OFFICIAL MIT RD Decisions - Class of 2013

Decision: ACCEPTED after getting deferred and with a 3 on the AP Physics B test---I thought it would kill my app!

[] GPA: 3.91 UW? 4.00 really
[] Rank: 1/713
[] Other stats: Nothing other than my sweltering degree of awesomeness ^^
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Hospital volunteer (9-12), varsity math team captain(9-12), solo/orchestral violin(9-12), "granite state challenge" /quiz bowl team captain (9-12), and red cross (11-12)
[] Job/Work Experience: Freelance PHP Programmer/Website Developer
[] Essays (subject and responses): Decent but definitely the worst of all my applications. Essay 1: I do politics for fun Essay 2: My interest in nuclear engineering because of research internships; never mentioned Course # for MIT...do it if you're a future applicant Essay 3: My commonapp essay-My youthful interest in wrestling and how it has transformed into my appreciation for the human mind Essay 4: I talked about a minisite I built and linked to it. It was really crappy and a last minute idea. I should have talked about my research internships instead...
[] Teacher Recs: Absolutely horrible I'm guessing since they were rushed. Maybe not...
[] Counselor Rec: She doesn't know me at all since I go to a school with 3400 kids.
[] Applied on: EA -- mid-October I think?
[] Hook (if any): See supplementary material-->MIT Professor Rec, another MIT prof volunteered to mention me to admissions after I was deferred
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: New Hampshire
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Huge public that sends one to Harvard, 2-3 to Cornell, 1 to Dartmouth (except it's always the same kid that gets into Harvard), and 0 to MIT. Every once in a while 1 to Penn, 1 to Brown.
[] Ethnicity: White
[li] Gender: Why you askin? ;D Male
[/li]

Since it's not here and this is important:

[li] Supplementary Material: Resume, 2 research abstracts from past two summers working at MIT Nuclear Engineering Lab and Harvard SEAS Lab, 2 mentor recs from the two respective experiences [I only saw the MIT professor one and it was sheerly phenomenal], an essay about my heritage with a letter of continued interest after being deferred, and an essay about my research experiences and where I want to take my research interests at MIT, and an update when I was named as a presidential scholars candidate for my state
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:

Future applicants, if you have any questions, please ask me. It has been a long and tumultuous road for me. I was deferred by MIT early and was utterly devastated. It has been uphill since, with an acceptance from Chicago, a likely letter from Dartmouth, and now this. I can't wait to meet all you great people in Cambridge! MIT is my second choice after Harvard (legacy), so if I don't get to be with you guys, I'll be right next door! :D

I just shaved my head bald to celebrate...xD

Rejected. I liked their rejection letter; it was nice and gentle. Oh well.

Congratulations to those who got accepted.

REC: as far as i can tell excellent (had my ap calc/ap physics teacher write one)
Interview: went really well
Submitted an architecture portfolio

Hook: not quite sure...i heard they really like 800s on Math (have a separate pile for them-was told by someone who works there)...maybe my interview...or maybe my portfolio

Hope to see everyone at CPW

Not sure if i am going to attend MIT - really want to get into Notre Dame - but MIT and ND are 1a and 1b

Rejected :-/

*Decision: REJECTED *

Will upload stats later when I get around to it.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: More disappointed than I should be since I'm looking to pursue economics/finance (MIT has Sloan and a decent Econ dept.) but somewhat relieved I won't have to take a rigorous science schedule first year since it bores me to death.

Congrats to everyone who got in, to the rest it's not the end of the world and hopefully the other ivies will be more favorable to us.

[/ul]*General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: * Self-sabotaged my application; no interview, essays were pretty much half-assed things slapped together, didn't send in my midyear. Parents made me apply even though I'm humanities oriented just because my math/science grades are okay; too much grief caused by this, so it definitely shone through in the application. Regardless, congrats to all those who got in! Hope you have a great time at MIT or wherever else you're attending (and may your financial aid packages, if you need them, be huge!) :D

Strengths: EC's; Tests; Recs

Weaknesses: No research, not a lot of engineering ec's, could have higher GPA maybe. Also one essay was mediocre.

[/ul]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: MIT picks peculiar people.. some people that are passionate and qualified get rejected and some get accepted, some people that seem average also get accepted.. the people who apply are already way above average. Tip to juniors: If you want to get into MIT you need to have great essays and do very well in higher level math and science classes. I don't think I'm as engineering/science oriented as the typical MIT student. I also left this app for the very last day, was not an ideal school for me, although its incredible for engineering. Oh well :) cheers!
