[li] going to attend? Tough decision between ND and UCLA. I will visit both in the next couple of weeks, so should have good side-by-side comparison to base my decision off of.[/li][/ul]Other Factors:

[/ul][ b]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: really good

[] Counselor Rec: good content, but not a great writer
[] Hook (if any): NO
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type: mediocre public
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: F
[] major strength/weakness: **Strength: Rank, GPA, leadership and ECs/weakness: Middle-class white kid from a mediocre public school, competing with some of the top-prep/private schools in CA probably did me over. And I'm not a legacy or a minority.
[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: see "weaknesses"
[li] going to attend? Nope[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Just wanted to add a comment to all prospective students: When you go to the info sessions at ND, they'll preach to you about how they evaluate you "holistically." Well, that really isn't true. I don't just say this bc I've been waitlisted; I've been waitlisted at other places as well, but I really felt like those other places gave me a fair shot. At ND, unless you are a legacy, minority, or have near-perfect SATs, don't get your hopes up. A personal statement won't save you, nor will captaining every sports team and starting a club to raise awareness on hunger in Africa (believe me, I did all those, and more ;) ). Should you still try your best to get in? Of course! But don't get your hopes up. Realistically, by the time they admit all qualified legacies (which make up 27% of the incoming class), all qualified minorities, and all varsity athletes, suddenly that ~25% acceptance rate is extremely deceiving. You're basically competing for a spot at a mid-->lower-level Ivy league school. I've been admitted to Berkeley, UCLA-honors, Michigan, Boston College, and Virginia. So I never lacked the talent to get in, only the "uncontrollables," I suppose. Just keep that in mind, and never, never get down on yourself for what you can't control.

CONGRATS to all admitted, you guys are awesome!!! I'll always have a special place for ND. To those denied, ND isn't the only good school out there, there are many, many amazing schools that you will find a place at. To those waitlisted: if you get in, great, if not, read the "to those denied" message ;)

Go Irish.

vc08:
Why did you send in your average ACT scores and not just your PERFECT SCORE of 36????

For the record.. vc08.. That's not really true what you're saying. I'm not a legacy and don't have nearly perfect scores and I got in.. I mean it's unpredictable.. but so is every other school of similar caliber.

[li] going to attend? heck yes![/li][/ul]Other Factors: uh parents are immigrants/refugees, and i only have one older sister who finished college, so not really a first generation anymore.

[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: My test scores and Rank I guess
[li] going to attend? i guess not[/li][/ul]Other Factors:

I really thought my legacy (4 generations) would help me, and my varisty sports and extra curriculars. I thought that the worst thing would be a waitlist. I am devastated, I've been crying all afternoon and I know It'll take a while to feel better

What was the worst is that when I opened the mailbox there was a giant white envelope, from another school, but I honestly thought at first I had gotten in.

Congrats to everyone though, you all have amazing stats. You are all so lucky. It's just so hard after falling in love with the school at the age of 5.

accepted and named notre dame scholar :) prolly not going though...we'll see

next: haha the 36 was in English, my composite was 31...I wish it was 36 though!

dj: That's exactly what I was saying. To have a legit shot, you're EITHER a well-qualified legacy OR have near-perfect scores/minority (non-caucasian) status. Not that there aren't smart legacies, don't get me wrong. And it's nothing away from your accomplishment. I'm just saying that's the way ND has, and probably always will, work. It's a political admissions process, more so than other similar schools. I think from the people who've posted so far, you can see that that's a fairly accurate assumption.

But again, congrats to those admitted, you all look like awesome people!

AC: I'm really sorry about your denial, but remember, you can always transfer, or attend another similar-caliber school! best of luck!

wait.. I don't know if I mistyped or you misread but I'm not a legacy. My bro goes there but they specifically say that has no legacy effect. I agree though admissions are maybe a little too legacy-lenient.. But that's probably what makes the school spirit so strong.

Thanks vc08,

I don't think legacy is as important as you think, I would have been a 5th generation legacy

I think it's all test scores, and unfortunately I am a bad test taker.

I know what you're feeling. My oldest son is a sophomore at Notre Dame; my second son, just 13 months younger, was rejected when he applied last year.

We were thrilled when my oldest received his big envelope, and crushed when my second son walked home from the Post Office with a rejection letter. But something happened along the way - son #2 accepted a nice offer from Ohio State, wound up in a good dorm with roommates that have become close friends, and is thriving in his studies. He's even given up hating Notre Dame enough to enjoy going back to campus to visit his brother. :)

Two thoughts for you, actually - if your Freshman year is successful, you'll make an excellent transfer candidate, and you may wind up a Domer, yet. Or, you may find that time has softened the blow, and you'll stay where you are, and thrive.

Good luck to you. I'll keep you in prayer.

dj: haha funny I actually asked my admissions rep, and she said any "direct alumni relationship". I asked her if that included siblings, and she said yes.

But hey, you got in, that's awesome and I wish you the best of luck there!

AC: Think of it this way: they let a good one get away ;) best of luck to you as well.
