made him even less eager to attend. Big difference from the excitement he would be feeling if he was on his way to Harvard. He’s such a good fit for Harvard in many ways. He wants to major in math and minor in psychology. But UC Berkeley, where he’s planning to attend, is financially impacted and it turns out he probably won’t be able to get into any psychology electives.
