is it official that osu is changing to the sem system?

Fall 2012

Yes and because of the change, the spring semeter 2012 ends in April. This is really cool because it opens up the possibility of doing courses from mid-May to mid-June at other schools early summer sessions.

caolila, are you sure about that?

I checked the OSU Academic Calendar and here is what it says for Spring 2012:

Final examinations

June 4-7 (M-R)

Here’s the link:

Or did you mean starting AFTER spring 2012, that classes will end in April?

:|

i like the quarter system.

OSUeconomics you are right. It is the summer AFTER semesters start, so that is Spring 2013. Final exams are end of April and graduation is May 5th, leaving time to take one month summer courses mid-May to mid-June. Sorry, my mistake.

I’ve heard OSU will be offering a May Term, so there’s no need to take one at another university ;)

@kelseyg - yeah except when you are out of state and costs are way different…sigh. I wish this semester change were happening next year. It would help me out a lot.

I have tried to get to the bottom of this but only found a few convoluted answers. Why the hell is OSU switching to semesters? There seems to be so much pain and frustration in the transition, so for what valid reasons are they going through all this trouble?

"Advantages and Disadvantages of Specific Calendars

Reports from the University of California at Davis and Ohio State University that examined the merits of calendar system use addressed the issue of quarter versus semester system advantages and suggested the following. Some of the advantages of the semester calendar cited are that: (1) it provides an opportunity for more thorough examination of subjects, research assignments, and term papers; (2) it increases time spent in each course, making it possible to receive in-depth learning and a better opportunity for students to “rebound” from a poor start in a course;(3) it promotes greater interaction between faculty and students; (4) it reduces the tendency towards course fragmentation; and (5) for transfer students, it offers greater compatibility with other institutions’ calendars and curriculums."

And by getting out when most everyone else does (mid-May) we have an increased chance for summer internships or summer jobs. At least that is what they said at orientation.

All Ohio universities still on quarters are having to switch to semesters, including the privates. People like those in our family are really in the middle with potential grad dates of 2013, 2014. I anticipate not getting done in 4 years, but they started in knowing this anyway. So one was unaware. If we had been too concerned, out student would have simpy attended a semester school.

Our student for one is looking forward to the semester change. Thinks quarters feel too rushed and sometimes barely gets into a topic. However, main interest is getting a summer job or internship. Where we live, in an area with many local colleges, she has been shut out of summer jobs because they are already filled by early May when msot students can start working. (She began looking in winter - either places weren’t sure if they would be hiring with the economy, or if they were, they needed the students to start in May, not the middle of June). With so many fewer jobs now with the economy, she’s basically had zero job opportunity because she wasn’t home soon enough, and didn’t have a connection to be hired by someone she knew. Plus, she couldn’t take a local college course she hoped to as it was only offered early summer session.

It’s been a looooooong summer for her as some of her semester friends have been working since April/May and making money and she’s just trying to make money in fits and starts with odd jobs. I think semesters will be better for the students in the end.

I wonder if that is why OSU is promoting study abroad so much…something to do in the summer if you can’t find a job.
