@collegedad2013 It would appear, based on the dates of posts by finalists last year (calls received on Jan. 24, 2012), and the date on the official press release from last year (Jan. 25, 2012), that finalists are called the evening before official release. It would make sense that the same would be true for this year, but I don’t think they have officially stated it.

Did you guys notice that when you click on badge for “Intel STS 2013 Semifinalist” to see individuals who have earned this badge, the names aren’t in alpha order. Rather seems like a random order, but if you F5 it stays the same order. Lastly, if you click on the first guy and a few others on the top…they seem to have won prizes from other competitions…and most likely are competitive. Do any of you guys think that order (Top 40) resembles the list of finalists?

@despondant: based on last year, seems the calls will be Tuesday after 4pm local time (e.g. after school).

@run4success: the list prder is most likely based on when a person claimed the badge - if they never claimed it, they wouldn’t be listed there - even if they were a finalist.

As to the question about calls - several years ago calls began at about 3:00 in the afternoon on the day before the public announcement. I doubt that’s changed much. A few calls were also made the day of the announcements in the early morning and a few other finalists were announced live at their schools (mostly California). With the exception of the schools that make a production of the announcement- I think the STS staff tries to call everyone the day before the list goes public, but its hard for one or two people to call all 40 finalists in advance during normal business hours. Good luck to all!

Yes, if you received a call, please post what time you received so all of us can at least know if calls started (finished?) or not yet. I wish Intel had announced the exact time of notification (calls) like colleges tell the exact time you will hear if admitted or not. The “not knowing” if all finalists were already notified yet is tougher than learning one way or the other, I think!

Oh, collegedad, I didn’t think of that. Mmm… since usernames are anonymous could maybe people just say something like “I heard calls have been made already?” – I mean if all calls are made by say 4:30 pm, then having people wait till 5 or 6 or 8 pm before “assuming they simply didn’t make the finalists” seems to be very cruel.

Almost wish no calls were made and that they just published the list tomorrow as they did for the Semifinalists.

I wish the calls weren’t made either since if it is 4:15 and you don’t get a call…it only means that you didn’t get a call yet ;)

Assume 3 time zones, 40 finalists, 2 minutes per call (keep it brief, “congrats, you will get an email, got to make other calls”). The calls would be over for each time zone by around 4:30 local time.

But as Ranch mentioned they even made some calls the day of the announcement - but since the announcement is now at 7am EST, seems that is for people they didn’t get a hold of the first time.

I guess it depends if they ask the callers to call as close 4pm local time, or if they ask them to call at their convenience between 4-9pm for example.
