I don’t know why I torture myself by following this thread. As a prospective transfer student, I know Ill be in your shoes very soon. I just can’t help but… watch.
@kibbles UCLA: 18% UCB: 17.5% UCD: 43% UCSC: 58.4%
These are my safety schools because I have a geographical advantage. I come from a rural school whose average ACT is 25 and I have a 32. My school has a history of good students being accepted.
Anyone from NYC applying to Rice, or is currently at Rice? If u r at Rice, I would like to know how u like it and if a big adjustment from the eat cost. Thank you.
@CrystalRose7 I think you’re just setting yourself up to be really sad when you’re rejected by one or more of those schools. My school has an average ACT far lower than that and it doesn’t mean a thing.
Agree with @AllRightNow and just believe that it is not okay to call these schools your “safeties” on a message board where people with superior stats are expressing their disappointment at being rejected from some of those same schools. Seems pretty pretentious and mean-spirited but I guess these boards are turning more hostile as we get closer to the end of admissions. Makes me sad.
btw: according to my ED friend, their visit weekend is the second weekend of April, which leads me to believe that decisions will be released earlier than April 1st. people will need time to make reservations and stuff.
@CrystalRose7 Yeah…but they were “good” students. Those are NOT safety schools.
@CrystalRose7 Btw the avg SAT at my school is around a 1600 and I got a 2380, but I’m not expecting to get into any of the type of schools you listed.
One person’s safety may be another person’s reach or dream school. The point of this thread is for people hoping to get into Rice to support one another. Discussion of other schools seems to be beside the point.
@JuicyMango @kibbles @AllRightNow No offense, but you people need to calm down. @CrystalRose7 has her/his safety schools and you all have yours. Respect, people. @CrystalRose7 stated his/her dream school is Harvard. Wouldn’t it make sense that s/he have other top schools as safeties? S/he also stated s/he has a geographical advantage, so it makes sense. Realize that acceptance rates vary by region. To my knowledge, these can be safety schools for people applying to Ivies.
As a fellow cali applicant with ELC status, I can also say that those schools are definitely safeties for in state applicants with similar stats. I and many of my friends with similar stats got into all the UCs with regents…
@PinkQuetzal9 you commented the same thing has crystalrose7 on other forums. stop trying to rile people up, you’re clearly both accounts
agree with the other Cali kids here. with all the disadvantages of being from Cali, the only advantage is that our students could count on the UCs as safeties. my DD applied only to UCs as safety. All other apps were to BSMD schools and Ivy/Ivy-like schools with very low % of acceptance. The UCs she considered safeties: UCLA/UCB, UCSD, UCD & UCSB, and she got into most of them already, some with merit scholarship.
@caligrown Lol you made my day. :)) That makes sense and I can see where you got that from, but no. I do know @CrystalRose7 though if that makes you feel better. And FYI, I put the question because it was interesting and I wanted to see what other people said. If you look at the UCLA thread you might find an interesting fact though… pg 118 and 121

Let’s forget about the safety schools. What drew you to Rice? Me, it was the close proximity to a great hospital since I plan to be pre-med.
Honestly Idk what exactly drew me to rice. It’s just one of those things where the feel happens to be what your looking for
Rice just makes me happy- warm faculty and student body, the dining options, the traditions. And I can double major in two unrelated majors, Economics and Theatre, which I’ve heard is really common in Rice. Really hope I get in!
What hospital are you talking about? @CrystalRose7 TBH Houston in general is a great place for any future doctor like you and I
@TikopiaRock28 Well “you and your friends” don’t represent the entirety of the student population in California. I know a lot of people with much better stats who didn’t get into some of the UC’s this year. They are DEFINITELY not safeties. You guys must have gotten lucky to get regents as well. Count your lucky stars.
@PinkQuetzal9 We are only trying to help. It’s just unrealistic to see these schools as safeties when you have mediocre stats. Geographical location is not a guarantee of admission. He/she is only setting up for disappointment.
