• Dance/Drill Team (Co-captain)
  • Figure skating, competitions, shows and such
  • Red Cross Club (founder, president)
  • Girls Achieving in Non-Traditional Subjects (president)
  • Key Club (VP)
  • Operation Freedom Paws Club (founder, VP)
  • Medical Explorers Post 751 (president)
  • School orchestra (1st chair)
  • School choir, piano accompanist
  • California Scholarship Federation
    Job/Work Experience:
  • Figure skating instructor at my local ice rink
    Volunteer/Community service:
  • El Camino Hospital information desk manager
  • EC Hosp Healing arts program pianist
  • Instructor for first aid and CPR at the local Red Cross chapter
  • Tutoring my old piano teacher’s students at her studio in keyboard music theory
    Summer Activities:
  • Stanford EXPLORE Lecture Series
Essays: I thought they were average and could be improved on alot.
  • The Common App I wrote about when I was 6 I had to be taken to China because of my family situation. Despite having to learn Mandarin from scratch, by the end of the year I had gotten myself caught up and placed 1st in my class. Then having to move back to the US after forgetting English and placed in an ESL class made me feel the same way as when I had to be taken to China. But at the end I still managed to come out on top.
  • The supplement essay I wrote about my philosophy derived from the novel Siddhartha. I connected the philosophy of letting go to when my mother had to go back to China to receive cancer treatment and one of my major skating competitions.
    Teacher Recommendation:
  • My bio teacher was definitely touched by my essays and family situation, so I think her letter may be good. Not sure about the other one.
    Counselor Rec:
  • Not sure, my counselor does know me very well though.
    Additional Rec:
    Interview:
  • I thought it went great! My interviewer was actually 10 minutes late. Some of the college and Princeton advice she gave me kind of sounded like she was dissuading me to go to Princeton. At the end my interviewer said something like “gotta go write you a good report now!” But I don’t know. I felt mixed signals from her.

Other

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection
I was honestly shocked that I didn’t get straight up rejected. I thought my scores were definitely not worthy of even being deferred. So I’m glad and thankful to be given another chance.

Strengths: Extracurriculars, GPA
Weaknesses: SAT, essays
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably because the other components of my application pardoned my low SAT.

General Comments:
HAVE HOPE EVERYONE WHO WAS DEFERRED!! :D

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
[] SAT I (breakdown): superscore: 2290 (770M 790CR 730W 10e)
[] ACT: 35 single sitting- (36E 34R 35M 34S 10 essay)
[] SAT II: 800 Physics 780 Math 1
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.96 not counting this year (1 B in 7th grade algebra 1)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 13/748
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Human Geography (5) European History (5) Calculus AB (5) Literature (4) Physics B (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): SL Psychology (6) SL Physics (7)
[] Senior Year Course Load: IB HL Math (stat option), AP Physics C mechanics and electromagnetism, IB HL contemporary History, IB SL French B, IB HL English A1, Orchestra, IB Theory of Knowledge.
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with distinction, a Winning team for the ISTF (internet science and technology fair) (That isn’t that major though). Some chess stuff if that counts, below.[/li]
[ b]Subjective:**

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): My chess club, 4 years (president/captain 3 years, I basically single handed-ly built the team, got us to compete at the k-12 national championship last year and we got 4th place team for 11th grade, I tied for 3rd individual. Lots of other chess tournament wins.) Another local High school’s chess club I go to after school Fridays- they consistently rank near the top nationally too. Quiz bowl (co-captain 1 year, we did well in county-wise competition last year), Meeting of the Minds (a place for community service, political, and most commonly, philosphical discussion, president 1 year), The local Library’s TAB (Teen Advisory Board) community service stuff etc.- (treasurer 2 years), I also have played ultimate frisbee and table tennis when the school clubs had sponsors. Also violin and piano with a bunch of violin “superior” rating individually, as ensembles, and as a full orchestra at state MPA. A bunch of honor societies and clubs that meet more rarely, but didn’t put most of those on Commonapp.
[] Job/Work Experience: Nil.
[] Volunteer/Community service: See TAB, and some other occasional things, Relay for Life last year.
[] Summer Activities: Not much, one summer half of my house’s roof collapsed in, and the next my mother needed to have surgery, so I didn’t do much. (Although I did watch a lot of Coursera videos and taught myself to type correctly, now at 107+wpm haha.)
[] Essays: Commonapp: 9/10 I wrote about the content environment and wrote about chess tournament rooms. Gonna be honest, it was an essay I was proud of, and I’m a pretty decent writer.
Supplement- 9/10 I wrote about a quote from Foer’s extremely loud and incredibly close- “Sometimes I can hear by bones straining under the weight of all the lives I’m not living.” and wrote about trying to join a billion clubs but realizing that I couldn’t be really *great at anything because they all took time, so I focused on chess competitive and music for fun, and it worked.
[] Teacher Recommendation:
IB English and TOK teacher- 9/10- she really likes me even though I ask a lot of questions and stuff, I think she wrote me a really good rec.
AP Calculus AB and IB HL Math teacher- 7/10 (maybe 8/10)- Similar to above, but I don’t think he’s as good of a writer. I really like math though (like after the AP exam last year I wanted him to teach me stuff stuff for Calc BC and HL Math, and I’m one of only a few people doing their EE on math, and I’m probably in the top three math students in the grade.) Possibly a little generic.
[] Counselor Rec: 10/10- I normally wouldn’t put the max score, but she’s new, and we met lots of times, she was super supportive, had me meet with a friend of hers who’s a successful engineer, and we’ve talked a lot, and some of my teachers actually told me that she’s ranted to them about how impressive I am, so I think I got a very good rec from her.
[] Additional Rec: I didn’t know I could submit one! There wasn’t a spot that I saw on Commonapp, and I didn’t know I could mail stuff to them, oh well.
[] Interview: Went very well, he was really nice. I had some decent questions, he talked about Princeton’s emphasis on undergraduate education and we talked a little about the eventual proof of Fermat’s last theorem and stuff. I talked about my chess stuff and he said his daughter was just learning it and when I left he said he hopes I get in. maybe 7.5/10?
Other

[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, about 88% or so covered, which is a godsend. I was worried about the cost, but it looks like I should get to go!
[] Intended Major: Physics, Mathematics (pure?), or engineering physics maybe? I don’t want to do anything war related, and so maybe not engineering, I don’t know.
[] State (if domestic applicant): Florida
[] Country (if international applicant): n/a
[] School Type: Public, IB magnet program, ~750 kids per grade, about 100 IB kids per grade.
[] Ethnicity (Hispanic Y/N/not reported): N
[] Race(s) (AI/AN, Asian, AA, NH/PI, White, not reported): White
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: ~100,000 until some months ago,my dad was working part time for awhile and it was significantly lower. Don’t know if it will change. 3 younger siblings.
[] Hooks/tips (URM, athlete, legacy, 1st gen, etc.): Nope.
Reflection

[] Strengths: Essays definitely, maybe recs (although I’m sure most applicants have very good ones) ACT maybe? I mean it isn’t really a strength in this pool I guess. Chess probably? Maybe ISTF? Well rounded?
[] Weaknesses: Single score SAT (2190)? not 4.0 GPA. Class rank not in top 1% No hooks, not internationally recognized at anything. Not first in chess stuff. 4 on AP lit. 770 on math SAT both times, 780 math 1.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:[/li]Probably my Essays. I spent time on them, really tried to make my personality come through.
Just a tip- My friends said I should brag more in them and try to show off my chess stuff more in the chess essay, but I didn’t mention anything about awards and leadership stuff there (although I did mention it somewhere else on the application.) I just tried to talk about how it affected me and the personal significance it had to me.
I know I’m not unqualified, but I’m definitely not a super-applicant. Do what you can and get lucky, and hopefully you can get in. Try to win something at a national level.
General Comments:
It’s still so surreal, I was really expecting a deferral because some of my very qualified friends didn’t get into schools this year and I don’t know of anyone from my school every getting into Princeton that wasn’t a recruited athlete (we had someone from Crew get in last year and someone into Yale this year, since our team does really well nationally). I’m still very shocked. Anyways, this should save me a lot of applications that I would have spent Winter Break doing! This is a fantastic day. Good luck to everyone else who applies or has applied, I hope I get to meet some of you fantastic people the upcoming year. These threads were entertaining and helpful in making it through the wait, and good luck to anyone deferred.
Class of '19, go tigers!

**Decision: Deferred **

Hopefully this helps someone!

Objective

SAT I (breakdown): 2390 (790 CR, 800 WR, 800 M)
ACT (breakdown): Did not take
SAT II: 750 Math II, 760 Chemistry, 760 US History, 770 Chinese w/Listening
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.93
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Chemistry: 5, AP US History: 5, AP English Language and Comp: 5, AP Psychology: 5, AP Human Geography: 5, AP Chinese: 5, AP Comparative Government: 4, AP Statistics: 4
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP English Literature, AP Macroeconomics, AP US Government, Japanese
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National AP Scholar, National Merit Semi-Finalist, published a paper on Japanese Tokugawa foreign relations during the 17th-19th centuries (I sent in the first page of the journal article as a supplement) in a Stanford Institute of International Studies journal, Chinese-American Semiconductor Professionals Association Scholarship (not that major), various awards from the World Affairs Council for my passion for international relations, a bunch of awards from flute competitions

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

Director of Foreign Relations for the UN International Youth Council (currently in the midst of creating a youth-run policy journal), Youth Ambassador to Finland (1 of 12 students to receive a scholarship from the Finnish govt), Stanford Reischauer Japanese and Sejong Korean Scholar (competitive program, only 25 students nationally get in), Board Member of the Silicon Valley United Nations Association (10-12), Student Ambassador for local World Affairs Council (10-12), Principal Flutist of a state-level youth symphony and school Wind Ensemble (sent in a flute supplement) (9-12), Undersecretary general for Model UN (9-12), Director of finances for National Honor Society (10-12), Founded my own financial literacy initiative after interning at a microfinance NGO in China (10-12), Business editor for award-winning school newsmagazine (10-12)

Job/Work Experience: Interning at a microfinance NGO? That was only for a summer though.

Volunteer/Community service: Many hours through the UN Association

Summer Activities: 2013 summer was spent touring Central Europe with my youth symphony for 2-3 weeks, Interned at a Microfinance NGO in Central China, 2014 summer: Received a scholarship from the Finnish government to study abroad 7-8 weeks

Essays: (copy and pasted from the other thread)
My Common App was no more than a 8.5/10, about my experiences as a student diplomat in Finland- I talked about a Finnish word that could not be translated into English and how eventually understanding the word helped me understand the Finnish spirit
Princeton Supplement was a 7.5/10, about the importance of listening to people’s stories. When I interned at a microfinance NGO in China two summers ago, I was put in the position of distributing microfinance loans to villagers in Central China and deciding who should receive what by conducting multiple interviews and listening to their life stories. I chose the quote response prompt, and I admit it was kind of cheesy.

Teacher Recommendation: Stellar! From my APUSH and AP English Language teachers. I was a heavy participant in both these classes and they loved me.

Counselor Rec: Should have been pretty good; I visit my counselor a lot and she understands my ambitions

Additional Rec: Did not send. But I did send in a flute supplement, through the Princeton Arts Supplement portal.

Interview: Amazing- interviewer is a prominent alumnus (donates a lot, volunteers a lot, dad is a professor of ORFE) and his interests aligned directly with mine, told me he would write a “glowing” recommendation but I guess it didn’t count for much.

Reflection

Strengths: SAT I score, unique passions and extracurriculars, not a cookie-cutter Asian
Weaknesses: GPA, SAT II scores, bad at math
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: It’s a crapshoot! I just wasn’t lucky enough :frowning:
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I’ll apply to a bunch of other privates.

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended, AP Scholar w/ Distinction, National Latin Exam Gold (Both times taken), Greek Exam High Honors <- The Latin/Greek awards certainly aren’t too major, but Classics was a major part of my application

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

Latin Club (founding member) - 3 years
Theatre (Acted in 6 plays, Directing Fall Play this year) - 4 years

Teacher Recommendation: One from my Latin teacher who LOVED me, another from my physics teacher…my school does not let me see them
Counselor Rec: She loves me, probably incredible especially since I go to a tiny school (again, I couldn’t see)
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: Went 45 minutes over, he seemed to love me…an interesting note: after the fact, he told me that one of the best things I did was show why I did not want to go to Stanford (I suppose this would be Yale or Harvard if you’re from CT or MA) because apparently many CA applicants often have Stanford envy. Not sure if that’s something that all interviewers look for though.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Classics
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Tiny Private School
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Sibling Legacy? That definitely helped in the interview because I know a ton about Princeton from visiting my sister, Intended major in a very niche academic field

Reflection

Strengths: Strong interest in Classics, Lots of different kinds of EC’s
Weaknesses: Outside of Classics nothing really differentiates me too much as an applicant
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: LUCK. 100%. I’m not nearly so foolish as to think that I deserved this over all the other qualified applicants. The Classics angle just happened to have played well for me as I assume did the sibling legacy.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Already submitted 5 UC’s’ (Cal, LA, SD, SB, Davis), CMC, and Oxford
Also applying to Yale, Harvard, Stanford, and Duke (not holding my breath though)

General Comments:
I feel so blessed right now. Princeton has been my dream for years and it has not really hit me how significant this is yet. To all those deferred - it’s really just a crapshoot. I realize that is easy for me to say, but anyone who is qualified will do just as well in life as the people who got in. TIGERS 2019!!!

Summer Activities:
(1) Summer research programs at three universities in bioengineering, biochemistry, and astrophysics, respectively.
(2) Online courses through MIT OpenCourseWare and Art of Problem Solving.
Essays:
(1) Common App - 9/10 - Showed my passion for a random and interesting hobby I have.
(2) Princeton Supplement - 8/10 - Talked about organizing a Student Council event alongside the current president.
(3) Princeton Engineering - 5/10 - I honestly thought it was pretty good when I submitted it, but then the next day I found several horrible grammatical errors and an egregious factually incorrect scientific statement… Nevertheless, I think I did effectively articulate why I like engineering and specifically Princeton Engineering.
Teacher Recommendation:
(1) 8/10. From my physics teacher who I had both sophomore and junior year. He’s well-known for writing good letters.
(2) 7/10. From my Spanish teacher who I also had both sophomore and junior year. She wrote it kind of last minute though.
Counselor Rec:
5/10. I’d say it was pretty average since I don’t really know her that well and she wrote it based on my resume…
Additional Rec:
9/10. From a professor I worked under as part of a summer research program. He promised he’d write a great one, so hopefully that’s what it was!
Interview:
7/10. I think I demonstrated my interest in Princeton very well and came across as an interesting person maybe?? He was REALLY nice and said I had a great chance of getting in, so there’s that.

**Other **

Applied for Financial Aid?: Not after seeing the Net Price Calculator…
Intended Major: Chemical & Biological Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): Texas
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: about $165,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Ummm underrepresented area? I don’t think that really counts though…

**Reflection **

Strengths: SAT and AP scores, wide range of ECs, Common App & Supplement essays maybe?
Weaknesses: Horrible mistakes in the engineering essay (see above), lack of extreme depth with ECs, ethnicity maybe?
Why you think you were accepted: I don’t really want to speculate, but maybe because of the strengths I listed above?
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere yet! :)

General Comments:
I’ve been reading these threads forever, and it’s surreal to be posting this right now! I really don’t know why I was accepted while others here were deferred or rejected - y’all seem SO AWESOME. I’M SURE EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT FOR Y’ALL IN THE END AND YOU’LL END UP AT TRULY GREAT SCHOOLS. I’m truly honored and thankful to be accepted by Princeton, and I promise I’ll make the best use of my time there. Hopefully this post will help someone in the future. :)

**Decision: Deferred **

Objective

SAT I (breakdown): 2380 (800-800-780), superscore 2400
ACT (breakdown): 36 (36, 36, 36, 36, 10)
SAT II: Lit 800, Chem 770, Math II 760
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A; weighted 4.36
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
AP (place score in parenthesis): Calc BC, Stats, English Lang, Spanish, World, Euro, Music Theory (5s), Chem (4)
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: International Relations Honors, Calculus 3, AP Bio, AP Physics C: Mech, AP English Lit, AP Spanish Lit (independent study), AP US Gov (independent study), Advanced Studio Art Honors, summer Intro Econ Policy with thesis. Note: I have broken the record for number of classes taken by a student at my school and have 36 high school course credits
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Avogadro, IPPF, NMSF

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Paul Green School of Rock Music, 6 years playing keyboard and electric bass. Toured nationally as an AllStar and played at Lollapalooza, also a member of the house band. Cross Country, 4 years, 3-year varsity letter and senior year captain. Mu Alpha Theta (president). Women’s Leadership Club (founder and president). Jazz Band (founder and bandleader). Also, I write musicals.

Art supplement: I sent in 3, which may have been a mistake, though I thought they were all good. Music composition one was definitely fine. Playwriting was probably good too. Visual art, they told me send it…

Job/Work Experience: Basketball team scorekeeper (big time commitment). Math, science and ACT tutor.
Volunteer/Community service: Part of a group of kids that visits and provides resources for a home for needy kids
Summer Activities: Toured with School of Rock nationwide, summer history courses, tutoring, cross country
Essays: Common app I thought was really good, described how much I loved basketball even though I wasn’t good at it, and how I learned to contribute to the team in other ways than playing. Supplement was decent, I did the quote prompt and talked about a math problem that, by solving, showed me I had potential.
Teacher Recommendation: History teacher (3 AP courses, 2 independent studies), must have been great. Math teacher also must have been great.
Counselor Rec: Didn’t see it, no idea.
Additional Rec: My music theory teacher. Must have been good, because she talked about my musicals.
Interview: It went fine. We had a 30-minute conversation about the differences between orchestra and marching band.

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Math
State (if domestic applicant): OH
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Asian and white
Gender: F
Income Bracket: Just out of financial aid territory
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): STEM girl

Reflection: My college counselor was in shock. I guess the moral of the story is no number of 2400s and 36s will get you in, which seems contradictory to what we are taught to believe. Some think the high scores actually hurt me. I don’t want to think about it anymore. This sucks.

Strengths: Scores, rigorous school accomplishments, music, uniqueness
Weaknesses: Asian anti-hook, too many art supplements?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think this whole process is an utter crapshoot.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Full ride to THE Ohio State University. Pending on Mich, UCLA, Berkeley. And now, of course, I have to apply to a bunch of other schools…

Decision: Accepted!!!

Objective

SAT I (breakdown): 2200 (740 CR, 710 M, 750 WR)
ACT (breakdown): didn’t take
SAT II: 720 US History, 740 Latin
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.17
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): n/a
AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Bio-5, AP US History- 5, AP Latin-5
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: Dance, Post-AP Latin Lit. Honors, AP Lang, AP Calc BC, AP Econ, AP Physics 1
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): A lot of National Latin Exam Awards, AP Scholar, Honor Roll—nothing major, but I put down four awards out of the five available spaces.

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): I play two sports (basketball and volleyball) and club volleyball so these consume most of my time. I am a peer tutor, take martial arts, and a part of one club. Not really impressive I know.
Job/Work Experience: I take care of my older sister sometimes who’s in a wheelchair.
Volunteer/Community service: Tree People–Supervisor, volunteer at a school, volunteer projects here and there but nothing really consistent.
Summer Activities: A lot of basketball and volleyball for school and preparing for tournaments in club volleyball. I volunteered a lot at my mom’s school (which is a preschool) and helped the teachers design their classrooms, and take care/teach the little kids. I am also an editor to an online cultural magazine, which is pretty cool. I read and sometimes write articles written by students around the world from various cultural backgrounds. Lastly, I volunteered for my aunt’s campaign for city council.
Essays: My common app essay was probably a 9.5/10 because it really told my background story. I didn’t really take an intellectual or metaphorical approach to my essay, but rather talked about my family background and how my dad was an ex gang member, my mother was a teen mom and how both did not really get to pursue their education. Also described my poor neighborhood and talked about the different mindsets of people in my neighborhood versus the those of the kids I attend school with (I attend a very rich and prestigious private school). I really liked my essay and thought it was very compelling.

My supplements were pretty good too. The large supplemental essay was probably an 8/10. I wrote on the question about who influenced me the most, and I talked about my sister who was born with cerebral palsy and how she has taught me to appreciate the little things in life. Kind of cheesy, but it was genuine.

Teacher Recommendation: English and Latin—> I love both of my teachers and I know they liked me enough so I think the recommendations turned out well. I was a very outspoken and participative student in their classes.

Counselor Rec: My dean is awesome. My old dean left right before my senior year started, but this new one really liked me and saw the potential in me. I think he wrote an amazing rec, despite the little time he has known me.
Additional Rec: n/a

Interview: Loved my interview! Lasted two hours. Im not sure if it made an impact on my college decision, but I really was able to convey my personal story to the interviewer. I thought it was going to go bad because it was my first interview and the guy interviewing me graduated from princeton before my parents were born (1968, i think) and liked folk music (all I knew about folk was Bob Dylan). But despite these differences, the interview flowed smoothly and I think I really showed my passion for learning, my intellectual curiosity, and my love for princeton. (9/10)

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: YES
Intended Major: microbiology or neuroscience
State (if domestic applicant): california
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private School
Ethnicity: Hispanic (Mexican)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: <$80,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Well I had a lot going for me in terms of being hispanic and therefore an URM, as well as being low income. I am not actually first generation since my dad did graduate from a small college but I am the first one in my family to really attend a major university/college.

Reflection

Strengths: Course Rigor (Apparently, it is impressive that Im a hispanic female in Calculus BC, and essays. My essays were very personal and again I would like to think compelling. Showed the struggle. Also, my family situation is really unique so I think that helped me in a way. I showed the struggle. lol Interest and Success in Latin (not very many people take latin)
Weaknesses: I had a B- in AP Physics 1 on my 1st quarter grades so I thought I was going to automatically get deferred because of it. Senior year has actually been really tough for me. Lack of Awards and Majorly dedicated extracurriculars. I play two sports, but I think those consumed up so much of my time that I never really invested any time into developing my interests in other extracurriculars. For all I know, I could’ve done some summer research at a university as an internship and find the cure to cancer or start my own business.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was accepted because Im a hard working student and I’ve worked my butt off for 12 years. It’s been difficult and Ive encountered a lot of obstacles in the way, but I like that I have a unique story and I think the adcom’s saw my dedication and hard work.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Only applied early to Princeton. Might apply to 3 other schools. But at least now I don’t have to apply to 12.

General Comments: I just want to thank God for opening up doors for me and blessing me with this wonderful opportunity. I couldn’t have done it without Him and the rest of the people who’ve supported me along the way.
Congrats to everyone who got in! And for those who got deferred or rejected, hang in there-- everything happens for a reason and you’ll end up somewhere great. Trust me. :)

To all future CCers who will peek into this thread, and wonder if they have what it takes.

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Dance(35+ hrs a week); Technology Student Association(Chapter President and Campaign Manager for State and National campaigns); Model United Nations(Founder); Ethics Bowl; Theater; Student Government(Secretary); Hosting foreign exchange student; Small group leader at church
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: a little here and there, but biggest project was directing a play at local YMCA for 4th and 5th graders
Summer Activities: Dance, dance, and more dance. Technology Student Association (TSA) National Conferences; International Travel with family; Internship with TN State House Representative
Essays: Common App maybe 6/10? I didn’t feel very confident in it but apparently it worked; it was about becoming an adult in my community through a dance piece that I was in. Princeton Supplement Essay probably 8/10; it was fairly simplistic but was very indicative of my personality. It was on a book quote and how this quote has related to my life; I ended up using a quote from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest(my favorite book) and tying it in with my political internship this last summer.
Teacher Recommendation: AP Literature teacher and AP Biology teacher. I was passionate about and did well in both of those subjects and I’m sure both recommendations were go although I did not see them.
Counselor Rec: She actually read it to me and it sounded good. At the time it sounded kind of generic but I guess that didn’t matter. I assume there isn’t a huge amount of weight put on this as you are as close with your counselor personally as you are with teachers
Additional Rec: None

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: International Relations
State (if domestic applicant): Tennessee
Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: ~$120,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Strengths: Extra Curricular Activities, Essays, interview
Weaknesses: Test scores, no high levels of leadership in anything
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I was accepted mainly because of my extracurricular activities. I dance up to 40 hrs a week and have demonstrated that I am exceptional in that field through the arts supplement that I submitted; even more importantly, however, is that I showed interest by scheduling a visit one weekend in which I took a ballet class and spoke with the arts faculty. Also, my language learning, exchange student, and area of study that I am interested in give a taste as to another one of my passions.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I had only applied so far to Princeton and to my local state school(University of TN) which I had already been accepted into.

General Comments: I was not at all expecting to get in and especially not through Early Action. Honestly, I think it comes to show that Princeton really isn’t just looking for the best test scores and GPAs but for well-rounded students who have shown interest in learning in every field.

@ackack, I am surprised with your double legacy that you were deferred, especially at Princeton where I thought the legacy advantage was high. Your stats are great too. I think many universities might be going away from legacy because of all the negative publicity about it. Will you send a letter to show further interest?

Are you sure you applied for Stanford REA?

@pokemonluv125

@hanobal yeah, it hurt. But I get that I am not a top 25% candidate; I am a top-of-middle 50% candidate. I remain very hopeful about RD given the legacy thing. Essays and everything were great. But hey, it’s Princeton, and it’s a pie-in-the-sky dream for anyone.

But every legacy applicant should know: even if you are eminently qualified in terms of stats, you will likely be deferred on SCEA unless you are development list, urm, or athlete. Have lots of anecdotal evidence to back this up. Will update with RD results for future applicants to show how it all turns out.

Essays:OK, talked about unique experiences in a military school band in Common App, talked about opportunities for service to my school community in Princeton supplement
Teacher Recommendation:One math (AP Stats), one science (Bio, AP Bio), both excellent I’m sure.
Counselor Rec:Excellent, I’m sure. I go to a small school, so there is a lot of personal attention from school counselors.

Reflection

Strengths:Strong SAT scores, good AP scores, school leadership, unique school type, strong transcript, college classes
Weaknesses:No research, not very strong volunteer experiences, no internships, no employment, probably gender and ethnicity
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Princeton has been my top choice since childhood, a desire I definitely showed in my interview (by phone). I definitely experienced huge personal growth at my school, which I think was expressed well in my essays. In my opinion, strong academics was a given in order for me to consider applying to Princeton, but very personal leadership experiences and lessons learned from them are what I think stood out.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:Accepted Penn State, Pitt.

General Comments:Incredibly honored to be accepted to Princeton. I think we all need to stay humble in the admissions process; being too confident is a surefire way to disappoint yourself. I think that to a certain extent, college admissions is a big gamble, and even the most amazing among us get a coin toss at best. If you are denied from the school you love, life does go on, and I’m sure that you will find the place for you.
