Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

Talked with my GC today, and she has the book w/ the cut offs. She read to me that 211 is the cut off in NH.

Kind of new at this… but can I ask a silly question? If this is National Merit program, why re the qualifying scores so different in different states? Why is there not a national scoring scale. Seems unfair that a student in one state with a 220 may not get NMSF while a student in another state with a 204 does get it… Sorry if the answer to this was posted in some earlier discussion. I am just curious…

The disparity is discussed in many places but here’s a good place to start: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/answer-sheet/college-admissions/if-you-live-in-west.html

If the information Datnab has is correct (and it looks spot on)…209 does not make the cutoff in Florida.

Congratulations to all the semi finalists!

I think it’s because each state has a different required education curriculum…

The number of NMSF from each state equals 1% of high school graduates from each state. So, they are picking a certain number of students not a score from each state.

You can think of a National semifinalist, as you would a US congressman in the US House of Representatives. Although elected by people in their state, they are considered US Congressmen/ women. At least, this is how I have come to understand it.

Just to confirm OH my son is on list and at 212.

@perraziman- I think it might be 1/2 of one percent. 3 million grads, 15,000 NMFs.

My inbox is once again empty.

I can confirm that the cutoff for Georgia is above 213 as my friend who scored a 213 did not qualify.

Got it, Datnab.

The practice of state cut-offs is discussed in the FAQ in the top thread of this forum. It is a long-time NMSC practice which has been justified but vaguely (as in the article clapuma links) as “encouraging participation”. My own belief is that it is done this way to encourage, more precisely, local media coverage and local sponsorship. Local media find only local qualifiers of interest to their readers/listeners/viewers and sponsors often prefer to support students that live nearby, not in some distant city and state. Without this kind of approach there might be far less money available to award.

I believe you are right, celesteroberts, 1/2 of 1%. Thank you.

Texas is above 214, as ds didn’t make it. Anyone out there a 215 who can confirm whether they made it? Also, ds’s school had 27, which is about right. That’s 10% of the graduating class.

Still waiting to hear from DS school and anything confirming in MN…DS was called to the principal’s office today at the end of the day, but by the time he got there she had left for the day. Hoping it’s that she wants to deliver the good news to him in person! Usually bad news (trouble) is handled by the asst. principal.

And I can now tell you that a 206 DOES qualify in the lowly state of West Virginia! Yay for all 12 of us!

10 states as yet unheard from.

Regarding boarding schools. As far as I know boarding schools (I believe defined as prep schools with more than 50% out-of-state resident students) are assigned to one of several (10?) multi-state regions. NE boarding schools, presumably, are located in the six NE states. Other regional breakdowns are unknown to me. It appears that each region receives the highest cutoff from among its constituent states. As NE includes MA, and MA is usually the highest national cut-off score, the NE boarding schools often share the highest cutoff. In years past I have seen cutoffs from a few other regions posted here but the NE score is most often posted.

perazziman - thanks so much for your diligence. There are some small errors and omissions in the template you are re-using (“ID” is missing from last year’s score list, deltas for NE boarding schools and Commended cutoffs, for example). Would you mind refreshing with this one? I have “spaced out” the bolding codes for your convenience.
