There's no need to try to bring APDoolittle down, he got into Princeton.

Congrats APdoo from a fellow Lawng Islander:)

Thanks exigent :) I'm glad there are still thoughtful people on this thread! I actually haven't read all the pages... did you get in? I'm sorry if I shouldn't be asking.... I just figured we could be open about it. In any case, good luck to you, and thanks for sticking up for me! :)

Anyone know what happened to Nick Zhao?

Thanks nopoisonivy! Haha, it's great to see comments from fellow LIers! Ahh... I'm going to go through the pages of this thread b/c I feel bad asking you or anyone about whether or not they were accepted. Feel free to save me the trouble, lol. Either way, I'll go back to check anyway. That way I'll have an idea of who else got in. Thanks for the compliments everyone! Congrats to all :)

I'm so sorry to hear about it, Zelda, and I wish you the very best. Creative writing is a difficult road, you must admit, but I believe that the very driven can be successful. There are so many opportunities for writers today, and so many roads to success. Don't give up the dream. :)

Ok, I'm in a difficult situation (though one that my friends at school call a "good dillemma" to be in). Right now, I'm having trouble w/ my list of top schools. Princeton is definitely at the top of my list... but Dartmouth is a close 2nd. Here's what my list looks like so far:

1) Princeton
2) Dartmouth
3) Williams
4) Cornell
5) Amherst

What do you guys think? Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!

-Jon

And yes, I do plan to visit the schools. Unfortunately, Dmouth and Pton's open-houses overlap (as far as the dates) so I'm going to contact both to see if other arrangements/accomodations may be made. Otherwise I'll only be able to go to one of the two Open-Houses (which would stink)! I'm also comparing financial aid offers. I only have Pton's so far (which is phenomenal - almost a full ride). I'm still waiting on other schools' financial aid offers. If you have any tips or are in a similar situation, I'd appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Princeton all the way. I have one of those "good dillemmas" as well. which will I choose...Princeton or Yale? So far Yale has partrayed itself as a much warmer and outreaching university (for now:)) ...free shirt, free school flag...:)

Definitely Princeton! I figure, Yale and Dartmouth can make for nice grad schools, but Princeton's best as an undergrad institution. So go to Princeton first, and go to the other ones later. :)

Princeton has the best finaid... Dartmouth is a great place for undergrad but Hanover is very cold and very isolated. Also, Princeton has better colors and a better mascot. :)

As for Yale, I'm all for diversity but would rather not have an unrepentant ex-Taliban guy as a classmate. http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110008179
http://www.yaledailynews.com/article.asp?AID=32110

I wonder if Camilla Belle got in...?

Anyway, congrats to everyone!

QuizQuick - Nick Zhao appears on many of the UC Berkeley threads and probably the Chicago ones too. He said he is "vaccinating" between Cal and Chicago (he probably means vacillating).

BTW, anyone know whatever happened to welwelwel? He was the first to post during the ED round.

apfreak, I HEAVILY disagree. My Yale rep never ANSWERED any E-Mails from me, and neither from my friends.

Yale definitely is much more "clubbier"

Also, Yale's priorities are messed up... There have been opinion letters written by Yale professors in the WSJ and they say that he is not on a degree program, but just taking classes

But, many Yalies are very angry

vaccinating? weird word choice.... maybe he meant vacillating

ucmomma, vaccinating LOL.

Yep, that's what he wrote "vaccinating". HehHeh LOL

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Keep 'em coming, please!!

Btw, APFreak, you got a free shirt and school flag from Yale? Haha, very cool! I can't wait to visit Princeton! I am definitely buying some Princeton apparel when I go there! Haha, idk about a flag, but I'd love to get a sweatshirt and maybe a bumper sticker!

Yeah, I've heard about the climate up in Hanover. I'm definitely not "cool" w/ that at all! ;) I think I would love Princeton! I already live in the suburbs here in Long Island, so I should be able to get used to the area. While Princeton is my favorite so far, I'm DEFINITELY waiting for all my other schools' financial aid offers. I HIGHLY DOUBT any school (even Dartmouth) could possibly beat Princeton's AMAZING offer, but since I have until May 1st, I may as well wait. Who knows? Maybe between now and then, something might change my mind (like fellow CCers)? Haha....

So please, if you have any more opinions, please let me know! Thanks ;)

Essays: Good... tried to highlight the fact that I had studied overseas for 3 years and had adjusted well to a new culture. Also emphasised how much I like to take risks.
Teacher Recs: Way too nice. Two who went to Yale and I still didn't get in.
Counselor Rec: Amazing. Former college counselor at Taft who moved to Australia for a more relaxed life.
Hook (if any): Graduated from australian high school.
Applied early? To Stanford and got shafted.
Location/Person:
State or Country: Australia... now Washington State.
School Type: Private highly selective.
Ethnicity: White... sadly
Gender: Male
Other Factors: First person from my school to be accepted... Useful to be an American citizen but have the foreign appeal.
General Comments: I got denied from Stanford early mainly I think because they didn't have my state rank and they didn't have my better SAT II scores. I've slowly moved on though I would've loved to go there. I can't complain by any means about Princeton. Two guys from my school are going to Yale EA so I like to think they were tired of us guys (it was an all boys school). Plus Princeton held true to its rep and gave me killer financial aid. Happy and excited to be a Tiger.

[] Essays: astronomy, my mom, and moving (we're military). I spent many hours non-stop making them my very best. Everyone I had read them said they were excellent and really showed who I am.

My physics teacher told me that she definitely wanted to write a rec for me, so I assume that one was awesome as well. I also had my journalism teacher write one, and she likes me too.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor really likes me, and I have a good relationship with her, so I assume it was amazing, glowing

[li] Applied early? No. I really wanted to, but since I wanted to apply for aid (and wasn't sure how much I would get) I didn't want to apply early, be admitted and by some chance have to turn it down for financial reasons. I have too much respect for the university to do something like that and to take an ED spot when someone else could have had it.
[/li]

Ever since I can remember I've wanted to go to Princeton. My dad enjoyed his time there, and I knew the school would have been a good fit.
Well, in general, the resources of Princeton are without comparison, especially the undergraduate resources. The kind of people you'll meet, the kid of faculty that will teach you, and the sort of overall experience you will have at Princeton will shape you for much of your life to come. Princeton is, in my mind, the ultimate undergraduate experience.

For the career oriented, Princeton's prestige and strength of student body and programs is likely to land you a good first job. The top finance companies, consulting companies, technology companies, and much more recruit heavily at Princeton. Furthermore, the Princeton alumni network is very intense and supremely loyal to the school (even compared to peer institutions like HYS). If you're looking towards grad school, Princeton students' top grad school destinations are Harvard, Columbia, Stanford, and Yale, in order of most students sent to least.

You seem to be interested in/strong with computer science and math. For math, Princeton is without comparison. For computer science, both Princeton and CMU are strong destinations. Although CMU's CS department is probably more well known, Princeton's got an extremely impressive and highly-ranked CS department as well, and in combination with the overall education and student body that Princeton has to offer, it might be the place for you.

Although I've outlined why I believe your experience at Princeton may be academically superior to UCSD or CMU, the final decision is yours to make. Visit all three schools and see which one you feel most "at home" with. Turning down a free-ride to UCSD is hard, but I'm sure other matriculants have - and will - make a similar decision for the sake of their overall education and because they believe that the cost of a Princeton education can be made up later in life.

You've got a great set of choices, and I wish you the best of luck!
