I chose Rice first before Rice/Baylor, for it's location, wonderful atmosphere, and the great academic/extracurricular opportunities available. During my junior year, I dreamed about going out of state, perhaps to the East coast, but then I realized that I couldn't find the difference between all the Ivies and other schools in the northeast. They all seemed the same to me, although I'm sure that other people have a different opinion on that ^_^. I wanted to get away from Texas and the notorious heat (which is what I'm feeling right now- it's in the 80s-90s in Austin), but when I latched onto the idea of going to Rice, I couldn't picture myself anywhere else, so I applied ED. I applied to some other schools as well, but I had to withdraw my applications when I got accepted to Rice.

On a side not- a lot of people believe that Texas is "backwards" and full of conservatives, and while Texas DOES have tons of conservatives (I can't dispute that) there are also pockets of liberals. As for cowboy hates and riding horses all day, that's a very unjustified stereotype. I'm a liberal in Texas, and I love it. I also respect conservatives, and many of them make me laugh, which is fabulous because I love laughing. I don't believe that a draw-back to Rice/Baylor is the conservative atmosphere of Texas, and political ideology shouldn't be one of the "rubrics" to judging character anyway.

My belief is that you should pick a combined program because you want to be there (at the undergraduate college) and not because of the guaranteed acceptance into medical school. A lot of people choose the normal route, pre-med, no guaranteed acceptance, and they develop into wonderful, capable doctors. There's more than one path to becoming a doctor.

I picked Rice/Baylor because of Rice, the freedom to major in something non-science, to explore life, less stress, and most importantly because I want to become a doctor. I would be happy with Rice without Rice/Baylor, however I wouldn't trade Rice/Baylor for anything, and now my Rice experience will be all the more memorable. I definitely agree with BestBuy; Rice/Baylor was the best thing that ever happened to me, and it is an honor to be in the program.

Btw, are any of you still in school now? Have you gotten that room questionnaire yet? Some people on CC have gotten their roommate questionnaire, but I haven't. Hmmm...I hope that I get it soon, since I'll be leaving in early June.
