Official Rice/Baylor Thread!

Siva,

Congrats on Rice/Baylor. Is the SAT score that you posted earlier one test date or a combination of best math and verbal scores from more than one test? Would Rice/Baylor or any other prog for that matter take one’s best scores from more than one test or just look at the higher of the two tests as a whole? Thanks.

i honestly dont think that really matters. once u get into rice i think its only based on your essay and interview. baylor only comes in after rice accepts you and i think rice takes the higher of both. hope that helps

Thanks, mjd88. That was my score from one "sitting". But honestly, I agree wholeheartedly with BestBuy. Once you are accepted into Rice, I don't think numbers-based credentials are very important at all.

I agree with Siva and BestBuy; the reason why there's an interview is so that Baylor can see the person and not the numbers. While SAT scores might contribute to getting into Rice, they won't play a significant role in Rice/Baylor.

Have you guys gotten any mail from Rice or Baylor since you sent in your deposit (other than the Solutions magazine)?

Nope...just the BCM thing.

Nope- just the magazine.

i didn't get anything =(. i guess auroral is a bigger part of the family.

Don't worry BestBuy! You'll get it soon. :) Baylor wouldn't send the magazine to some people, but not to others; that doesn't make any sense.

I just live closer to Houston. Plus, Baylor doesn't send stuff through priority mail, so it takes longer to receive.

whoa ur sy-kick, i got it today ^.^ .

Just to keep a tally, so far we've got 5 people going to R/B on this thread:

Yay! 6/15ish

hey, what are your real names? im steve.

My name is Vickie. Very nice to meet you Steve ^_^

Btw, I got mail from Rice today- student health data form, two brochures, and a flyer. Rice is sending out a roommate questionnaire in late May, and we should get college assignments and orientation information in early July.

If you haven't gotten anything from Rice yet, you should receive mail very soon!

My name is Ahilan Sivaganesan, but you guys can call me Siva. Haha, 6/15 is awesome!

My name is Erica. Nice to meet you all! =D

I got the packet too, auroral corona - can't wait until the roommate questionnaire comes...one step closer to knowing what colleges we'll be in!

lol.. you guys are soo lucky.. haha.. i have two more loooong years of high school left..lol. its all good.. :).. but anywayz.. im just wondering..what made you guys choose rice/baylor over some of the other schools..?

I had to choose Rice/Baylor over a bunch of other schools, including Dartmouth, but what did it for me was really going down for Owl Weekend (three-day open house for admitted students). You get a great feeling for the campus since you get to spend two nights there, and there are academic panels and club fairs going on while you're there, so you get to see all parts of the Rice community.

Rice's commitment to undergraduate education is also outstanding - I got to meet one-on-one with a chemistry professor who had actually won the Nobel Prize (who had emailed me after I was admitted interim decision), and just thinking that he was taking the time to meet with prospective students was pretty amazing!

Of course, the opportunities of combined med programs are amazing...no MCATs, loose GPA requirements. Having stressed in high school, I can't wait to loosen up a bit during college. Baylor is ranked #13 for med schools in the nation, so it's tough to beat.

But anyway, those are just some of the reasons I picked Rice/Baylor over some other colleges and combined medical programs. I would definitely suggest you apply to it!!

I had to choose rice/baylor over a lot of schools too. the hardest to let go was probably columbia cause nyc seems so incredible and its always hard to get away from prestige. in the end, when I knew for sure that I wanted to become a doctor and there wasn't anything else i'd rather be doing 20 years from now, I came to understand that rice/baylor was the best thing that has ever happened to me. sure the no mcat, easy gpa is a plus but the thing with rice/baylor is that you can truly embrace the profession you are goin to uphold for the rest of your life. its like an honor, a gift and a privilege arriving 4 years early with a lot less of the stress and subsequent responsibilities. rice/baylor lets you be who you want to be as an undergrad; it's terrible to become another neurotic pre-med, grade obsessed, undergrad. ultimately, i choose rice/baylor because it's that piece of mind that makes you fall in love all over again with your childhood dream of takin that hippocratic oath.

I chose Rice first before Rice/Baylor, for it's location, wonderful atmosphere, and the great academic/extracurricular opportunities available. During my junior year, I dreamed about going out of state, perhaps to the East coast, but then I realized that I couldn't find the difference between all the Ivies and other schools in the northeast. They all seemed the same to me, although I'm sure that other people have a different opinion on that ^_^. I wanted to get away from Texas and the notorious heat (which is what I'm feeling right now- it's in the 80s-90s in Austin), but when I latched onto the idea of going to Rice, I couldn't picture myself anywhere else, so I applied ED. I applied to some other schools as well, but I had to withdraw my applications when I got accepted to Rice.

On a side not- a lot of people believe that Texas is "backwards" and full of conservatives, and while Texas DOES have tons of conservatives (I can't dispute that) there are also pockets of liberals. As for cowboy hates and riding horses all day, that's a very unjustified stereotype. I'm a liberal in Texas, and I love it. I also respect conservatives, and many of them make me laugh, which is fabulous because I love laughing. I don't believe that a draw-back to Rice/Baylor is the conservative atmosphere of Texas, and political ideology shouldn't be one of the "rubrics" to judging character anyway.

My belief is that you should pick a combined program because you want to be there (at the undergraduate college) and not because of the guaranteed acceptance into medical school. A lot of people choose the normal route, pre-med, no guaranteed acceptance, and they develop into wonderful, capable doctors. There's more than one path to becoming a doctor.

I picked Rice/Baylor because of Rice, the freedom to major in something non-science, to explore life, less stress, and most importantly because I want to become a doctor. I would be happy with Rice without Rice/Baylor, however I wouldn't trade Rice/Baylor for anything, and now my Rice experience will be all the more memorable. I definitely agree with BestBuy; Rice/Baylor was the best thing that ever happened to me, and it is an honor to be in the program.

Btw, are any of you still in school now? Have you gotten that room questionnaire yet? Some people on CC have gotten their roommate questionnaire, but I haven't. Hmmm...I hope that I get it soon, since I'll be leaving in early June.
