** Official Pomona Class of 2021 Discussion Thread **

@ap012199 Since adding Pomona to my Common Application College list last week, I have received almost 8 mails. :))

@sakibdurlob oh lol. Have you visited?

@ap012199 Nope.

Would it be a bad idea to have my history teacher (who’s also my XC coach) write an optional rec for me on top of my English and environmental science teschers? I emailed my rep about it and he said it’s totally fine but I heard that it waters down your app sometimes.

@ap012199 If it adds a new dimension or perspective - you should. I am submitting a peer rec from my best friend and science project buddy.

If I could add a thing about demonstrated interest, although the CDS says that Pomona doesn’t consider it, I would say it was probably a factor that got me accepted (I went overboard in the demonstrated interest area). the way the admissions work (at LAC’s in particular but idk about other places) is that your regional rep goes through your app first, and they present you to the committee and “fight” for your acceptance. If you can meet your regional rep or at least create a relationship with them so they have an idea of you as a person it’s probably better. Additionally, if you have some demonstrated interest, it only makes it easier for them to advocate for you. Although technically it doesn’t say that they consider demonstrated interest, I would think logically it would make at least a little bit of a difference.

I’m submitting a peer rec as well! I’m lowkey afraid though cos I dont know how Pomona reacts to Peer recs but oh well

How strict is Pomona with the letter of rec deadlines? What if my teacher submits hers a few days after the app deadline?

Also, I send my transcript through Parchment. I said hold for first semester grades before it gets sent to Pomona. Should I just send it now without first semester grades?

Hey guys! I’m super late to join this, but I’m currently working on the “describe a book you couldn’t put down/wikipedia rabbit hole” essay. I’m going with the “wikipedia rabbit hole” one but I can’t figure out a way to start the essay without sounding super cheesy/cliche, or just saying something along the lines of “one day I fell into a figurative wikipedia rabbit hole about ______.” Any suggestions?

@lilgalic

Try putting the reader in your situation (i.e. describe what you see, read, feel…etc)

“A sense of curiosity coerced my cursor over the bright blue, underlined, hyperlinked, font titled, “Non-Locality”. In that moment I fell head-over-heels…”

dowwnnn
the
rabbit
hole

yada yada something that describes your situation

@lilgalic I started mine with a surprising fact about the wikipedia rabbit hole i fell into, and later on just mentioned it like"I have always been interested in this _, but this _(wikipedia rabbit hole topic) really piqued my interest. And then I talked about the topic and related it to bigger ideas and myself. It definitely does not have to explicitly be something you discovered on wikipedia.

How’d you guys respond to the which majors and why essay? Mine is pretty straight forward.

Mine’s pretty straight forward, although it starts with a mini-anecdote-thing

Submitted earlier today!! Hoping that my supplements were good enough…

My thinking might be a little rash, but…

On my application and supplements, I talked about having heavy interests in English and environmental science. I chose to write the second supplement, asking to talk about a subject you couldn’t stop exploring, about creating renderings of sustainable housing for the manned mission to Mars while also writing fictional stories about it. So, in short, my supplement kind of reenforced my interest in the subjects through a single medium that I loved exploring.

My concern is this: since Pitzer is the “environmental” college out of the bunch, will admissions at Pomona think that I’d be a better fit there and push into the reject pile? TBH, after doing research about Pitzer, I wasn’t really interested in the college and ended up not applying (pretty much because the English major wasn’t what I wanted). So am I concerned over nothing, or is it quite possible that Pomona won’t think I’m a good fit because of my heavy interest in environmental science?

@ap012199 The thing is Pomona is /Pomona,/ they don’t look at an application and think “oh, this applicant is better for pitzer, let’s reject them.” they look at an applicant and try to determine if the applicant is fit for pomona.

you’re concerned over nothing

@Faultystart lol thanks. I wonder what constitutes “fit” at Pomona. I know academic capability is a factor as is being personable, but what else?

@ap012199 based on the website’s description, pomona looks for academically strong student who want to do something meaningful. the website says the location appeals to daring minds and adventurous spirits. it also says they “welcome applications from students who want to join a collaborative and creative community.”

@Faultystart cool. Thanks for the info!
