Official MIT 2010 EA Decision Thread

everyone who's deferred..i'm really sorry, but dont fret...there's still RD. and i know that a lot of us will be accepted RD, so dont worry too much...things'll definitely work out in the end. you all seem VERY talented, and it's almost shocking to read the stats of some of the deferrals. The thing that sucks is most of us were considered "shoo ins" by our friends, family, and teachers, so believe me, i know exactly how you guys are feeling. But everyone, i think you should read this: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=125531%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=125531</a>, because it really helped me when i wrote it and helped my friends when they were deferred. Best of luck to everyone.

I just got the deferral letter. I feel completely fine now, though! This is all over and I can deal with it. I thought about it today and I realized that even if I don't get into MIT, it may be a good thing. For example, I can't stay awake at night very well and at MIT I'd have to pull allnighters to survive. Also, we all have about a 15% chance now to get in RD. Don't forget 15% of us will get in, but this time a lot of the super-applicants from EA are gone, so it's really higher than that.

But now I will work on Stanford's app (due tonight) and then make another best effort on MIT later.

Decision: DEFERRED

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: didn't take, I submitted ACTs, my composite was a 35
[] SAT IIs: Math II: 800, Chem 790, US History 750
[] GPA: 4.66
[] Rank: 4% (23/530) at a competitive high school
[li] Other stats: All my Bs were during freshman year. I took two science courses last year
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: good
[] Teacher Recs: good
[] Counselor Rec: very good
[] Hook (if any): none?

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: IL, USA
[] School Type: Competitive, suburban, rich kids
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Sex: Female

[/ul]Other Factors:
[] Extracurriculars: tons of debate stuff, outside research and science internship, among other random things
[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: I honestly have no idea... freshman year Bs perhaps?

Other thoughts: None.

Okay, I have officially been deferred. No big surprise (see post on page 3)

Decision: Deferred (called)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2260 (800M, 740CR, 720W)
[] SAT IIs: 800 IIC, 790 US History, 710 Chemistry
[] GPA: 4.0 UW
[] Rank: 1/500
[li] Other stats:5's on AP Statistics, English, US History, and Psychology. 4's on Chemistry and European History. Currently taking the other 6 APs offered at my school and self-studying another on my own.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I thought they were good.
[] Teacher Recs: One excellent one from a math teacher I'm very close to and have worked with on independent research for several years. Another good--but not amazing--one from an english teacher.
[] Counselor Rec: Template. She has ~200 kids to write recs for.
[] Interview: Awesome. We really hit it off.
[] Hook (if any): None.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Florida
[] School Type: Large Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[/ul]Other Factors:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: President of Mu Alpha Theta 2 years, Math Team captain 4 years with several regional and some state/tri-state awards, volunteer coaching of a middle school mathcounts/algebra/geometry team, other boring clubs, cycling, and a 20 hr/wk job as manager at a used book store.

[li] Why I think I was deferred: I was pretty strong all around but not really amazing in anything (i.e. no hook).
[/li]

[li] Other thoughts: I'm sad because my best just wasn't good enough; I feel like I'm the most competitive I could have been coming from my background. Nobody at my school participates in IMO, IBO, etc so I never even knew about those sorts of things until I started thinking about college admission seriously last summer. I feel like if I'd gone to a more competitive high school and I could afford to not work to pursue more interesting things during summer I would have had a much better chance. As it is, I just look like a work-a-holic.[/ul]
[/li]

The bright side: I have Bright Futures at University of Florida so I should graduate nearly debt free.

i was refered with similar stats to all of those above me, but i thought i would have a chance because of my hook of a two national first place awards, one for computer animation and the other for debate.

now, no offense, but for the user prodigy who was the second to post his/her acceptance on the first page, but the are MANY of us who have much better all-around application material. and yet you were accepted with sub-par substanence (for mit, that is) and no hook whatsoever, what gives?

again, please do not take any offense to this, i am merely questioning the admissions officer's decision making process...

prodigy indeed
my answer: cause its MIT

'cause he was probably more of a match. or would've contributed more to the community (no, i don't mean community service)

Why I was rejected and not deferred: I wish someone could tell me...seriously... :(

Chaneda, you were probably rejected because your scores are sub-par for MIT and really put you at a disadvantage in such a competitive applicant pool. I'm sure you'll be happy wherever you end up.

I almost wish I had been rejected instead of deferred; now I have to cling to that sliver of hope for 3 more agonizing months.

Chaneda, you're international? I thought internationals can't apply EA for MIT. I'm guessing you're a US citizen, but are you counted as international. I don't see why you would be rejected outright.

I just noticed that a lot of the decision responses are incorrectly formatted. The original template is missing an ending
tag, causing all of the bullets in the last section to show up as
. Perhaps someone should fix the template?

Decision: Accepted
