[] Why you think you were deferred: My essays were probably commonplace and didn’t stand out in the eyes of the admissions officers. Perhaps I will be given a chance regular decision. General Comments: Work hard on your essays! It isn’t enough to have everything else! For top schools like princeton, you need to be the best of the best and that is validated through your essays! Try your hardest to make your essays unique, personal, and memorable. Congratulations to everyone who got in! I’m sure you all deserved it greatly! As for me, I need to go work on the applications I have left for Regular Decision!

[] ACT: Nope

[] Senior Year Course Load: applied after graduation during gap year; N/A
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): I emphasized my international travel and volunteer work, and while I didn’t hold a leadership position in the traditional sense during those events, I was able to demonstrate their collective effect on my leadership abilities. Other ECs: musician and producer, intramural sports at local grad. school, homeschool honor society (hehe. we have those too.)
[] Job/Work Experience: ran guitar studio with double-digit student count, camp counselor at HandiCamp (focused on serving disabled teens and adults), babysitting (very common teenage experience), director’s assistant for local youth choir
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer worker in Germany from August 2012-2013 (ongoing during time of application—applied from Germany), various and sundry local volunteer positions, church musician and youth leader
[] Summer Activities: lots of travel in Europe, HandiCamp job, concentrated music production and collaboration efforts, Ancient Greek summer course, fundraising for gap year (after senior year of HS)
[] Essays: strong and eager writer; good hooks and reflections (ie great content) multiple edits to shore up solid drafts
[] Teacher Recommendation: never saw them, but I had great relationships with the teachers in question—one was a Princeton prof. with whom I studied.
[] Counselor Rec: as a homeschooler, my father was my counselor, so I’m sure Princeton took that bias into consideration. other than that, it was great.
[] Additional Rec: had another Princeton prof. from another course I took write me a rec.
[] Interview: very nice hour-long talk with a Pton grad, now with the Foreign Service, over gourmet crepes in a Berlin cafe. honestly, it was more of a conversation, but a conversation in which I gave a very good picture of my academic interests and desire to study at Princeton. she also treated me to my crepe. very kind.

[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: <100k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): no traditional hooks. maybe being homeschooled…?
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: grades, test scores, essays, recs—all in all, I was able to provide a great picture of me, both as a student and as a teenager in love with life.
[] Weaknesses: ECs—non-traditional schooling meant I had to be quite resourceful, and by showing that, I think I kept my ECs from being much of a weakness.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: solid application bolstered by the fact that I was taking a gap year. I think the concept of taking a year to mature and gain pracitcal experience appeals to a lot of University people.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rutgers (New Brunswick Campus)—accepted

[/ul]General Comments: My parents didn’t groom me to be an Ivy Leaguer, nor did I obsessively pursue admission to Princeton as an end goal. Instead, my parents and I put together a curriculum that would advance me as a student and human being—an end goal that will follow me through my Princeton years. I’m thrilled Princeton has recognized the value and results of my secondary schooling. Excited to be a Tiger!

[] Summer Activities: This past summer I 1) worked 30 hours a week at my local library 2) independently prepared for the SAT 3) enrolled in an online Sociology course through Princeton University 4) participated in my high school’s performing arts summer program (3 hours a day, 5 days a week, 3 weeks) 5) performed in a community theater production 6) worked on the Common App and 7) vacationed in Maine and Rhode Island.
[] Essays: I thought they were very strong! My first was about how my mom’s numerous hospitalizations in my seventh, eighth, and ninth grade years influenced me. My supplement was about my struggles with anxiety and the changes I have made to my lifestyle (all written without making myself look like a mental health case). I had a great faculty adviser and I poured as much of myself as I could into these essays.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I had the privilege of seeing both and they were absolutely glowing! One was written by my AP US History teacher who wrote extensively on the work I put into my research paper about African American minstrels in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The other was written by my Honors Pre-Calculus teacher who said I was in the “top 5% of students she actually remembers” and told colleges not to “let this one get away.” I’m definitely not trying to brag, but I was completely blown away when I read the two letters.
[] Counselor Rec: This was the only letter I was unable to see but we have a pretty good relationship, though I’m sure his letter was a bit more generic than my two teachers’ letters.
[] Additional Rec: I asked my supervisor at work to write me a letter and his was glowing as well. He detailed my responsibilities and my positive attitude when confronting challenges!
[] Interview: I had a fantastic interview! We went to a nearby Starbucks and talked for about an hour and a half. It honestly felt like a normal conversation and she was thrilled to find out that I had been accepted, offering in her email to “celebrate with me in any way.”

[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Waiting to hear back from Muhlenberg College and The College of New Jersey, but I already accepted Princeton’s offer![/li][/ul]
General Comments: Princeton has been my dream school since I was 5 and I still can’t believe that I’ve been given the opportunity to attend! I can’t wait to be a member of one of the nation’s most prestigious universities and meet those who have also been accepted. Go Tigers!

[] Job/Work Experience: 2010 Assistant manager at salon.
[] Volunteer/Community service:A lot of personal projects and random volunteer work. One of my passions, clearly stated in essays. Involved in church, food projects, shelters. Directing my own video to show to administration. near 300 hours.
[] Summer Activities: OMSI internship… created a demo on renewable energy. Director said it was the best one she has seen in 12 years.
[] Essays: Common app was on my rough childhood, unstable home, drugs, alcohol, moving from NJ to OR and how I overcame that by channeling my anger to helping others and school work. I thought it was very strong and showed my strength of character. My princeton supp was on how my culture gave me a sense of self and character and how I want to change lives… kinda vague when I look at it now. I found a minor error after I submitted it.
[] Teacher Recommendation:Awesome! One was from a multicultural counselor and she basically said I was genuinely amazing and basically how i changed from freshman year to senior year.
[] Counselor Rec:Generic. I was persistent when it came to college apps and I think she noticed that.
[] Additional Rec:none
[] Interview:It went well. I asked a lot of questions and she was impressed by the variety of projects I am involved in.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:My essay, personality, grades were okay, passion for volunteering and helping others
[] Weaknesses:Test scores, leadership
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I honestly have no idea. Test scores were really bad. I couldn’t find time to study for them and I am not a good test taker. I knew that I could definitely score higher, but didn’t have time to study. IB keeps you busy. I just trust in God and that has helped me cope with this.

[] Summer Activities: Mainly travel. Visited Bahamas and Aruba last year, Chicago/Cleveland and Spain this year. Attended intensive golf camp both years, GW Foreign Policy Course this year)
[] Essays: Common App Essay - meh prob like a 8/10. Writing isn’t my strong suit. Wrote about time I broke my nose and stay in hospital talking to a college student Supplement - I wrote about the econ teacher I idolize. Might have been a little impersonal (focused a little too much on him as opposed to me) prob like a 8/10 too.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One from Calc teacher, directed plays I was on stage crew for, almost certainly a great rec. Second from Econ/Euro teacher, sponsors like 1/3 of the clubs I’m in, definitely a stellar rec.
[] Counselor Rec: Barely knew counselor til this year because counselor assignments were moved around last year, but became relatively close this year, and was prob a great rec. She even wrote a separate rec for Princeton to emphasize my desire to go there.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: Went fine, made the interviewer laugh, had fun at Starbucks. Didn’t go as well as I would’ve liked, but definitely didn’t hurt the app.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, ECs, Recs, Legacy
[] Weaknesses: Essays, Awards, Could’ve had 4.0 UW if I tried harder in AP Lang (my only B), Could’ve had better SATs and World History Subject Test definitely could’ve been better
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Princeton’s a crapshoot. Still hopeful, but coping with the reality that it’s probably a rejection letter. Essays could’ve been better but Princeton was the first app I had to do and I wasn’t quite sure how to start this “college application” ordeal. Essays def got better as I wrote more.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Haven’t gotten any letters back yet, but UMCP (safety - almost certainly in), UVA (relatively certain I’ll get in - my essays were much better on this app); Columbia, UPenn - Wharton, Harvard, Duke, Georgetown, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins all on the list too[/li][/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Common App Essay, GPA, SAT(?)
[] Weaknesses: No excellent extracurriculars, nothing to rly make me stand out
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Good essay, applied to engineering. I was very honest in my application. No I did not win a nobel prize or take an internship under the U.S. President, so I pretty much just talked about what I liked and what I learned from it. If you have nothing to hype about, don’t. My advice: keep your grades up, do what you love, pray you get in, don’t sound conceited, and leave the rest to chance
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Didn’t bother sending in any other apps [/li][/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Strong test scores, awesome activities and really balanced and worldly background
[] Weaknesses: Not-so-stellar grades, one really boring essay.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Mix of backgrounds and experiences that makes me different from almost everybody. Healthily balanced and bringing unique perspective I guess. At least that’s what I tried to communicate.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to UMichigan. Didn’t have to apply anywhere else
[/ul]
General Comments: I got lucky. Ignore the snobs who think they deserved their admission. Anyone admitted is fortunate. Too many qualified kids means that not everyone gets what they want. There are lots of incredible universities. You’ll get into one. Getting deferred/rejected/admitted doesn’t reflect on you as a person. Good luck!

was anyone that was deferred accepted later?
