OFFICIAL MIT EA Decisions - Class of 2014

Accepted!!!

[]SAT II:800 Math 2, 770 Physics
[]ACT:
[]GPA:4.0 UW, 4.4 W
[]Rank:Top 5% ish?
[]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB):[/ul]AMC 12-111, AIME 4
Subjective[ul]
[]Essays:Should be good!
[]Recs:A little questionable…I wasn’t outstanding in either class (APUSH or Physics Honors) but they should be okay. Counselor rec should be good, because they gave priority to NMSF’s
[]Supplementary Material:None
[]Summer Activities:Missionary-type stuff for the past two years
[]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize):Men’s volleyball, actually a decent sport to have listed b/c they tend to do very well on the whole at the D3 level[/ul]
Personal[ul]
[]Location:Silicon Valley, CA
[]High School Type:Midsize-Large Public (1800 students)
[]Ethnicity:Chinese
[]Gender:M[/ul]
Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars:Math team, Volleyball, Debate, Senior Class Vice President, Church Youth Group
[]Awards:10th place regional NorCal math league, 10th place national french contest, NMSF, AP Scholar with Distinction, nothing really major
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Sports. Without a doubt, although I’d say my academics are in the mix with the accepted students, I don’t have a super-strong math/science competition background, and I can’t use my school as an excuse since we qualifed 8 to USAMO and 7 to ISEF last year! Volleyball and possibly student gov’t (senior class officer) probably helped me stand out and potentially contribute to the community at MIT. With that said, I still cannot believe I was admitted to my dream school (and I probably don’t deserve it!). Blessed be Your name when the streams of abundance flow (=
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get in–anyone who applies for MIT definitely has the potential to be successful no matter where one might go for undergraduate education–and be humble in your achievement (though it is amazing) if you’re accepted!

Good luck to those deferred and to those rejected, you’re still amazing people because you applied to MIT EA, which is like one of the most selective schools in the country, so I’m sure you all have great stat’s and activities.

[]Why you think you were deferred: Non-outstanding White Male
[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Congrats if you got in EA. Hopefully the RD will be less competitive but I’m going to either Illinois or Cal Poly  [/ul]

So I think some of you need this clarified:

Deferral does not mean that there was something wrong with your application. You don’t need to rewrite essays, you don’t need to retake standardized tests, you don’t need to late-add a ninth AP class to your schedule - your application was strong enough already. Out of a quick poll of my friends, ~80% of us were deferred and then accepted RD. And the most that any of us did was send an update letter if something particularly exciting happened (my FIRST and Quiz Bowl teams won awards, so I sent updates). So seriously, relax, and congrats about being competitive enough to be seriously considered by MIT!

And, for those of you who were admitted…I can’t believe there are 2014s already. I feel so old.

edit: Mollie, let me know if this is the wrong place for this post - there seem to be a lot of comments in the ‘what should I have done better’ bit regarding test scores / GPA and stuff, but I’m not actually sure if anyone reads through all of these besides prospectives and upperclassmen :)

As much as this is an interesting thread, people reading it should keep in mind that this thread is not representative of the actual proportions of admitted/deferred/rejected students. According to MIT’s Admissions blog, approximately 10% were admitted, 20% rejected and 70% deferred.
[MIT Admissions | Blog Entry: “EA Decisions”](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/the_selection_process_application_reading_committee_and_decisions/ea_decisions.shtml)

Accepted

[]SAT II: chem (800), bio molec (800), math II (800), french reading (760)
[]GPA: 4.0 unweighted (school doesn’t weigh GPAs) Also, for my courses + grades section, I got 4 A+s during this semester’s first grading period, so I mentioned that but I don’t know if it mattered.
[]Rank: school ranks to the decile ._.
[]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): APs // Soph yr: Comp Sci AB (5), Junior yr: AP Language and Comp (5) Bio (5) Calc BC (5), This year: Stats, Government, French, Chem[/ul]
Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: decent. I thought they were okay when I wrote them, but after I submitted MIT and started working on my comm app essays I definitely liked my comm app essays a LOT lot more, and started liking my MIT essays a LOT less, haha. I have a very hard time writing short responses, esp. under 250 words! Though now that I look at them again, I guess they are pretty good. I attempted to write in a “lively” manner.
[]Recs: Pretty darn good I hope - how good? Not sure - I was a good student and my teachers liked me, but I was definitely never their “favorite” student.
[]Supplementary Material: Rec from professor I worked with over the summer / I also included a link to my art portfolio/website on the MIT app, but I’m not sure whether that helped or not.
[]Summer Activities: 6-wk endocrinology research internship in Boston, art program, reading, college classes in Physics and Psychology, Natl Symposium for Debate (NSD), and traveling!!
[]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Nada![/ul]

[]Extracurriculars: Red Cross Pres., Youth Exec Board, Science Fair + Research + Sci Olympiad, Programming + Sci Club, art!
[]Awards: Intel ISEF 09 3rd place, Local Sci Fair grand prize in Biological Sci, Engineering special award, Bay Area Sci Olympiad 2nd in event, Natl. Grand Concours du Francais 7th x2, Natl Merit Semifinalist, some debate awards, some art/writing awards, etc.
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m not sure! Maybe a combo of the science-loving-me and the artistic-me?
[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I absolutely didn’t expect it. I think my interview went very well though. I’m just really thankful and I feel quite lucky to be me  I’m so glad to be free for winter break! (Going to travel … but I’m also going to start brushing up on my physics/CS/Bio knowledge :stuck_out_tongue: ) Since I stayed in Boston for 6 wks this summer (my first time ever in the east coast!) I have a good feel for the city, and it’s a wonderful area! I love jogging along the esplanade at night. Best of luck to everyone else! There are definitely a couple of wonderful friends I’m rooting for once RD come around

Another funny thing I thought I’d mention: when I first read the acceptance letter online, my eyes glanced over “pleasure to offer you admission” but it didn’t quite register, then my eyes flickered to the “congrats” at the end, then traveled to the middle where I read “fine print.” For a split second, my irrational-from-anticipation-self thought there would be some “fine print” on the bottom of the letter saying: “just kidding! You were rejected.” Haha, that would be mean.

[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: If you’re a good fit and you really like the school, that should shine through in your essays and interviews…and you may hear this a billion times, but be yourself!! That’s what got me in =)[/ul]

I’ve won many local and national awards and have shown pieces in many galleries, and I’ve definitely shown my passion for architecture through everything I’ve done up to this point. [*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: There’s plenty of good colleges out there. Besides, college is what you make it, and getting in doesn’t denote someone’s intelligence. An URM student in my school got in, but I still have higher SATs and more math involvement than him, so did he really win?[/ul]

[]Awards: RPI Medal, gifted program
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: MIT seems to accept only the people they’re totally sure about in the EA round and defer everyone else; my GPA and class rank probably gave them some doubt
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Obviously it was disappointing to be deferred. I’ll be updating MIT about another internship with an engineering company and explaining how the gifted program affects class rank, but of course there will be lots of other very impressive applicants in the next round. At least now I’m able to work in earnest on applying to other colleges :)[/ul]
