Datnab just confirmed that I am a NMSF, which surprises me, as I thought I was a long shot.

207 qualifies in Michigan!

Got NMSF with a 209 in AZ. I have friends in AZ that also got NMSF. They scored 208 and maybe 204. The latter doesn’t remember her exact score. So at least a 208 for AZ.

Also, the National Merit people will be releasing the names of all the winners and cutoffs to media on September 12? Or is that just a rumor?

Sincere thanks to Datnab for confirming my daughter in Texas is on the list with a 218. We were pretty sure from previous posts but it is great to know for sure!

No, it is not just a rumor. [National Merit Scholarship Corporation - NMSP](http://www.nationalmerit.org/press_releases.php)

Thanks to valuable info from Datnab, I can confirm that 209 is a qualifying score in Michigan. While I am excited and very happy about my daughter’s good fortune, I am also embarrassed about the somewhat unfair leg-up our state has been afforded.

I’ll add that Datnab sent me some information this evening which establishes s/he really does have access to complete and reliable information. Thanks for sharing, Datnab! (I don’t think you have revealed your gender, right?)

Thanks Descartesz, I have updated. You may also wish to remove OH from remaining states and highlight.

Commended (national cutoff)=200 /B
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not a NMSF receives commended status. This group represents the highest 50,000 scorers.

UGGH… still haven’t received anything and really want to know about Texas… GRR I thought it was impossible, but the scores are all dropping so much…

Why are the cutoffs going down??

Sent from my Desire HD using CC

The scores went down because the scores of all students went down. NMSF is based on a state’s share of the top percentage of test takers - they have a set number of semi-finalists, and base each state’s share on the percentage of graduating seniors from those states. If overall scores drop, the scores of the kids selected for NMSF will also drop.

There is anecdotal evidence that the test may have been harder than previous years (or that last years was easier given some of the score jumps last year), or that is was scaled more harshly. I know of several students whose scores remained the same from 2010 to 2011 testing, though they were top students whose scores should have risen a small amount - and in fact they took the SAT within a few month and their SAT scores were significantly higher, without any preparation programs (this group took the SAT early to form a baseline, because they could get question and answer service).

^^ The test was harder. Harder test = lower scores. Same number of kids are NMSF and each state is still receiving their percentage (that state’s % of total US graduates).

Congratulations everyone!!! This years thread is sooo much better to read than last year when so many people were disappointed.

Datnab is for real, if anyone is still wondering - and thanks so much, Datnab! Saw the post above where 10% of their senior class made it - our school will graduate close to 500 and D was the only one… I think there are actually plenty of kids smart enough to make the cutoff (D’s class ranking is about 15) but perhaps because the school just doesn’t educate parents enough as to the financial implications of becoming a finalist - which is sad since the money would mean the world to most of the kids in our school.
