**Official Pomona ED II Class of 2021 Discussion Thread**

We are in this together! Good luck to everyone, and if you so desire to communicate with other 2021 ED II applicants, please do so here so that future applicants may be able to benefit from the information :)>-

ayyye just applied for ed2 as well. I do have a question does anyone know how the financial aid will be even if our efc is 0?

I have an on campus interview this Saturday… super excited!!

@Fawziyah they try to meet full demonstrated need. Pomona is pretty good about financial aid.

Good luck! I have an off campus interview (on my own school campus) this coming week  @ap012199

I will officially be a part of Pomona’s class of 2021!!

@greenerthoughts WOW CONGRATULATIONS! you must be thrilled, I’m so happy for you!!! you applied through questbridge right?

Congrats!! It all payed off  @greenerthoughts

Yep, through QB. I accidentally put it on the wrong thread, oops. Thank you though!!! Best of luck to you guys!!!

Just had my interview, it went great! It was super laid back, and my interviewer was nice.

lucky!! I requested an interview with an alumni (cos I live too far from Pomona ) on Dec 2 but I haven’t heard back yet

My D is applying ED-II in spite of having the worst on-campus interview in history. The astonishing thing is, the interview was conducted by an admissions officer. We drove six hours just for this interview (second visit to Pomona). For reasons completely unknown to us, the interviewer never smiled, never introduced herself by name, was almost reluctant to shake my hand, and did not ask any questions about my D’s background except for the nature of the school program she was in during high school. In fact, she basically spent 30 minutes fixated on trying to figure out how the high school program worked. My D never got a chance to say anything about herself as a person, her academic interests, her activities, why Pomona, etc. And the interviewer didn’t seem to care about anything. She also did not or could not answer any questions about Pomona. We have never seen anything like this, and my D has interviewed with numerous liberal arts colleges on both coasts and the Midwest. I just hope she doesn’t write a cruel interview report based on NOTHING, since that is exactly what came out of the interview. Absolutely nothing. Big waste of time. Luckily, this interviewer is not the admissions officer assigned to our region. A separate meeting with the officer who IS assigned to this area changed everything. He took the time to speak to my D separately and answer all her questions. This made her feel much better. In fact, every other admissions staff member in the office and in Financial Aid was extremely friendly and welcoming. Otherwise, my D might have changed her mind about Pomona and left the campus heartbroken. We have a theory about why this particular interviewer/ admissions officer took issue with my D, but I won’t publicly speculate. In any case, it goes to show that you shouldn’t judge a college based on your experience with one obnoxious gatekeeper. My D loves everything else about the college. Don’t lose sight of the bigger picture! Good luck, everyone!

@BobShaw Sorry to hear that your daughter had that bad experience. I had a bad experience with a woman who was working at MIT, but a great experience with another staff member at MIT. We just have to remember that one bad nut is not indicative of the whole school.

Exactly, which is why she is still applying ED. If only the admissions office knew how poorly this person is representing the institution. Oh well.

When my D and I visited the Pomona campus, she fell in love with the college and was ready to apply ED. My familiy has a long history with the 5C’s including Pomona. I didn’t want to push it on her but she was smitten. BUT we had two off putting interactions/interviews with the admissions office and I was really taken aback. When I read your post, I had to echo your comments. The lack of interest by the admissions person was so stunning that we walked away in disbelief.

@BobShaw @21admitcand I’m so sorry to hear this happened! I would encourage you to use a throw-away email (or one that can’t identify you/your child) and email Seth Allen directly to report this. These incidents are not at all appropriate and the admission officers should hear about this in their next meeting.

His email is here: https://www.pomona.edu/directory/people/seth-allen

Hey guys!!! I’m definitely applying to Pomona, but I’m torn between applying EDII or RD. I had the best on-campus interview a couple weeks ago and I just walked around the campus afterwards because I didn’t want to leave haha. Pomona is definitely my top choice but Brown is right up there too (I applied ED and was deferred). I am curious to see whether or not I’ll get into Brown, but I also love Pomona and I know applying ED shows interest. What should I do??

@ap012199 We had this debate over and over, so I know what you’re going through. Some suggestions:

  • Make sure financial aid is not going to be an issue. Run the Net Price Calculator and, with the understanding that this won’t be an exact figure or guarantee, determine your parents’ comfort level with how much $$$$ they will need to pay (and whether it’s worth it to you).
  • If you apply ED-II and get into Pomona, will you happily accept? If you think you’ll have even an ounce of regret or doubt, don’t do it. Apply everywhere RD and see how things work out.

Yes, it is true that the RD odds work against you. C’est la vie. Better that than to be forced into something you are not 100% satisfied with, or be haunted by “what if” questions in your mind for the rest of your life. At least you’ll know that the schools that admit you RD really, REALLY want you and think you’ll be a good addition to their academic and social community.

@ap012199 I have the same problem! Applied early to Stanford and was rejected, but Brown, Harvard, and Yale are my top choices. Pomona is next. I know that if I apply ED II to Pomona and get in that I’ll always think “what if,” but I would be devastated if I applied to Pomona RD and was rejected as well as rejected from my top choices (which is a very high probability). I absolutely love Pomona but I don’t think I would go there over Brown or Harvard. It’s all a game of chance and I just don’t know what to do.
