Hey Texans! I want to get more info on Baylor and Rice. Rice is my #2/3 choice and Baylor is my #4 choice. Rice is looking better than Baylor right now when it comes to the student body and class sizes in general. I haven't visited the schools yet.

Howdy! (and I'm not even from Texas...=P ) There's an official website for the program, which is a helpful for getting the bigger picture - I don't know the URL off hand, but if you google "Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars Program," I'm sure you'll come up with it.

Both Rice and Baylor are top notch schools, and when it comes to Baylor, it's ranked #13 in the nation. Going to Baylor's website is very helpful...as you can see, mostly internet resources will help you get a good idea of the program. I met a couple of Rice/Baylor students when I visited Rice for Owl Weekend, and all were very, very happy with the continuum. Like most medical programs, no MCATS are required - which definitely eases the stress load. Also, because of not having to take the MCATs, Rice/Baylor students can space out their science courses instead of cramming them into the first two/three years. Just some things to think about...but let us know if you have any specific questions!

Are you guys going to get a Mac or a PC?

I'm definetely going for a PC. For some reason, I just feel awkward using Mac OS! I'm sure either is fine - all depends on personal preference.

What college are you guys in??

I got into Wiess college!! TEAM WIESS! I'm sooo happy! ^_^

lol, rice/baylor is my top choice.. you gusy are so lucky! congratulations..again.. lol..! Anything you would consider especially important in applying to rice/baylor other than just being really well rounded? Are there any outstanding extracurriculars any of you did that really set you apart for rice/baylor?

that's awesome, auroral!! I'm still waiting for my forms (I'm in CT) - I hope they come soon!

Haha, I too suffer from "living too far from Rice" syndrome. Mail takes a while to get to Ohio too... it'll be great when the college info finally arrives, though.

Faithful101, stuff like research and other "medical" experiences are always good. It's hard to be too specific because there isn't a set formula for acceptance.

Just got mine - it's Lovett for me.

Martel!! Yeah! (insert college cheer here)

twinklestar - I am so excited to have you at lovett. And all the other rice/balyors too (ok, well there's only 2 that I can think of, but you'll meet them soon enough).
Anyway, it's going to be cool.

The amazing Jenskate has returned to CC!!! Where's the virtual red carpet? :-)

lol, i've been here lurking the whole time! But anyone can always PM me, I've been answering those.

Hey, I am a prospective Rice/Baylor applicant. I visited Rice, and was glad to have gone. Although the conservative attitude isn't the best for me, I have realized that I can succeed anywhere no matter the political atmosphere. But I wanted to show you lucky few who got into the program something I picked up on Princeton Review.com about Rice.

What Rice Students Say About Student Body

At a "school notoriously composed of geeks, dorks, and nerds," Rice is home to students who are generally "very future-oriented, looking for internships, summer jobs, and study abroad programs," to the extent that, "if it won't look good on a resume, most students aren't interested." Students discuss diversity in terms of personality rather than race: "Everyone is an individual, with an interesting story and different background, so you don't have as many large cliques of people who all think alike." The more moneyed students are called "pretentious" and "self-important," and reportedly "students that are not rich, white, or straight are tolerated only superficially." On the other hand, a student comments, "We are here to learn and become friends, not show off our cars." Many female students agree that "the environment for women leaves a bit to be desired at times," partially due to the "politically apathetic" environment that tolerates some ongoing male-centric practices.

Have any current female Rice/Baylor students (Jenskate) felt the last part to be particularly true, and if so, how do you deal with it? Thanks, I appreciate all the information you can provide.

um, no. not at all. there was a big discussion about this a couple of months ago, so search the archives. But really, I don't know where they got that whole section from - especially the last part. Rice is also not a "conservative atmosphere." Hopefully the new edition is more accurate (to be published in august). Read the insider's guide to the colleges for a more accurate profile.

hey all, i was just wondering if you "slip" below the 3.2 borderline one semester then is it all over? Does anyone know of anyone gettin kicked out of the prgm cause of a slip in GPA. I'm askin cause i know psu/tj has a sort of 2 strikes your out thing but i was wondering about rice/baylor. thanks.

BestBuy -

They REALLY don't want people getting kicked out. So they make it hard to get kicked out. You get 3 strikes, and even then it's at their discretion, so it's possible you could be below 3.2 for 4 out of your 8 semesters and still be allowed to stay. I wouldn't recommend finding out for yourself how lenient they are about this, of course. You'd have a better chance of staying in if you had a REALLY good excuse.

Anyway, it's really not all that hard to get a 3.2 if you do what you are suppossed to do. All the Rice/Baylors are really smart and shouldn't have trouble. That's why they picked you for the program in the first place.

And AuroralCorona, if you read this, your PM mailbox is full.

Can you please tell me about the curriculum? Are there core requirements? Which school are you in? Language requirement and so forth. Thanks

i wasn't plannin on slipping but it's always nice to know that baylor gives you a buffer. thanks jenskate.

Are Rice/Baylor students considered for scholarships at BMC or are the scholarships only available to entice students who may or may not accept. If your Rice/Baylor they probably assume you plan on attending BMC with or without a scholarship.
