***OFFICIAL PSAT Wednesday, October 12

I interpreted "different mindset" as something along the lines of a different perspective: the doctor perceives the blush not as some sort of miracle, but rather as a mechanical signal that something is happening.

The whole theme was that as you get smarter, like the doctor, you become too analytical to the point that you form a "different mindset" that overlooks all the things that were once miraculous and beautiful.

A mindset doesn't have to be in a different person.

Do you remember the other answers because I forget what I put.

Also on the writing, how many Es did you get. I got 1, the volcano one.

other choices were:

open rupture
break from confinement

there was one other one though that was pretty close to the right answer. I remember really seriously considering that one, but then I settled with teh mindset.

Yeah, I also put E for the volcano.

I don't remember if I had any more E's, but I know there were a ton of A's on the other writing section where you fix the whole parts of sentences.

Yeah I think I chose the other one, whatever it was. What exactly was the question?

THe question was something like "why does the author cite the example of the doctor in lines xx-xx". It basically asked for the purpose of the doctor's situation.

the doctor was an example the author used to express his experiences in piloting steamboats that led him to become an expert at his actual job, but cost him his ability to see the beauty of what was involved in his task.

There was really sound logic behind "escape from confinement" that made me change it from "telling irregularity" when i did it....I hope....

the original portion of the passage was something to the effect of a break in a cheek". how could this be interpreted as "an escape from confinement in a cheek" instead of "a telling irregularity in a cheek"? irregularity was the most sensible answer.

Well, I kind of feel that now, but I think it was like comparing it to something in the passage, and it kind've just felt really good. I probably got it wrong, and you all are most likely right.

Actually in math, OR is typically used in the inclusive sense: 3 or 4 can be 3 or 4 or 3 and 4. Not, as those people saying the answer 5 are saying: 3 or 4 but not 3 and 4.

For the river passage on the word "break", I picked the choice of "A planned interruption".

My reasoning was that the narrator was talking throughout the passage about how as he got to know the surroundings of the river more, he became more analytical and less able to enjoy the beauty of nature. In the doctor passage, he makes the analogy that a blush on someone's cheek is merely a "break" from some horrible things happening later. I thought that meant that meant that doctors would see a blush and think: "that may be good now, but hell's going to break lose later". I guess the issue is, I don't see how the blushing of cheeks is symptomatic of a disease as "a telling irregularity" would suggest.

I like the reasoning logicus...YOu are making my head spin with even more "maybe it was , No wait it was"

I thought it was a telling irregularity simply because it said something about a virus in that sma sentence. So, i didn't think it was planned in a sense...

I put a telling irregularity. The author "knew the language" of the river and he provided several examples of how this phenomena would result in that and so on because he is a professional steamboater. He then makes an anology by providing the example with the doctor. The doctor is trained to see the blush of the cheek as a sign of a disease, making it a telling irregularity.

I put " a telling irregularity" as well ..... seemed like it made the most sense out of all of the choices ....
In other news, Xiggi was correct(of course)! ETS did not get back to me, and will prob not get back to me for a while. In my email, I basically explained that both 5 and 25 could be interpreted as correct. I wonder what they will say?? They rarely invalidate problems, and its not like I did bad in the math and I need this point (2 wrong) , its more the point that that question is worded in a bad way (imo). I still see OR as one or the other - not inclusive . I am probably beating a dead horse, but we will see.
Not many writing problems, can anyone think of any??

What was the purpose of the doctor's example? Did everyone get mindset?

does anyone know if it is prohibited for GC's to give students the PSAT taken on wendesday??

Yeah tell me about it .. I hate cheating so much cuz it's annoying to waste time worrying about someone copying your right answers, instead of being able to focus completely on the test.

you know when im' alone with that GC she doesn't seem too mean (she's kinda old), and she told my mom that i'm "absolutly adorable, a hard worker .. " and all this other praise.. so my mom didn't really believe that she was acting differently toward me on the test. My mom actually got kinda mad and told me that next time I have to mark it in my book, but it's hard to see the mark on the gray sheets, and plus it takes time to flip through the pages to see where you marked. it takes like 2 secs to make a light circle around the number on the answer sheet and erase it later, which is why i do that .. i've been doing that since .. intermediate school. i never actually marked it in my book before .. do you all mark the question in your book if you want to go back to it??

If she didn't happen to erase the marks, would the scantron count those couple of questions wrong? It was a light mark, i mean you could see that it was circled but it was definently not as dark as the bubbled in circles . . ahh i just don't know, i'm already tired of discussing this test

heya vinny i don't think they can give us the books because I thought they were mailed to collegeboard along with the answer sheets

a teacher who was also in charge said we get the books back along with our scores in December
