Thanks for the replies. I agree with what IMGDAD is saying…:)

My daughter is not truly interested in the combined med program but wants to do medicine the 4 + 4 route [despite me initially discouraging her actively for both this approach and for deciding to do medicine…:)]. So she is more interested in hearing from her regular UGs than the combined med programs. I guess it is the parents [not all, but I am guilty] who perhaps stress out more than their children…:)

midhelper - checking spam is not a bad thing if Union told you the app has been forwarded to AMC. AMC gives you one week and the next letter you get is one saying your app has been cancelled. Someone I knew had to go back and write a long letter asking for another chance in order to get it sent again.

RPI sent me the AMC supplement yesterday. For me, it’s due on 12/30, so they give you exactly 7 days after you receive the e-mail notification to complete. I wouldn’t worry about running out of time… as long as you check your e-mail regularly!

@thejerseygirl, congratulations!! Do you know if the first prompt question is specific to research and what not?

My parents are equally concerned as all of you, they just can’t wait. I keep having to tell them that some of the notifications don’t come until mid-january >.< hahah My dad really wants me to go with Siena/AMC.

Did anyone apply to Ursinus/Drexel and is going to one of the three interview dates in january?

@tamtiger, this is funny. I must admit that I was not that upbeat about my son’s applications to begin with because I did not think he would get very far with his less than desired stats. That is why when he told me he wanted to pursue the combined program, I “encouraged” him to go for the BS/DO programs that are not as competitive. However, now when I see that he is actually doing very well so far (compared to his sister who had much better stats) and has a reasonable shot of getting into a BS/MD program, it has got me rather excited. Despite the less than desired stats, he has got into a guaranteed BS/DO program, interview at UMKC, nominated by Robert Morris to Drexel, and interview at SBU for the SBU/GW program, in addition to a lot of scholarships from the UG schools for all the programs, except UMKC, that he has applied to.

I think girls may have a disadvantage with combined programs because many do research and qualify for such programs. So many of them are weeded out during the process. PACT for UTD/Southwestern had 30/40 girls being interviewed. I found people with 33 ACT scores not getting an interview.

tamtiger - it is not a bad thing going 4+4 route, especially if there are financial constraints in paying for med schools.

Thanks. We have the same problem regarding stats. Higher ACT scores, lower GPA with a very rigorous course load and lots of ECs. It is humbling to see the high scores, perfect GPA and the amount of extra curriculars these kids have. Congratulations to all of them [those active on CC, and those lurking on CC] for their hard work, hope they all get what they are looking for.

My daughter applied at the last minute to combined med programs only because I asked her to apply [well I bribed her to apply…:)]. We started with just 2 programs and I eventually managed/negotiated to get her to apply for 4 programs. Her approach was, I will only apply to those programs where I will be happy spending my 4 years of UG. So have to wait and see if she will get a chance to even write a supplement…:)

Based on the invites to write the supplements, it looks like you need a 4.0 GPA or closer to it, to get an invite for the supplement…:(, or you need a great essay to make up for it.
Well, just have sit tight and start counting the stars, until we know yes or no for these programs.

I think it had less to do with stats because otherwise, I wouldn’t have gotten this far. Pretty sure all my stats look like blergh relative to other applicants but I made my overall application somehow look impressive I guess. I have no idea how these decisions are being made but that’s a okay with me!

My parents will disown me if I don’t get at least a few and my friends/teachers joke everyday that harvard is my safety school (ah, the pressure).

You are correct in saying just stats or great stats with great ECs alone will be enough to get you in to these programs.

You need to have the magic connection with the reader of your application.

If it is of any consolation for you, last year there was a girl with exactly your stats and she got in to 3 combined med programs and she chose the one that best fit her needs.

So you will do just fine, BTW, Harvard can wait…:)

@jerseygirl Congrats!! @tamtiger 4.0?? Well my D did have 4.0 2yrs ago when she applied but my S does not. ugh.

Does anyone know if there is a chance that if your application is forwarded by Union to AMC can AMC still just choose not to send you the supplement or does everyone forwarded eventually get the supplement?

My understanding is that if the UG college forwards it, then AMC will send the supplement to you. AMC decides only on who and how many to invite for interview.

There are higher numbers looking into it and many have the application ready to go because there are more of them doing research.

Simply put, more girls are applying and that leads to much more competition among them. More of them are involved in activities that are conducive to BS/MD applications.

@yesdee, I think what texaspg said is correct. I do not think texaspg meant doing research places the student at a disadvantage. It is just that there is so many more qualified and driven girls than boys. I remember when I took my daughter for her interviews at BU and at AMC, there were definitely a lot more girls than boys. If you are Asian, you may also be disadvantaged since there are just so many competitive Asians applying to these programs.

My kid applying to BSMD programs is an Asian girl. What a competition it is. It’s fun to read the posts in this forum to get more information. Thanks to all. :)

Have you seen those Asian girls. They are all like perfect ACT SAT score producers. They are disadvantaged otherwise all the ivy leagues and combined programs will be just Asian girls…

@punjabigenius, you are correct. The “discrimination” also applies to the Ivy leagues UG school. It is just so much more difficult for Asians to get in. The part about being a girl is just because generally girls are a lot more driven at this age then boys.
