***Official Northwestern Class of 2018 RD Results ONLY****

<p>[ b]Decision: Accepted to the College of Communication!! **</p>

<p>Objective:
ACT: 35 Writing: 8
GPA UW: 3.96 W: 4.17
Ranking: 1 of 52
AP: APUSH (4)
Senior Year: AP Stats, three dual-credit classes, calculus</p>

<p>subjective
extracurriculars: cheer, dance, theatre (president), choir (All-State Delegate), colorguard (captain and choreographer, quiz bowl (captain), Student Ciouncil, Debate, NHS
Work: 6 months at daycare, 1+ yr waitressing
Volunteer: 180 hours at the local zoo!
Essays: I wrote it about my teddy bear (sighs). There were a few mistakes.
Teacher Rec: Very Good Online APUSH teacher (he thought I was great) and English teacher/theatre director
Counselor Rec: Good
State: South Dakota
School type: Small public (but we DON’T ride buffalo to school!)
White Female
Income bracket: Middle (but as we have farmland, Northwestern counts us as millionaires)
Hooks: First Gen, from South Dakota
Strengths: Recommendations, High ACT score, NU essay
Weaknesses: Not many AP classes, Common App essay
Other Acceptances: Nowhere interesting, just some third tier schools that offered me money. NU was my unreachable goal.</p>

<p>I think I was accepted because I’m from South Dakota and don’t have terrible stats. Honestly, if I were NU, I would have taken one look at my Common App essay and thrown the entire application out the window. Hooray for Underrepresented areas! I’m extremely excited to have been admitted, but won’t be able to attend due to the cost. </p>

<p>Accepted! Medill School of Journalism</p>

<p>Essays: I love writing and I think common app was one of my best pieces. Talks about baby brother passing away. Additional essay describes the low in ninth and tenth grade grades due to mom having cancer. Why NU talks about me hearing about NU for the first time after my friend got a sweatshirt from there five years ago and how much I admire Medill.
Teacher Recommendation: 4, my journalism teacher’s and English teacher’s rocked, according to my counselor.
Counselor Rec: Good, she’s been so supportive this year.
Additional Rec: 2, one from dean of students (who is executive government sponsor) and one from my cherubs professor.
Interview: none. Called global wildcats once but it doesn’t count at all.
*I have extra many recommendations b/c I was deferred and I could send a couple more.</p>

Weaknesses: GPA, sats on the low side for a regular applicant, income.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I am not sure just a mixture of data, faith and northwestern’s good heart.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted: MSU, Saint Michael’s College, DePaul. Waiting for: U of Richmond, Lehigh, George Washington University and Washington and Lee.
General Comments:
Congratulations to everyone who got in! Hope to see you in the fall!!!</p>

<p>Hey guys, a couple tips for posting the result in the desired format.</p>

<ol>
<li>Remove all the space after “[”. It is put there intentionally to silent the code so you can see the symbol. You can use a word processor to do a find "[ " & replace with “[”.</li>
<li>For the size option, remove the “+” sign and change “2” to “4”. The old code does not work on the new forum.</li>
</ol>

Privileged to be in the position I am. My advice to future applicants is to show them what you are passionate about and tell them why you would be a great fit, however, I’m not an expert on the process.</p>

[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted at WashU, deferred at Yale, rejected at MIT</p>[/li]
<p>[/ul]General Comments: Sorry to everyone who did not get good news. Obviously anything I say isn’t gonna seem very helpful, but I would like to stress that you will be happy anywhere you go! Maybe it won’t be your first choice, or even your fifth choice, but you still have the ability to make college the best experience it can be. Studies have shown that a person’s success is not dependent on the college he/she attends, but his or her own determination and hard work. My mother went to a college with a 90% acceptance rate, and yet she is still just as successful as her colleagues, most of whom came from wealthy families and attended ivy leagues.</p>

[</em>]Job/Work Experience: Receptionist at parents’ hair cutting stores (Not sure this made it anywhere on my apps)
[<em>]Volunteer/Community service: Did a lot through theatre (100 hours), organized a “One Homeless Night” event with NHS, organized food drive with NHS
[</em>]Summer Activities: Interlochen Arts Camp for Screenwriting, multiple week-long theatre camps
[<em>]Essays: “Why Northwestern” essay wasn’t my favorite essay but it addressed the prompt and gave a little insight into what lead me to want to pursue TV and Film. I liked my Common App essay because it showed my personality. People that read it enjoyed it and thought it was very “me.”
[</em>]Teacher Recommendation: Two of my English teachers. I think they both liked me and are good writers, so I’d say they were probably pretty good. I didn’t read them, but they offered to let me read them, so I’d assume they didn’t say anything bad!
[<em>]Counselor Rec: She didn’t know me that well and isn’t that knowledgeable with selective schools. She handed me like five printed copies of the letter, so I had to tell her I needed them sent online…again. I did read the letter and it was very template-y and generic, but true and all good things, so I can’t complain too much!
[</em>]Additional Rec: My screenwriting teacher from Interlochen wrote me an amazing letter of recommendation. Although I only knew her for three weeks, I felt very close to her and she was very helpful in choosing where to apply and I was very thankful that she wrote me the letter.
[<em>]Interview: This was my first college interview, so I was pretty nervous. I also never formally visited the school and it had been a few years since I’d been on campus, so I was worried they would judge me! Also, it was a really long day of interviews and I was in the last time slot, so my interviewer was visibly very tired and just wanted to get out of there. The interview didn’t go terribly, but it definitely wasn’t great. Conversation was kind of forced and sometimes awkward.

[<em>]Strengths: Essays- I’m told I have a very personal style of writing that really shows who I am, which a lot of places say helps you stand out. I applied to the School of Communication and have a very clear interest in TV and Film, which probably helped. Going to Interlochen and getting the great recommendation to back up what I was saying was probably good too.
[</em>]Weaknesses: Not the strongest test scores, but I’m not sure if it’s a weakness or not because they aren’t really low. Interview was awkward, but again, not sure if it’s a weakness because they don’t carry that much weight.
[<em>]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I had the stats that allowed the admissions officers to take me seriously, and the essays, interests and personality that made them think I’d fit in. Although really, the more I read stats and all that, the more I realize it’s a total crap shoot. I consider myself extremely lucky.

<p>Decision: Accepted McCormick</p>

<p>Objective: •SAT I : 2040 (didn’t submit, essay was terrible)
•ACT: 33
•Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0 UW/ 4.5 W
•Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 5/423
•AP (place score in parenthesis): 5’s in APUSH, Macro, AB Calc, Psych, English Lan. 4 on World History
•Senior Year Course Load: 7 AP Classes
•Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Hispanic Scholar, National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Distinction (others less notable)
Subjective:
•Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Football and Soccer, Club Soccer, HOSA, NHS among others
•Job/Work Experience: Soccer Referee
•Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer with NHS and my church often doing several projects.
•Summer Activities: do a lot of traveling
•Essays: I’m a math/science guy but I gave the essays the best I had (like 7 out of 10 I’d say)
•Teacher Recommendation: Probably very good
•Counselor Rec: Probably very good
•Additional Rec: none
•Interview: none
Other
•State (if domestic applicant): Texas
•School Type: Public
•Ethnicity: Hispanic
•Gender: M
•Income Bracket: ~140,000
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM in Engineering. Was born in Mexico (now a permanent resident of the U.S,)
Reflection
•Strengths: my hooks, my grades in school (took the heaviest workload I could), I still like to think colleges like seeing a successful multi-sport athlete that can make grades so my EC’s
•Weaknesses: Standardized test scores could have been better but I suppose they made the cut.
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Hooks, overall/holistic value to the school as a minority<br>
•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: UT Austin Rejected: MIT
Waiting on: Stanford and Princeton (though I’m not exactly banking on either haha)
General Comments:
Congrats to all those admitted. To those who weren’t so fortunate, please know that a decision from a college doesn’t define who you are. In the end it comes down to how hard you work while in college and after graduating. You can go to a local community college and still be successful if you work hard enough so just keep your head up! You will end up where you are meant to!</p>

<p>**Subjective: **</p>

<p>•Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Business Professionals of America (Chapter Officer), Math Team (Co-President), School Newspaper (News Editor, Open Forum Editor, and Reporter), National Honor Society, Arya International Dance Academy (Assistant Instructor and Lead Dancer in the IL State Troupe)
•Job/Work Experience: Assistant Dance Instructor (see above)
•Volunteer/Community Service: Labor and Delivery Department of a local hospital, a senior nursing home, the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, and a rural school in India (I taught English to village students. They have school in July and August.)
•Summer Activities: National Student Leadership Conference; Doctor-shadowing an OB/GYN and a Pediatrician
•Essays: I loved my common app essay. I chose to talk about when I’m most content—when I’m dancing and performing. It captured my personality well. For my Why NU? I did not stay under the word limit. I wrote a 642-word essay because I had so much to say. I talked about everything… Academics, ec’s at nu, the student body vibe, the student-professor relationship, traditions, how I belong there because I’ve been going there since I was a kid for all these activities. My passion showed.<br>
•Teacher Recommendations: Honors and AP Chem teacher (didn’t read but probably really good), AP Euro teacher (didn’t read but probably really good), AP Lang teacher and speech coach (really good! Talked about my passion for things I set out to do and dynamics with other students in the classroom as well as my writing ability)
•Counselor Rec: I did not read this. No idea.
•Additional Rec: Team Advisor for NSLC. She’s a current NU junior.
•Interview: I interviewed with a guy in this late twenties who majored in Psych. It went really well, and I don’t think I’d do it differently. I was just anxious because I don’t know how I come off. We didn’t connect as much as I did with my other interviewers but I think he could tell I was a NU-nerd like I like to call myself. </p>

<p>**Other: **</p>

<p>•State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
•Country (if international applicant):
•School Type: Public
•Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)
•Gender: Female
•Income Bracket: 100,000+
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My mom passed away when I was ten years old; my additional information essay was about growing up without her. </p>

<p>**Reflection: **</p>

<p>•Strengths: My high level of demonstrated interest (though I didn’t get to do an overnight visit!), Why NU? essay, grades, extracurriculars.
•Weaknesses: Not many major-specific extracurriculars. I did medicine-related activities but did not win a Chem or Bio or science competition such as SciOly or WYSE or USABO. I did not do summer research at a university, though I did an independent research semester at school. Also, my SAT II scores weren’t great.
•Why do you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: See “Strengths.”
•Where else were you accepted/wait listed/rejected: Waitlisted from WashU (LOL), Rejected from UChicago, Accepted to Vanderbilt as well as two BA/MD programs so far. A plethora of safeties including UMich. Waiting on Harvard, Princeton, and Boston SMED but NU may likely be where you see me in the fall!
•General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: NU has been my dream school for half of my life. I’m elated I got in! The biggest thing was demonstrated interest and having my stats solid. If I understand correctly, NU really cares about academics so if your ECs a little lagging, it’s not the end of the world. **CONGRATS TO THE ACCEPTED CLASS OF 2018! **</p>

<p>I’ve always found these to be really helpful…but I’ll give the warning that I’ve seen many give already…don’t spend too much time on these sites like I did…it only makes you more nervous. Everyone is different and what goes on in the admissions office is shrouded in mystery…Do things you love, be candid in your essays, and you have a high chance of getting in to any college, even the selective ones.</p>

[<em>] Volunteer/Community service: Cancer Support Community, Public Library
[</em>] Summer Activities: BAND CAMP<----that’s pretty much it…
[<em>] Essays: Common App: about my tough transition from shy timid girl to being drum major of the band.
Northwestern Supplemental: I honestly think this is what got me in. The supplemental essay REALLY COUNTS/HELPS especially if you’re like me…pretty average applicant with nothing to make you stand out. My essay was about how Northwestern purple was a perfect blend of red: my passion for science and blue: tranquality and the feel of home on a new campus… sounds cheesy I know, but I’m serious when I say that this might have been the tipping factor in my admission.
[</em>] Teacher Recommendation: AP Chem teacher: I visited him every single study hall when I had AP Chem since class was right after. We pretty much became best friends. AP Latin teacher: She’s known me since 8th grade when I first started Latin to now in AP. I’m hoping my rec was pretty good.

[<em>] Strengths: Ehh not really sure besides my supplemental essay… Plenty of other people had my test scores and GPA or better
[</em>] Weaknesses: nothing glaring…
[<em>] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I HAVE NO IDEA… I FOUND OUT THIS MORNING IN BAND AND FREAKED OUT!!!

Still waiting on JHU, Duke, and Vanderbilt</p>

<p>[/ul]General Comments:
WashU was kinda my dream school, so I was really sad when I found out that I had been waitlisted with like ten thousand other people. I thought that there was no way I would even have a chance at a school like Northwestern especially when I know (from creeping on this site) that SO many other qualified applicants had been rejected. Honestly, I’m still quite baffled and hope that this is not a dream. I really loved Northwestern when I visited and if I decide to go here, I can’t wait to meet you other amazing people!!! To those who were rejected or waitlisted, keep you chin up!! You are all extremely qualified people and will do amazing things regardless of where you end up!!! :)</p>

<p>Same wait listed by WASHU</p>

<p>Decision: Rejected, McCormick</p>

<p>Objective:
•SAT I (breakdown):
•ACT: 33 (36E, 30M, 31R, 34S)
•SAT II: x
•Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.99UW
•Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 8 (unweighted)
•AP (place score in parenthesis): U.S. History (5), Biology (4), World History (5), Chemistry (4), Language and Composition (3).
•IB (place score in parenthesis): x
•Senior Year Course Load: French 5, Concert Choir. Also all AP: Literature, Psychology, Calculus BC, Physics B, Physics C (Mechanics), U.S. Government, and Macroeconomics.
•Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none</p>

<p>Subjective:
•Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
-Theatre; 14 shows through senior year (several leads, student director) [9th - 12th]
-Choir; member of both top ensembles, one co-curricular the other extracurricular. Also sing in church choir once a week. [top choirs 11th - 12th]
-NHS (Officer) [11th - 12th]
-Student Council (Secretary) [10th - 12th]
-Speech team [11th - 12th]</p>

<p>•Job/Work Experience: Part-time job at ice cream shop about 6 hours a week during school year. [10th - 12th]
•Volunteer/Community service:
-Regular volunteer at Animal Humane Society (3 hours a week) [10th - 12th]
-50+ NHS volunteer hours
•Summer Activities: Chosen from top students in my school to participate in an exchange trip to Japan [summer after 11th]. Otherwise just work and theatre. </p>

<p>•Essays:
-NU Supplement; 7/10. Somewhat rushed. Well written, but not sure if I showed quite enough passion or interest. Had a unique NU-related anecdote to use as an opener.
-Common App: 6-10/10? Really not sure if it’s good or not. Too personal to be comfortable letting anyone read. From my own judgement I’d say it’s fairly well written and compelling. </p>

<p>•Teacher Recommendation:
[Didn’t read either]
-Chem teacher: 10/10 (said it was one of the best he’s ever written)
-English teacher: probably 8/10-ish (she says she writes very good recs) </p>

<p>•Counselor Rec: probably 7/10, don’t have a personal relationship. Probably all positive but generic.
•Additional Rec: x
•Interview: x</p>

<p>Other
•State (if domestic applicant): Minnesota
•Country (if international applicant): x
•School Type: I don’t know how to judge competitiveness. I’d say a fairly average high school. Not particularly affluent nor impoverished. Rated in the top 15 of MN high schools if that means anything?
•Ethnicity: White
•Gender: Male
•Income Bracket: 120,000
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none</p>

<p>Reflection
•Strengths: Dedication to ECs, leadership positions, GPA, course rigor.
•Weaknesses: ACT math score, lack of subject tests, AP scores(?), not enough volunteering(?), white male, white male, white male. No major awards or lab/intern work.
•Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably didn’t demonstrate enough interest. I feel like that’s very important to NU and it likely wasn’t obvious enough for them. Also nothing about my app is standout and my test scores are somewhat questionable.
•Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: U of M–Twin Cities, College of Science and Engineering.
Waiting: USC, Stanford</p>

<p>General Comments: Can’t say I didn’t expect this rejection. McCormick is competitive and I’m not particularly noteworthy. Thought it’d be worth a shot to throw in an app, but never had high hopes. Plus the supplement didn’t represent me well at all (hard to incorporate yourself exclusively in a “why school” essay). Fingers crossed this isn’t a bad omen for the rest of my decisions… </p>
