Huntsman class of 2018 ed thread

We are all filled with anxiety... any questions, concerns, may be something that just alleviates all the stress. lets talk.

:|
I heard they accept ~30 ED.
Half of those are split by US/international.
Half of those are split by male/female.
So everyone’s competing for 7 spots. That’s intense.

Sorry that probably just added more stress to everyone :l

hahahah it is what it is… hopefully it all works out

i guess no one is applying to huntsman… thats chill

Alakazam is appx correct.

Reminder that RA round students accepted don’t have to commit to Huntsman though, while ED round do (unless financial aid package is unacceptable).

Last year’s Huntsman program ended up being appx 40 strong (I could be off by a couple). And yes, appx 1/2 are international, 1/2 US…then of each appx 1/2 are female and 1/2 are male.

That means appx 10 students each from:

—Intl female
—Intl male
—US female
—US male

And in asking around within the program it seems that appx 2/3 to 3/4 are selected in the ED round. So 6-7 are chosen from each above category in the ED round out of the 10 available overall slots for each category.

But, reminder to all that you have (if you selected it) checked off a 2nd “bite at the apple” at Penn in that, if like DS last year, you selected (1) Huntsman and then (2) if not selected into Huntsman then yes, I do want to be considered for ED admission into _______ (and you selected either Wharton, CAS, SEAS or Nursing).

If you didn’t select consideration for ED for your second choice school, you can’t be rejected from Penn right? They just roll your app into the RD round for whichever school you chose?

Post #7 is correct. If you get a “no” for Huntsman, then in your case you’d go to RA round for admission to your specific school of (2nd) choice at Penn.

Others that selected a 2nd choice of “normal program/college” within Penn and requested it to be ED round would then drop into the ED pile for that given college of choice.

is it true that grades matter less to huntsman compared to the rest of penn (there is still a threshold)… they are more focused on passion and fit and how you can contribute to the program, and what unique aspects you can bring?

Not sure. Grades / test scores are still important, but that alone won’t get you into Huntsman. Yes, it’s the overall profile you present, but you can’t slack / be weak in any category.

I can specifically comment on one acceptance last year into Huntsman. No hooks, 3.82 UW / 4.3 W, 34 ACT in one sitting, all 5’s on AP tests (7) taken, student gov’t rep, prez of 2 significant to Huntsman high school organizations, very strong essays, worked throughout HS for family biz.

do you know how many apply ED total? and if you track a rare language how much advantage you would have?

Not sure about the rare language. What is it? Is it one of these (from Penn’s Huntsman site), because if not then I don’t think it would count since you’re expected to develop those language skills and Penn might not be able to help you do that with a rare language (Aramaic as an example):

"Each Huntsman student must declare a “target language” on the application. The target language is the language a student wishes to pursue as part of the curriculum and may be chosen from the following.

Arabic Hindi Portuguese
Chinese (Mandarin) Italian Russian
French Japanese Spanish
German Korean

Applicants must already have an intermediate proficiency in their target language."

I think the advantage would just be that the applicant pool is much smaller and if you’re a really standout applicant, then you would have a better chance? :/

@ivyparent43 hindi. only 1 kid is tracking hindi in the whole program right now. haha yeah… i mean all the applicants are so overly qualified though… it must be such a hard decision on their part.

I applied too. GL to everyone
Hope to see you at KC3 next year!

Chance?

Stats
SAT:2200 (CR:680 Math: 730 Writing:790)
SAT 2’s Math 2: 720 (Only took it once cause I was busy) U.S. History: 750 French w/ Listening: Took it November 2nd but I feel like I got an 800 it wasn’t hard really.
AP French: 5
AP World History: 4
AP English Language and Composition: 5
AP U.S. History: 5

Right now I’m taking AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Literature, AP Gov, and am self-studying AP Micro and Macroeconomics (Don’t know if I should take the exam or not)

I am Vice President of Model UN in my school (I have won several awards so far)
I am Head Lawyer for the Prosecution for Mock Trial
I have been volunteering since the summer of 2012 and still am at a Math Center. I tutor there and am the only high school student. I probably do around 20 hours a week. So, thus far for tutoring I have 200+ (or even 300+) hours.
I also was part of the Student Environmental Action Society group. It’s immense community service. I was Head of the Recycling Commitee freshman and sophomore year. So that alone is around 200+ hours.
So, in community service in general I have 500+ hours.
National Honor Society
French Honor Society
Math

Part of the National Society of High School Scholars (I don’t think that really matters haha)

I have a strong international background- I was born in Cameroon and raised in Cameroon for 13 years and only came to the U.S. in 2010. My dad is in business and he travels a lot (across nations). My native language is French.

I feel like my essays were very strong especially my Wharton and Huntsman Program ones as I really specified what I wanted to do and how the curriculum would help me attain my goals: To create a micro-financial institution which gives out small loans to owners of these informal sectors in the aim of bolstering them and one day turning them formal and therefore prosperous AND overall contribute in making a change in sub-Saharan Africa with the ultimate goal of making it an economically prosperous region.

My teacher recommendations must have been stupendous because the two teachers I asked (AP World and AP Comp) absolutely love me and the additional one by the Director of the Math Center I tutor in really galvanizes my character (maybe galvanizes isn’t the right word to describe it haha).

I’m applying to UPenn specifically for the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business (that or nothing basically) and my target language is French.

Realllly hoping I get in as it is really my dream school.

Oh yeah, one of my elder sisters attended the Huntsman Program (Class of 2011)

Chance?

all of us wish that we could chance students for huntsman… but it isnt rlly possible…

Hey everyone! I originally thought about posting here after ED results were out but I found myself checking this thread like crazy for updates so I thought I’d post one of my own.

Basically I’m targeting Korean and I’m fluent in it. I’m also at the intermediate level in Spanish and Chinese but since those are more common I didn’t want to target them. But I still want to improve my business mandarin and spanish skills. Will that be possible despite me taking Korean classes?

Oh and I’m fluent in Hindi but I heard they don’t like it when you target your native language.

Good luck everyone, I’ll be competing for one of the 10 US female spots!

Hmm to be fair, targeting Hindi might actually increase your chances of admission considering so few people choose it as a target language … If I am not wrong, only one person in the entire Hunstman Program targeting it currently. Up to you though. Targeting a non-native language is certainly more of a challenge :)

i think korean is unique tho… and indian person targeting korean is better than a korean targeting korean… and yes you will have the ability to target more than one language if you want… you can learn chinese/spanish in addition to korean. i think your language skills are quite appealing and should help you with your admissions as long as your other stats/ecs are at par
