Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

Its official for my daughter – the school gave her a paper today stating that she made it to semi-finalist.

So cool that your schools do special things. Last year our school had 32 students to qualify. They barely acknowledged the kids. I was disappointed.

Its official for my daughter as well. Just got an email for school in regards. So we know for sure 211 is a good # for Florida. Doing the HAPPY DANCE. :)

Well it looks like my informed guesses based on public data were close but not close enough to be of real value. I guessed 13 states. 5 were spot on, 3 were overstated by 1 and 2 were understated by one (I’m sorry about those). Then there were the shockers. I was way too conservative on MD and MI (overstated by 2) and flat wrong on NY (overstated by 3). If I have time I’ll see if there’s something I missed but it looks like projecting cutoffs will remain an inexact science.

It’s fascinating though that not a single state went up this year.

Well, if what they said about Texas is correct, he didn’t make it. It is just hard knowing that if we lived in 19 different states, he would have!!!

Try knowing that if you’d lived in one of 47 other states your kid would have made it. And having lived in 2 of those other states (and had kids in high school there) knowing that it has nothing to do with the quality of education being better here, in fact, it is way worse.

But colleges do know about the uneven awarding of NM status. And many grant just as good scholarships based on SAT results. So, onward.

what was texas cutoff?

mrombado: Texas’ cutoff is 216. See post #582.

I know this sounds strange to some of you but I’m thankful my D’s score was well enough below the past year’s cutoffs that we knew upfront that she would be commended instead of a SF. I can’t imagine the stress we would have endured the past few months if she knew her score was on the borderline and, god forbid, if she had missed the cutoff by one or two point!! I am very proud of my D for achieving commended and National Hispanic Scholar. She is not one of those genius kids, she has just worked very hard her entire educational career and I am confident that her grades, scores, ECs and recommendations will secure her a spot and a respectable scholarship at a university that is right for her.

We are in TX. My daughter found out today that she was
semi-finalist with a 217. She was right on the bubble, so we barely dared to hope. My son missed by a few points when he was a senior. Glad last year’s higher scores weren’t a new trend!
If she scored a 2110 on her SAT last fall, what’s everyone’s opinion on if she should take it again for best chance as a finalist?

SNinTX

For purposes of advancing to NMF status, a 2110 SAT score is high enough to confirm the PSAT. I believe the confirming SAT score cutoff in each of the past two years was 1960. Others will correct me if I am wrong.

The bigger question you should be considering is whether 2110 is high enough to get your daughter accepted into the top schools. If she is aiming for a Top-20 school, she should probably retake the test to try to increase the score.

OMG! So I don’t know about you all who made it but since yesterday…we got a call from Georgia tech and MIT! Goodness! Is about to get crazy! Feels like athletics…my oldest daughter was a highly ranked pole vaulter in the state and she would get phone calls all the time…is this how it’s going to be?

is a 1990 sat good enough to confirm psat? also she got a 33 or 34 forget which ion her act’s

I think 1960ish is usually high enough, but the NMSC people can tell you the required score. I called for my child last year and they told me the SAT required score over the phone.

^^ momof2greatkid

I’m not sure if 1990 is good enough. I’ve read in past posts this year that if you call the National Merit Scholarship Corporation office in Evanston, IL, they will tell you the exact confirmation score. Why don’t you do us a favor of Google searching the phone number, give them a call, and let all of us know what you find out. I suspect they won’t release the info to you until next week, on Sept. 12. After all, that’s the first date that we’re all supposed to find out who made NMSF, absent this CC forum.

well if 1960 was good enough before according to u why wouldnt a 1990 which is higher be good enough now being the psat cutoffs were lower?

The cut-off for AZ is 212. My counselor has confirmed this and Datnab has let me know for sure that I did not qualify for NMSF. I scored a 211 :(

Found out today from GC that S qualified in MN with a 214. The only one at his private high school!

Sent from my SGH-T769 using CC

I tried to follow the posts back but not having any luck. Who is Datnab, and why/how does he/she have a list? My S has a 218 in Texas, so very hopeful, but would like to confirm!
