***Official Thread for 2014 BSMD applicants***

A friend of mine said that Malaysian universities are like 75% girls now. She thought it was because of the school system (sitting still in class and learning) is more suitable for females than the more hyper boys at the younger grades, which then carries to more success in later years. Not sure how true it was though.

When my D interviewed at AMC 2 yrs ago there were only 2 girls and the rest were all boys. None of the candidates were Asian, all but 2 were Indian though.

Not to mention a few national science awards, some original research oh and btw throw in the piano for the city orchestra and some national level sports awards. I mean you would stand no chance against that for competition.

FYI, there are many Asian girls and boys who didn’t get excellent SAT and GPA. As I know, some asian kids in my church got depressed and discouraged because of the stereo-type. There are alternative ways to be successful in life without perfect GPA/SAT which is just for going to college.

@Dad2013
i agree VERY VERY much with this…im an asian and I very well know of the stereotype that is placed on us (im a guy too) regarding scores, GPA, etc… And not all Asians are in that category cause I know so many that are good at school but are WOW outside of school in things like Art, Music, etc but not necessairly have the best numbers school wise… and I think that the stereotype hurts us in all applications not just UG or BS/MD… thats why I did whatever I could on my UG ivies apps to separate myself from all those stereotypes (except for good scores and good grades :wink: )…

Neomed vs Baylor ?
Guys what would be your take? I mean 6 year vs 8 year?. Is Baylor worth of spending 2 more years?

thanks

Baylor medicine is…

Please think about why you need to rush to get a MD degree ? Life is long and an education is a process to be matured with whatever future profession he/she has. My recommendation is 8 years, not even 7 years.

Baylor college. Of. Medicine is one of the most least expensive med schools in the country. It is an extraordinary med school with tons of opportunity… U shud Def Def do Baylor and rice

Before we get too far in this discussion, I don’t believe it is a real one at this point.

It is extremely difficult to get into Baylor/Baylor or Rice/Baylor. At least one kid this year made both interviews and did not make it while getting into YS/NU-HPME.

I thought Northwestern-HPME is also extremely difficult case, too. It means it’s hard to estimate who is qualified for a BSMD program.

@dad
Based on my research and experience wth others in the category the hardest to get into is washu. Then plme Baylor and hpme northwestern. Then the rest

"I thought Northwestern-HPME is also extremely difficult case, too. It means it’s hard to estimate who is qualified for a BSMD program. "

It is not easy to make it there either but essentially what we are saying here is that people who look highly qualified on paper get cut when they get to interview. It is not a given that any one candidate will get into any of these programs and past success, i.e., getting into one BS/MD somewhere does not predict future admission anywhere else.

Has anybody applied to the University of Toledo BS/MD or Bacc/MD programs? I’m wondering when we should be receiving word about interviews. I have been accepted to the UG but have not yet heard about the program. Any help would be appreciated! :)

Son got rejected from Union without AMC interview. I suspect this is only the first of many more to come. Disappointed but not surprised.

I am sorry to hear that. At least he has three interviews coming up soon. That should cheer him up.

Did they send you a denial email or was it snail mail?

I think you are still waiting on RPI and Sienna. May be he will have better luck in those schools.

Thanks.

@tamtiger, thank you. I personally do not think he would get either Sienna or RPI. Based on his stats, I think he has already done much better than I had expected. Yes, he has the following interviews coming up: UMKC, SBU for SBU/GW, and USciences for USciences/TCMC. His applications have been forward to Drexel by Robert Morris, and he has submitted his Drexel supplemental to a number of UG schools. One saving grace is that he already has the Gannon/LECOM BS/DO in hand.

Guys I didn’t receive anything from Rutgers Newark program, is that a good thing? I got accepted to the UG and got into the honors program at New Brunswick

Anyone here applying to the BU 7yr med? It says that I am missing Recs even though they are uploaded on the Common App

I had my NJIT interview and she said that she would forward it to the medical school!

Got into the Drexel UG and Honors College with a hefty scholarship! Still have to hear from them on the Accelerated Medical School Part!

@giants1996

Nothing from Rutgers yet. Some people already heard back but they were rejections.

BU requires 3 EXTRA teacher EVALUATIONS along with whatever you submitted for the Common App. I found out 2 days before the deadline and shipped the evaluation letters for overnight shipping. It was never explicitly stated anywhere except a certain portion of the website. BU didn’t do a good job with that.

Nothing from NJIT but they said that we would be notified a bit late. I got a pretty good scholarship from them.

I haven’t heard anything from Drexel yet. Not even from the undergrad. My Drexel portal says my file is complete and under review so I just have to wait…

@ IMGDAD
How does Union, RPI, Sienna let candidates know if they have not been selected for their programs?

Email or snail mail? How did you hear from Union? We are still waiting to hear from RPI…:). Very likely a rejection, still helps to know how they communicate the bad news…

I called BU several times and they never told me this :(. I even made a checklist of what they wanted.
