@gibby you have been a great help! So this means waitlist decisions should start coming in sometime this week and next week

^^ For some kids, yes – others may have to wait till June.

Called the admissions office today. The person that answered the phone said the admissions committee was in session today discussing the waitlist pool. May not be calling people early this week.

In the Crimson press release, it notes that the dean is planning to let some people know their status on the waitlist as of this week. “Fitzsimmons said that his office is already underway with reviewing those on the waitlist and hopes to send out notifications to some by the end of next week.”

@gibby do you know if it is true that legacies are given priority on the waitlist ? By the way I’m not a legacy.

^^ I highly doubt legacies are given priority at this point. Here is what I suspect happens: Admissions has spent the past 6 months crafting their mix for the class of 2018, with so many students having interests in CS, Bio, Econ, Chem, History, Humanities etc AND with so many students interested in debate, music, art, theater, newspaper reporting, club sports etc. When a student turns Harvard down, Admissions probably goes to the waitlist looking for a like-kind of student. So, if a student turned Harvard down with an interest in CS and music and those are your interests as well – you might stand a better chance than someone who was interested in Econ with an interest in club baseball. It’s all very random and subjective, probably more so now than in the RD round.

I actually disagree. The Crimson did an article that reported that last year 70 percent of students who were offered z-list were legacy admits. I think legacy is still an important factor. I bet there are a substantial number of the 15 or 20 who are admitted who are legacy.

^^ You’re confusing z-list with waitlist. Z-listed students are taking a gap year, and will be admitted to the class of 2019. They are NOT on the waitlist for the class of 2018. See: <a href=“Z-Listed Students Experience Year Off | News | The Harvard Crimson”>http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2010/3/30/students-year-harvard-zlist/

Actually, Harvard pulls kids from the waitlist when they consider Z-list. After they have finalized their class of 2018 (meaning after they’ve pulled the amount of kids they want to off the waitlist) they will go back to the waitlist to offer a select few who they believe are also excellent candidates and invite them to the class of 2019. Although the Z-list and waitlist are different things, they draw from the same pool.

I’ve read more than once that legacies are sometimes accommodated on the z-list (folks offered a position in the next year’s class - in this case, the class of 2019).

For those who have sent an update or a letter to the college, have you received any response?

In addition, I’ve read that the majority of z-listed students are notified of their status at the same time RD decisions go out and have the same May 1st deadline to accept the spot in the following year’s class.

@aimhigh2 did you send your update to the fileroom@fas.harvard email address? I don’t think its customary to receive a response to updates, gibby will probably correct me if i’m wrong.

@bob1235, I sent my updates to a regional officer (provided by my college counselor) and received a response?
also, does anyone know if diversity counts for anything during the waitlist process?

@AimHigh2 I sent my updates and got no response.

Z listers are not notified at the same time, I know because a bunch of people at my school in previous years have been Z listed and all found out beginning of june right after the waitlist closed

My point is just that if legacy is a big deciding factor with the z-list (the majority of whom come from waitlist
pool) I would assume that legacy is also a factor with the waitlist. Bottom line, it’s always a factor.

If you read through last year’s thread you’ll find that z-listers are extended offers from the waitlist.

Someone got a call today and was accepted off the waitlist today!!! It’s starting to happen guys! Good luck!

@AimHigh2 How did you hear about this and when did they get the call?
