would you guys pick Ross over ivy leagues like Cornell, Duke, Chicago?

no, but only because my U-M financial aid package sucks…

RE Ross vs. Cornell, Duke, Chicago

Your post does not state undergrad or MBA level, but if you are thinking undergrad, many of the “elite” business schools are grad only–including Duke and Chicago. Out of the Ivy league, Cornell and Penn are the only schools to offer undergrad business.

When it comes to choosing among the top business schools either undergrad or graduate, none are a bad choice–I say this as a top financial officer of a public company. It is mostly a matter of personal preference. Ross is part of UM which is a large, public, Big Ten school and all the things that implies–good and bad. The others are smaller universities and some specialize in MBA only. You need to visit the school and see what fits your needs remembering that all the top schools are good choices.

One other consideration would be sometimes schools are particularly strong in one or two specialties. Chicago and Wharton are strong at Finance, Northwestern and Wharton for Marketing, Michigan and Harvard for General Management, Illinois and Texas for Accounting. These are examples, and not a comprehensive list. If you are thinking about specializing in a particular field, look for rating of top schools in that field. They might be quite different than top business schools in general.

Will we get an email either way? As in an email that says “congratulations you have been admitted into Ross for Pre-Admission” or “I’m sorry you have not been into Ross for Pre-Admission.” Or will we just get it if we are in?

I got an email and a letter in the past couple of days that talk about LSA. Does that mean that I wasn’t accepted or are they just because I will be in LSA Freshman year no matter what?

I got an LSA email this week and got into preferred admit the week before so I don’t think it means anything

Michigan has a really weird way of doing things it seems…I haven’t gotten anything LSA or Preferred yet. Did you guys get emails? Or keep checking portal?

has anyone heard anything new? if we havent heard, does that mean we didnt get in?

The Ross website says decisions by 4/1 or 4/15 depending on your initial Michigan admit date. If you have heard anything, you still will by that date.

However, I find the entire way Michigan does its admissions to be obnoxious. My daughter submitted her application in October, found out she was admitted to LSA in December, and now over three months later Ross is just trickling out decisions. That is 5 months total waiting for them to make a decision. It is just ridiculous. If I had the power to ban her from attending Michigan, I would do so just because the entire admissions process demonstrates to me the university does not give a darn about the students.

@orngblu: I agree it’s pretty frustrating. I sent my application late December (with all my other applications) and the Ivy’s are already ready to send results in a week with 30k applicants while Michigan still hasn’t given my LSA decision…let alone Ross

anyone hear anything back from Ross recently???

nope, and i’m not particularly enjoying this period of uncertainty ):
COME ON ROSS

If you guys what on preferred admission what’s the chance you guys would go?

Hey guys, got accepted to Pref Admit like a month ago. but I have to choose between Ross, WashU, Duke, UVA, and potentially whatever Ivies I get into tomorrow if any and Gtown. Is Ross worth it if you aren’t 100% sold on business? And why would you guys pick ross over any of those other options.

I still haven’t heard back. I don’t really care anymore though.

@Confusedinkc:

I believe Ross and Michigan as a whole offers a collegiate experience that, as a whole, is very unique. I know it gets beaten to death on here, but AA is a really cool city to live in with tons of things to do.

I personally enjoy Ross because although it can be somewhat of a competitive and cutthroat environment, most of the students are really nice and welcoming deep down. It is one of the top undergraduate business programs so you will have amazing opportunities during and after your enrollment. Don’t buy the “It’s not near Wall Street or a part of the Ivies and its only a public university” naysayers. Michigan is a globally respected institution and from their connections, you could go into anything you want to, and the Ross name will not put you at a disadvantage with respect to the east coast elites.

That being said, if business is not your 100% interest then what else would you like to study? The other schools you mentioned are excellent and all very different. Have you visited them? It’s funny how different campus atmospheres can be (Like WashU and Duke…)

Well I have visited all of those schools - stayed at WashU and Michigan with friends who go there. I’m probably going to Duke for Blue Devil Days, since Duke and Michigan are my top 2 right now. If I don’t study Business it’ll be some kind of IR, Economics path - a pretty liberal arts focus that gets me a job. I’m not necessarily interested in going into Finance, more going into Consulting. My dad’s an executive at Citigroup and while what he does is interesting, it’s not my ideal path. I guess I’m more asking, if I choose Ross and it’s Ross V. Duke V. Gtown - what atmospheric differences does michigan have that the other two don’t? Advantages. Just some background I’m a midwestern Indian kid who debated swam golfed sang and did all sorts of other leadership stuff in HS. Plan on Rushing and doing A Capella. that sorta stuff.

if we havent heard, its a lost cause, correct?

Decisions will be out on Monday!

^ I think Ross said 4/1 or 4/15… I don’t think EVERYONE hears back by monday. I’m guessing it is people who were accepted to Mich relatively early.

slowdown, where did you obtain this information?
