**Decision: Rejected by Stern and CAS **

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2120. 760 Math, 630 Reading, 730 Writing
[] ACT (breakdown): N/A
[] SAT II: Math 2 - 790
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.5): 3.6

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None. Some piano ones in middle school, won something and played at Carnegie Hall in 11th grade.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): President of FBLA, State Assembly Rep. of Junior Statesman of America, Captain of Consumer Bowl team (won something), 2 internships over last summer, lots of piano, lots of violin, a little bit of tennis. In general, I had GREAT ECs.
[] Job/Work Experience: Paid Writer for an online blog/magazine. This is like a “real” job that pays more than enough to support me living in NYC if I dropped out of school.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Boy Scouts for 7 years. Tons of community service through that. Did community service in Costa Rica, Bahamas, West Virginia, locally, etc…
[] Summer Activities: Boy Scout stuff, internships
[] Essays: Very good. All of the people who I showed it to helped me out a LOT at first when they were shabby and it was all in all a 3 month process.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Fantastic recs from 2 teachers who know me very well.
[] Counselor Rec: A little better than generic.
[] Additional Rec: A recommendation from my boss from my internship who is a NYU Professor.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: I put down Yes on the Common App, started filling out a FAFSA, but my family does not qualify for any finaid.
[] Intended Major: Marketing
[] State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public, pretty decent in NJ
[] Ethnicity: Asian American
[] Gender: Male
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, besides a NYU Prof writing me a rec.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I had a very unique essay topic and thought it would fit in perfectly for NYU’s diverse and cultural student body. Also had lots of extra curricular activities going for me.
[] Weaknesses: Below average GPA for NYU CAS
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I expected to get rejected from Stern because my GPA was way below par (Bs and B+s but in all AP courses) and my 2120 SAT wasn’t great either for Stern. However, getting rejected from CAS/LSP (I checked the box that said NYU would put me in another school if I was unfit for Stern) was a major blow, especially since I ED’d and had no other competition from my school. My SAT was above average, and I really thought my ECs, essays, and recommendations would make up for my below average GPA. I really don’t know what happened!
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have been accepted to Fordham and Penn State so far. No other news elsewhere yet.

[/ul]General Comments: Very upset. I cried a lot.

chenathan, wow. Your stats are amazing! I’m sorry you didn’t make it into NYU, but your stats are SO good, like basically what I want to do in my high school years. Good luck getting into other places! x

**Decision: Accepted to CAS **

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): (didn’t send) 2080 710M, 650R, 720W
[] ACT (breakdown): Math: 33 Writing: 33 Science: 34 Reading: 34
[] SAT II: 750 Chemistry, 790 Math II, 690 Biology M
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):3.44
[] Weighted GPA (if available):4.11
[] Rank/percentile (if available): our school doesn’t rank
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Calculus AB (5), AP Biology (4), AP Government and Politics (4), AP Language and Composition (3)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Art History, AP Chemistry, AP Statistics, honors english
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate (President), Biomedical Club (Vice President/Co-Founder), Odyssey of the Mind (Team Member), Interact (Club Member), Math (Club Member), Tennis (Varsity and JV),
[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: volunteering at the #1 top rated cancer center in my area (over 100 hours)
[] Summer Activities:nothing much besides volunteering
[] Essays:My essays, in my belief as well as the people I have given it to, was the best essay that I could have possibly written. I recieved revision help from my cousin who is a recent NYU Stern graduate
[] Teacher Recommendation: 1 was from a math teacher that I had for 3 years ( i assume it was mediocre), and 1 was from an english teacher that I had for 2 years ( i assume that one was the better of the two and overall above average)
[] Counselor Rec: I assume it was alright. I sent a resume and essay describing myself to my counseler so he had more information to write about me.
[] Additional Rec:

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[] Intended Major: Pre-Professional Dentistry
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)
[] Gender: M
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not sure if I had a major hook

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Definetly my essay. Although my gpa was so bad, my standarized testing and course rigor most likely were what pushed my application into the middle pile while my essays probably brought it to the acceptance pile.
[] Weaknesses: My GPA was utter garbage. I really regret stretching myself by doubling up in courses that I really should have just waited for.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My extracurriculars as well as the help i recieved from people that have actually gone to NYU. NYU is my dream school and I’m really happy to have gotten in at all considering the circumstances against me.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted to the Rutgers Honors Program and Fordham. I also applied to UMaryland College Park and UMich, but I haven’t recieved the results for those yet

[/ul]General Comments: Although I wasn’t accepted to the program I had applied for, which was the 7 year dental BA/DDS program, I was accepted to the regular undergraduate pre-professional dental program. Although I thought the decision was bittersweet, it gives me a bit more freedom since my acceptance is non-binding and also because I was going to apply to just the regular undergraduate program in the first place but changed my program choice at the last minute.

ACCEPTED LSP
SAT I (breakdown): did not submit: Reading:680 Math:620 Writing:610
ACT (breakdown): English:31 Math:29 Reading(out of 4.0):

Job/Work Experience: Weekend manual labor job, detailing company, private tutoring (different from program), bagging groceries
Volunteer/Community service: Tutoring Program
Summer Activities:Football, work
Essays: Not sure, was nervous about them. They weren’t stellar but my personal essay was about being a military brat
Teacher Recommendation: AMAZING
Counselor Rec: AMAZING
Additional Rec: Football coach’s was also amazing, he’s not the typical
“jock”.

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major:econ
State (if domestic applicant): NY
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Strengths: Hard to say, because my application wasn’t the strongest. I’d say ACT scores and weighted GPA. Work Experience. Essays. Reccomendations
Weaknesses: Class load was a huge one, but it was explained in my recs that this was out of my control seeing as being a military brat I’ve gone to 5 high schools
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not the typical student
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: University of Alabama

[] Summer Activities: see above
[] Essays: common app was pretty OKish. Lots if edits. Loved my NYU essay though. English teacher helped with edits and suggestions
[] Teacher Recommendation: our school makes us waive the clause. So didn’t read. One was from my English teacher I had for two years. (I guess it was probably nice) the other was from last years stats teacher. (Probably very generic$
[] Counselor Rec: probably the most generic rec ever.
[] Additional Rec: NA

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes. Got an entire $1000!
[] Intended Major: economics and mathematics

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honesty have no idea. Maybe they really liked my NYU essay? Played up the NY angle.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted to Fordham, deferred from Northeastern. Withdrew other apps.

[/ul]Reflection

[ul]

[li] Strengths: Aside from my essays and recs, I think my biggest strength was my portfolio. I put tons of time and effort into every piece, and spent hours revising it all with my counselor. I honestly feel like I submitted my best work and that my personality really shined through it. I was extremely proud of all four pieces.
[/li]

[li] Weaknesses: Lack of community service and ECs. I was rejected from NHS last year because I had a whopping 0 community service hours, and I was afraid that not having any would come back to bite me when applying to a school like NYU.
[/li]

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essays (because even though my supplement was scattered, it was still well written and personal), my recs, and my portfolio
[/li]

[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Fordham and Hofstra
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments:
As I expected, I received very little financial aid. Hofstra gave me $22k/year not including need-based aid; NYU gave me slightly over half that. I have a feeling the (very) large investment will be worth it in the end, though.
