***Official Thread for 2016 BSMD applicants***

@HS2DirectMed congrats! Why are you going to more interviews at lesser programs when you already have the best acceptances?

@J2H239 My stats are mediocre. I am pretty sure I am the least qualified candidate for the interview invitation. I did Science reseach for 3 years and I want to continue it during my UG years. Plus I am an artist/writer and I am not ready to give that up yet. I applied to BS/MD for an assurance not for a shortcut so I genuinely wrote about them in my essays. It didn’t work for PPSP and REMS but I have no regret.

Hey Everyone,

I would like some help from you all today. I have gotten into two programs so far, and both are near the top for me. One of them is the 7-year BS/MD program at Augusta U/Medical College of GA, and the other is VCU’s BS/MD program. Here is a breakdown:

  1. Augusta U/Medical College of GA 7-year program: 3.7 overall and 3.7 BCPM GPA needed to be maintained. MCAT is required, and it is the average of the previous year's matriculants (510 from what I calculated is what the group that took it this year needed to get). However, as a GA resident who got higher grades, I get the Zell Miller scholarship, which makes education at a public institution (such as Augusta U), free. Therefore, we are only paying for the 4 years of medical school.
  2. VCU/VCU SOM 8-year program - 3.5 overall needed to be maintained and an MCAT of 502 is required. I got some scholarship money but not full. However, as an Honors College student, there are some extra benefits offered, such as research opportunities, and I can also major in something other than science. Don't get me wrong, I love the sciences; I just wanted to explore other interests as well!

Keeping all the factors in mind, does anyone have any idea on how I can decide, or what would be the best choice, such as if deciding between cost, and better requirements? Anyone have any say on what is the better program? Please advise!

@KBS815 Honestly, VCU/VCU because August U is not a great school.

Thanks @1CRYZX for your input. Another point for consideration: AU/MCG would be about 130k over 7 years, while VCU could be almost double that if not more. Sorry I forgot to put that in! Also, can you all highlight a few points for why VCU or why Augusta U would be better?

@KBS815 I can not comment on the price because I don’t know your financial situation. However, if you can afford VCU I would go for it. VCU is ranked slightly higher than MCG so that is something to weight. That difference is not huge though. However, VCU undergrad is much better the August U. Your likely will not be challenged at Augusta and won’t have that much of a college experience.

hey guys, just curious, has anyone applied to MIT here? if so, what are your thoughts on premed at MIT
Ive heard so many bad things but just not sure at this point
plus decisions come out next Monday, yikes

@KBS815 , do you have other options? If not, I would go to AUMCG.

Thank you @1CRYZX and @J2H239 for your opinions and input.

D accepted to VCU- GMED. Email came in at 4.45 pm (EST)

Disclosure: I applied 2 cycles ago and am currently at a prestigious combined program. I was offered 12 interviews but only attended 7 because I already got into the best programs before the other 5 interviews and I did not want to hurt other students.

@1CRYZX that’s good to know for future help! (Kinda sounded a bit arrogant over text but I hope no one gets upset like I did at first haha)

@bsmdacceptme I meant the opposite. There’s a reason I turned down so many interviews, I didn’t want to steal spots from other applicants when I wasn’t going to use them. I also withdrew from programs that had waitlist like RPI and Union so other applicants could get those spots.

@1CRYZX This is great suggestion by you. Especially, if very successful candidates like @HS2DirectMed or @88Mom88 and many other silent observers who benefited from them forum, now that they have been selected already in high end programs like REMS as well as mid tier ones like AMC (RPI, Union, Seinna) program. it will be highly unlikely now for them to see go in mid tier AMC ones. then they should definitely consider letting AMC program know right away about there intention of not attending. that way AMC can release those seats for other people, while they still have time to release second batch of results. I hope all those higher end program accepted applicants and other applicant accepted in other preferable programs consider doing it, especially for ones where they give out rolling admission or waitlist.

So agree with @captchachah and @1CRYZX. These candidates are very aware of the competition and are ready to withdraw as soon as the more personal financial details are flushed out with that ONE school, which maybe in the works already. FYI: some of the candidates may be outstanding, but have personal struggles with financing their education and may have to choose depending on their aid and parents affordability. I say this although I know many on this forum may not have too many financial constraints.

Didn’t get Stony Brook interview - did anyone here get it?

@fifteenpapers did you get email notification?

@tunetheday nope - came snail mail. Started off with something like “Congrats for your acceptance to SBU! However, we are unable to offer you
”

Does anyone know how many high school seniors are accepted each year into all the combined BA/BS/MD programs in the country? What is overall acceptance rate into all programs in the whole country? For example do we have 400 positions in all programs and 380 students are accepted I total.

@narkor Guesstimate 800-1000, roughly 3-4% of total MD students admitted per year. Not following your second part of the question. The number of offers should be much higher to 1000-1100 to matriculate 800 students in the BS/MD program.
