[] Job/Work Experience: tutoring
[] Volunteer/Community service: service for NHS at the local library
[] Summer Activities: a little bit of research, classes, clubs continue in the summer
[] Essays: (Common App)-Talked about how Set Design connects to my very different career goals and what it taught me in high school. 10/10, worked and reworked this literally for weeks
(Long Supplement)- About a trip my family took and how it inspired me to go beyond the usual expectations. 9/10, my teacher said it was lovely
(Engineering Essay) -not much to say here, covered my interest in engineering and what I want to do at Princeton 9/10
(Short Supplements) - talked about tutoring 9/10
Teacher Recommendation: chemistry and history teachers. They know me fairly well; I doubt they were gushing, but they must have been honestly and comprehensively written. 8/10?
[] Counselor Rec: again, should have been honest but not gushing, we’ve met ten times at most 7/10
[] Additional Rec: -
[] Interview: My interviewer made me very comfortable. Was exactly an hour long and I learned a lot about Princeton. We clicked after a while due to a shared interest in art history 8/10[/ul]

Other

[ul][] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Chemical Engineering
[] State (if domestic applicant): CT
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: medium sized public

[] Income Bracket: ~100,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): female in engineering?[/ul]
[/li]

[ul]Reflection

[list][] Strengths: near perfect grades and test scores, thoughtful essays
[] Weaknesses: no major awards, little leadership
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Maybe Princeton does value pure academics, because that’s what I had. I also worked and worked on my essays, so maybe they liked that I can write even though I will be a STEM major.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: State flagship.[/ul]

General Comments:
It’s been almost a week and I’m still in shock. I was afraid they’d think I was a test-taking robot or something. You guys, take time over your essays and don’t underestimate the value of your transcript. I’ve sacrificed some of my ECs for schoolwork and it looks like that paid off. To everyone deferred/rejected: many of you are far more qualified than I am, and you will all go to schools that are a great fit for you. Best of luck! :)

Hope this helps someone!

[] Job/Work Experience: Violin Teacher
[] Volunteer/Community service: Hospital Volunteer
[] Summer Activities: Did a summer camp at a top university, didn’t mention this in my application at all
[] Essays: Common App was okay, probably a 7/10. My two shorts were also…okay. I was quite proud of my longer essay (I chose the culture prompt) and even shared it with the alum who interviewed me. He said it was amazing, too!
[] Teacher Recommendation: Math teacher - probably very good. He really loved having me in his class and said he would write me as many recs as I need. English teacher - probably good, but generic, since many students go to her.
[] Counselor Rec: He likes me, so hopefully it’s also good.
[] Additional Rec: n/a. Was going to send a violin teacher rec but decided against it. Might have my research mentor send a rec in since I was deferred.

[] Job/Work Experience: none
[] Volunteer/Community service: 98 hours
[] Summer Activities: None
[] Essays: I was actually pretty proud of my Common App essay. I spoke about the struggles my grandparents had as immigrants, and how it is now my turn to continue the path they had created. Yet, my Princeton essay, which talked about understanding my brother in order to understand myself and the world, was only reviewed by me.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One from my English Honors teacher and current Student Government advisor and another one from my AP Calculus teacher. Both were WONDERFUL. I was mesmerized by how well they spoke about me.
[] Counselor Rec: Since I was the only student under her who was matched through Questbridge, I am hoping she didn’t use the generic recommendation letter she gives everyone… She must have seen the desperation in my eyes. She must have.
[] Additional Rec:
[li] Interview: It went AMAZINGLY well. It felt like I made my passion for the sciences and my true personality shine through. I wasn’t nervous, which helped me demonstrate why I was made for Princeton.[/li][ /list][ b]Other**

Reflection

Strengths: Extra Curricular and Grades
Weaknesses: Test Scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Definitely because I was recruited
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Only applied to Princeton

General Comments:
Honestly guys, if you’re trying to get into any Ivy League school you have to have something special about you. Getting good grades and good test scores really don’t cut it for schools like this, look at the grades and test scores of people that got rejected/deferred. Focus on extra-curricular and something that makes you different for the best shot.

Hey are you from Taipei American School?
I’m from IBSH LOL

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/600ish
AP (place score in parenthesis): (5): world history, lang, stats, psych, euro, calc ab; (4): us history, chem.
IB (place score in parenthesis): not available at school
Senior Year Course Load: macro/micro- economics, bio, literature, u.s government, calculus bc, newspaper
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): engineering medal, 2 pretty big national writing contests (one of them recognized by congress), national ap scholar, national hispanic scholar.

Subjective
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): president of the math society, editor-in-chief, founded a writing society, quiz bowl team, treasurer of national honor society, vp of philosophy club
Job/Work Experience: interned for a major newspaper, freelanced as a software engineer, was a reporter for a teen newspaper in my region
Volunteer/Community service: I did some nhs service projects; i took care of horses at a ranch used for children going through emotional struggles; and worked as a counselor for a theater program
Summer Activities: did the above jobs/volunteering and took some classes at a local college
Essays: My CommonApp was pretty good, it could have been better but the actual substance is what really pulled it through. I just made it as personal and emotional as possible, tried to make them understand my voice (through an anecdote) and my writing style. My supplement was the best thing I’ve ever written; it’s too personal to explain, but I loved it.
Teacher Recommendation: amazing, couldn’t have asked for better.
Counselor Rec: the most generic thing ever…
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: He was amazing and I think he liked me. He was really interested in literature so we had a great time talking.

Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Y
Intended Major: English
State (if domestic applicant): southern region
Country (if international applicant): U.S
School Type: public
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: M
Income Bracket: <100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, maybe my focus in both the sciences and arts

Reflection: Princeton wasn’t my #1 school at first but I love it so much now. I only wrote one of these so that nervous RD and next year’s applicants know that in their essays they should pour their hearts out. Do it however you can, don’t feel constricted by a formulaic, impersonal essay. Go for the amazing story – funny or heart-wrenching, it doesn’t matter. Show who you are but don’t flaunt it. Most importantly, be concise.

Strengths:
Weaknesses: no sports
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Look at reflection
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: so far just princeton. I’m waiting unc chapel hill and a few other IVY schools rd.

Comments:
Good luck to all the deferred and rejected! I’m so lucky to have been accepted after looking at everyone else in this thread.
