well at some point (were not quite sure if its after some sort of preliminary round or if every applicant needs to) you need to send in a tape to demonstrate your oral-proficiency in the language..

umm.. my stats are pretty bad.. but hunstman kids are generally really solid applicants.. great grades.. great SATs.. lots of ECs related to foreign language / culture

um for me?

i went to chinese school for 10 years? (even though chinese isnt my target lang)
i skipped a year of spanish and was plannign to skip to spanish iv this year but didnt have time in my schedule so im self-studying at home
i skipped a year of french / finished ap last year (got a 5 on the exam)
i know cantonese to a certain extent (nope i dont have any roots in guangdong province / HK.. my familys taiwanese so i know a little taiwanese.. 'minnanyu'.. but its cause i have a cantonese friend and i learned from him).. i can do a little japanese / korean (just reading not understanding.. really basic stuff.. hiragana.. katakana.. some kanji.. from chinese of course)

740 on french sat

thats about the extent of the language thing

erff.. as for everything else.. heres the weak part of my app

3.57 unweighted gpa (higher weighted gpa which would account for the rank).. 620 verbal.. 800 math.. writing - 720
rank 8/297 (ouch it was 309 last year but 12 people dropped out.. damn them!!)

umm.. ap us history - 4.. physics - 730.. math iic - 760.. chem - 710.. bio,e - 640

one kind of weird recommendation from my history teacher (us history / european history).. erf.. hes advisor to young democrats.. and im president of young republicans...

he kind of made me sound like an anti-social loner who eventually learned to see the human side of things.. politics and partisanship aside.. lol.. but i did get an outstanding rec from my french teacher.. she went to penn for grad school and checked off the strongest in my __ years of teaching column for a couple categories i think..

wow! u seem pretty solid to me.
i'm shooting for chinese...even though that's the most competitive. sigh. i mean, i guess i could go for spanish but i don't really want to study spanish. it's not fun for me the way chinese is!

also, i didn't know you could look at your teacher Recs!

actually.. i didnt get to look at my french teachers rec.. she told me about it.. and as for my history teacher.. hes really bad at proofreading apparently so he had me look through it for typos..

All I can say is how much I totally respect all of you guys. I speak Russian, but thats because its my familys native language (I was born in Latvia, and moved to US when I was like 1)...but you guys all seem to be knockin out so many languages, and that is totally cool...i guess thats why Im going for engineering though haha

wow, lishnik, you're so nice!! (though i shouldn't be so surprised since many people on this forum are really nice) yea, i second lishnik's sentiment - yay for foreign languages!! (i'm applying as a foreign language major for the College ^^) lishnik, u're awesome too - engineering! 00 math/science - not my thing at all lol

i think it's funny how asian's don't apply for their language in the huntsman program lol it's just interesting ^_^ (though i shouldn't talk, cuz i study like every language but my own haha)

Yea I think at one point I considered doing Huntsman..back before I realized that engineering was where I belonged with my love for physics and math (more so physics)..and so since I knew I was a math person I was gonna do business and though about Huntsman..I never realized it required all this foreign language stuff...although I guess I mightve been ok since I speak Russian...actually later i considered doing MT, cause I still like the idea of business, but I decided it was too focused on one area...now I just plan on doing eng and than maybe going to business school or maybe med school..who knows

yea, i considered doing huntsman too, but i love learning so many different languages, so i didn't want to focus on just one language and business. i might do business in the future, but for now i just want to learn as many languages as i can lol (i think i said all this earlier on this thread....o well, lol, i like to talk ^_^)

lishnik - physics?? wow, props to you lol. i suck at physics >_< lol

I actually was torn between applying to M&T and applying to Huntsman...

It came down to do I want to go to a program where it would be easy for me to get in (M&T), or do I want to go to a program where I know I'd love what I would do (Huntsman)...

yea i guess not many people like it...but i dunno..its just so interesting to me..ive come to this conclusion. I'm one of those people that is always curious about why things happen the way they do, and when I find out why and it makes sense to me, I think it's really cool. And I think I may like physics so much because it explains soo many whys in the world. Its really cool when you understand it and you start making connections between different areas of physics, and it just seems like a big puzzle falling into place. You actually start to see it around you. Like Neo sees the matrix..oooooo..haha. It must run in my genes though, cause my uncle is a physicist, and my dad is an electrical engineer..and he is crazy good at physics too.

I just stumbled upon this thread. I'm only a junior, but my friend got into Huntsman last year. He had 1580 SAT, Perfect SAT IIs, Top 5 in Class, President of MUN, Editor-in-Chief of School Newspaper as well as as editor of a section of a statewide Chinese newspaper. Lots of ECs - I can't even name them all. Languages - English, French, and Chinese.

From his description and profile, I know that admissions to Huntsman is extremely competitive. As prospective students, I imagine many of you must be just as talented. I wish you guys the best of luck!

lishnik - haha, i have the same outlook as you, except with respect to languages. i love seeing how languages connect, and how words are derived. and i love seeing connections among languages of the same family, like the romance languages or the east asian languages. yea, scientific discoveries and things are cool, but i don't like em enough to actually research them lol. i love learning new languages and going somewhere and realizing you understand what people are saying!! though i guess you could call science a language lol cuz not everyone understands scientists/physicists/etc lol

oh, just a little stupid joke of mine: the three laziest people in the world are mathematicians, scientists, and musicians ^_^

i guess you could kinda classify me under all three of those categories, obviosuly not professionally though haha...but maybe your right..cause i am one lazy kid :)
