I've been in Latin/Latin club for four years, and I'm the historian for the state branch (special circumstance sort of: Latin was canceled at my school, so I had to continue it privately, but I still won awards at conventions, meaning I'm good at it); some volunteering at a hospital; been doing violin for the last eight years, pretty involved in that; started the Young Democrats and I've done a LOT with that club this year; took Japanese outside of school for two years; am taking Chinese at community college; started the Science National Honor Society at my school, kind of do stuff with that; have done a leader in training/counselor in training thing at an equestrian camp for the last two summers (I'm going to be a paid counselor there over the winter break, in fact); I have an internship with a congressman (which I enjoy); I've tutored (kinda minor). I think that's about it. General Comments: Just more apps to finish this weekend. :/

To any people from other boards, I hope you don't take too much stock from here. There's no definite way to predict the next set of results, and you certainly need to take the statistics here with a grain of salt, if not more.

With that said, I hope you guys fare better than Stanford applicants did. I was rejected, and am currently hard at work on essays. Curiously enough, the nervousness and tension in me is flowing out and manifesting in what I hope is an amazing essay. Stanford's just one of many, and I can only hope that the other decisions aren't as..ahem..gruesome.

[li] Gender: F[/li][/ul]Other Factors: submitted arts supplement in flute General Comments: i'm freaking shaking a lot. congrats all of you who were accepted!!! and those of you who were deferred or rejected, i've gotten to know all of you through CC.. i'm thoroughly positive that some great school is going to see what's so great about you :)

I was about to go to sleep, but the results for Stanford are really disturbing me.

I'm really sorry to see so many people who got rejected to Stanford ... you guys really worked your butts off in HS, and you really didn't deserve to get a reject.

(Now I'm worrying more about Chicago ... coming this Monday ... I'm imagining what's gonna happen with MIT also b/c their applicants shot up 25% this year)

@fortify, thats the biggest ******** ive ever heard... stanford doesnt accept people becuase theyre less qualified, if you have a higher sat score than someone it means you have a higher sat score, not better essays or recs. you have no idea what these peoples essays and recs were like and id bet my left nut that they were better than yours and distinguished themselves enough to gain admittance

Haha, yet again, I find myself agreeing with GimmeStanford. If I had been rejected, I too might be initially bitter if someone who SEEMED to work less hard than me were accepted. But like he said, you just don't really know someone's full application until you see it all. You have to trust that the admissions officers are doing what's right for the school, which has stayed as amazing as it is in large part because of them.

I'll be honest, after reading these I'm a little shocked that I was deferred and not rejected. My unweighted GPA of 3.27 is obviously lower than anyone else who's posted on this board, rejected or not. I can only suppose that legacy counts for more than just a little at Stanford.

I'm just shocked by the importance URM, legacy, and simple luck might have. Is this normal for the Ivies or is Stanford outsanding in this regard?

fortify, that is bull, for reasons already stated. Plus, even stat-wise that isn't necessarily true. Some people don't have access to or the money for top-notch tutoring programs or private boarding schools. Gosh, I guess they're not good enough!

Many of the Ivies consider legacy a HUGE thing. Especially if you're rich and have crazy connections. UPenn in particular...

I think simple luck might have to do with it too. Two of my friends applied to Columbia early; the one who was a much stronger student with a much better application got deferred, while the other got accepted. Go figure.

I dont know, i think that's unfair:(
I'm first generation so obviously my parents didn't go to any Ivies - they were stuck in Communism:(
They would've loved to study there though

"What about if you got the scores without the expensive private tutoring?"

Even better. But resources are a huge influence on scores, ECs, etc. Stanford, of all schools, seems to recognize that the most. Where we may see lack of qualification, they may see untapped talent. And they'll take it.
