Official SAT/ACT transfer retake thread.

I’m bumping this thread so hopefully I can get an opinion on my own situation. I was lazy in high school, and had a low GPA and a 1900 on the SAT’s. In college (at UCR), I’ve changed my whole attitude and got a 3.94 the first year, and am applying as a transfer student for fall 2010 (for junior status). The main schools I’m looking at are Brown, Rice, and Columbia. Should I retake? I’m almost positive I could score much better now, but the effort and studying would be very time consuming.

^ Some schools will not accept SAT/ACT scores taken after enrolling in college. Be sure to check if the schools you want to apply to will or will not take a new score.

In my Junior year of High School (June 2008) I took the ACT with very little studying and received a 29. I retook it this past June at the end of my senior year after doing some individual studying for a couple weeks leading up to the test and I scored a 33.

@Arcadefire1027: If those schools listed will take new SAT scores, I say absolutely take it again. Honestly, you probably don’t need to put in too much study time in order to raise your score by 100+ points.

Well it looks like I have no choice but to retake. Thanks for the advice!

I’m in talks with Columbia and University of Tampa counselors. As a drama major my heart is set on Columbia for obvious locale reasons. However, I am worried about my SAT scores and my HS record. I’ve been a part time student while working full time for quite a number of years; so when I took it it was the old version. I got a 1010 combined (570V/440M), and my transcripts were not even remotely stellar with an even 2.1 weighted. I took a couple years off and worked, decided to start college and kept working. I now hold a 3.4GPA at my local Comm Coll. and have numerous professors that will vouch for my work ethic.

I know SAT’s score are the least of my worries, but for the sake of this forum: would it be worth retaking?
Math was by far the dead horse in the situation, and since the original test I’ve completed as high as College Algebra and Pre-Calc Algebra with A’s.

I know that it’s quite laughable to beleive what I’m considering, but I want it. I’ll work into the next lifetime to get it.

I have 920 out of 1600 should i retake if i transferring with over 45 credits? (to top 20 schools).

You’re kidding, right? I’m a current freshman at a community college and my SAT scores were average…like a 1500. But it was my math that brought me down since I had terrible math teachers all through middle and high school and when I transferred to a different high school, I was told I had gaps in my math. My dream is to become a physician and I would love to transfer to Duke University or a top pre-med program like Harvard. I believe that my SAT scores will affect my ability to be accepted to those places, so hearing that you’ve got accepted to Duke, Yale, and Dartmouth and you had a low SAT score makes me feel a whole lot better!
