bliss, I’m giving the Subject tests in November as well - it does say that’s the last test date on the website for SCEA (although I’m probably not applying SCEA, or not applying at all if I get into my first choice ED, it seems like you are). I definitely think you should take them - with a school as competetive as Stanford, every little helps.

bliss, I’m in a similar situation!
I’m planning to apply SCEA. I took the SAT I for the first time in June and got a 2110. I wanted to retake it, but I’m going to use the October test date for the Subject Tests instead.

tokdoc - Haha, I’m not quite naive enough to miss that part. It’s just that under the circumstances, I wanted others’ opinions on this.

quasi - I tried to look for that on the SCEA page (about the last test date being in Nov.) but I wasn’t able to find it. Do you think you could provide a link? Thanks.

Excited - I think the difference between EA and ED is that EA isn’t binding whereas ED is…though I may be wrong. That’s just what I’ve always thought. Can anyone confirm?

jdinh - I took it in June too! 2130, though I’m not quite as happy with it (esp. after looking at c/o 2013 SCEA decisions…scary!). That’s why I’m considering the Oct. test date. I want my scores to be the highest they can be, and if I have to sacrifice the Subject Tests for a later date in order to do that, then I’m completely willing.

I’ve been lurking around Stanford’s CC forum since last summer, so it’s weird thinking that it’s our turn to stress & freak out about the application process! I’m glad to meet my fellow CC - SCEA’ers! I think we’ll get to know each other pretty well during all of this, haha.

Ooh, and (where I’m at) one more hour until July 1st! The common application becomes available! Get ready, guys…our college application process is about to start…the best of luck to each and every one of us 2014’ers!

It’s really bugging me now, but glancing over the essays, apparently they are an exact copy of last year’s or am I doing something wrong? ( New at this sorry O.O ) I apologize if this is in any way a naive remark.

xeon- No, I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. I’ve looked at the supplement, and it IS pretty much exactly the same as last year’s. That isn’t surprising since they don’t change the questions every year. As far as I know, these weren’t new last year either.

excited- Yup, I’ve got mine! But I’ve only LOOKED at the supplement…haven’t started.

I just glanced over the Common Apps for Stanford and I have a quick question. Is the Personal Essay the “Mother-of-all-Essays” or are the Supplements the more important ones. I understand both are important but I was just curious which one weighs more? O.O

^Honestly I think they’re all equally important. They’re all designed to show some aspect of an individual, so it’s hard to say which aspect would be superior, etc. The combined content of all the essays would give adcoms an overall image of what an applicant is like, therefore we shouldn’t put a specific emphasis on any one essay. Although for practical purposes, the personal statement is used for all colleges that accept the common application and not only Stanford, so if you’re looking at other schools as well, it’d be wise to make sure that one is extra perfect.
Hope that answers your question.

personal statement is most important because you’ll be submitting that multiple times to basically all the top schools. Ad coms recognize that this essay will be reused, and as such will place greater importance on it. In fact, I personally believe that they really only read over the personal statement carefully, I doubt the Supplemental essays have much importance.

^plus in terms of length, the personal statement essay gives you more to work with, at least in terms of length

Supplemental essays (approx 250 words each)
Personal statement (virtually limitless-- but it should stay between 500 to 1000 words; any longer and you might make the adcoms a little annoyed…)

bear with me with the cliched “chancing”. I failed to resist. ;)

hypothetically say someone was a urm (VERY underrepresented - third world nation status), has good grades, okay (relatively acceptable) test scores, has summer internships every year, is going to receive recommendations by someone who works at the school of his choice, a professor’s recommendation from said school as well, has one sibling who graduated from his school of choice, and other that will attend next spring, has many ECs (well-rounded, etc) , writes great essays…

haha…this is what my competition looks like…eeep.

good luck to you guys -I understand how nervous you guys are as I just went through this myself!

if you freak out easily, it might be a good idea to stay away from chance me threads and CC for a while and then come back. i made the decision to stay away while writing my essays and doing the applications (unless i needed to ask a question) as i freak out easily and all the other panicking ppl on CC were NOT helping my stress levels XD.

but to be honest, I didn’t think I had a shot at ALL. so don’t give up hope and best of luck! :)

Im definately going to apply, because it is top in all three fields i want to study–math, physics and phycology–but seeing all these indivudals here that are applying. My chances seem extra dim
