•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Sibling also applied, also rejected
Reflection •Strengths: Extracurriculars, Interest (Campus Visit), Solid Essay, Decent Test Scores (not Math2)
•Weaknesses: GPA, Math 2,
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: This year 33,200 applicants applied so maybe my essay wasn’t unique enough, GPA was weak, Math 2 was weak.
•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted University of Washington in Seattle, Rejected WUSTL
General Comments: NU was my dream school until today lol. My friend was accepted over me but i’m happy for her. I tried not to be too optimistic about the admission results because YOU CAN NEVER TELL. Rejection doesn’t make you a bad student. If the college doesn’t need you then maybe it’s for the best. Try to view college decisions in a more optimistic light because going to a college will not define you. It’s not the end of the world but it can be extremely disappointing. BEST OF LUCK TO ALL FUTURE APPLICANTS AND CURRENT APPLICANTS.

National Merit Finalist. 4x Youth in Government Nationals nominee/attendee. State debate semi-finalist, Army ROTC full scholarship.

•Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): School Newspaper (Opinions Editor), Cross Country and Track (Varsity), Youth in Government (President of Senate, President of delegation), church lector, National Honor Society, debate, forensics

•Job/Work Experience: /

•Volunteer/Community service: Minimal, and neglected to mention Democratic Part Volunteering

•Summer Activities: Naval Academy Summer Seminar, KEMPA Newspaper Seminar, Youth in Government Conference on National Affairs

•Essays: Common App about where my passion for writing came from, good but could have used more zazz. Northwestern essay I thought was great, and scrutinized by my mother, a journalist

•Teacher Recommendation: Excellent, from my newspaper adviser and APUSH teacher

•Counselor Rec: Mediocre at best. I am terrified of this man’s incompetence. He was constantly frustrated at anything I needed him for. By chance I saw the first Secondary School Report he tried to send in and it was incomplete, marred with inaccuracies, and without regard to any accomplishment outside of school. I caught that and ensured it was more accurate, but his recommendation? Not a clue.

•Additional Rec: Excellent, from my debate coach

•Interview: Wasn’t available

Other

•State (if domestic applicant): Wisconsin

•School Type: Good Public

•Ethnicity: White

•Gender: M

•Income Bracket: On paper, way upper. In actuality, with finances tied in retirement and group investments, middle class

•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): /

Reflection

•Strengths: Excellent journalism accomplishments, probably essays

•Weaknesses: GPA/Rank, volunteering, accomplishments tied in extracurriculars that I know people can abuse easily for resumes

•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My school has course loads that range from easiest to the best, but doesn’t weight grades. It nonetheless keeps rank. Moreover, semester saw a drop in 30 students, arteficially pushing my rank above 20th %. I took 6 APs my junior year, which means nothing when a 3.79 means 80/390. Its guidance department has terrorized almost everyone I know with incompetence, and relies on buddy-buddy instead of helping students. Also, being a White Midwestern Male couldn’t have helped.

•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected Washington University

General Comments: I know I should have done more for my GPA. But I should have also played the GPA/Ranking game at my school. I’ll be happy wherever I end up, and way to go everyone who got in!

Go 'Cats!

How are any of you being notified of their decision. We haven’t heard anything at all

Rejected from CAS. F**k

Rejected from Medill. ~4.3 weighted GPA, 2240 SAT w/ 800 on writing, editor on the newspaper, good rec from journo instructor that I think said I was one of the best writers the program had ever had. Common App essay was written at the last minute and not great but had a lot do with my passion for journalism and human rights and using new media to connect the world and pinpoint injustices (maybe too cliche? “spreading awareness” type of thing), good supplement that I thought demonstrated very strong interest. Meh… Though I took almost all AP classes in high school, I had a lot of Bs, and I think my mid-year report did me in since I got three Bs - one in a CP class  Bleeeeech. But also, of course, Medill’s very competitive, and I’m sure there were tonssss of great applicants. I was also starting to question whether I really wanted to go there since it’s quite pre-professional, and I’m not absolutely certain I want to pursue journalism.

Sorry for not following the format. Congrats to everyone who got in!
