***Official Thread for BSMD Applicants 2018***

@GoldenRock,

I was referring to truly Non binding vs semi/pseudo Non binding, if I may call that :))

Has a facebook group for the RPI/AMC program already been made?

@rk2017 , @GoldenRock , @NoviceDad - thank you all for valuable input and guidance. We’ll double check the requirements about opting out. We’re trying to figure out if there is another student from local area who may have opted out from the UIC GPPA. One last question - I ignored to mention that she also has 3 full rides but just for undergrad programs. Should we even consider one of those even if it’s not a BS/MD program?

@2beDoc,

Regarding the full rides without BS/MD option, it depends on at least two things, how comfortable are you in letting “the bird in hand” go and second, where these full rides are. As people have pointed out some of these places are “elephants grave yard” (from Lion King?)

@dadofd,

I get the same feeling too about UIC apply out , but the policies keep changing. As an example, I thought, they used to allow students to finish even in less than 7 years till few years ago, but now stopped it. So always better to get direct answer from them instead of assuming.

@GoldenRock,

Forgot to mention, Good example you have given about the apply out option and good luck to your DD!

Hi - I am new to this thread. My son has following offers:

  1. BU SMED ($20K scholarship for undergraduate)
  2. OU Medical Humanities Scholars Program (National Merit 5 years of college tuition free)
  3. FAU BS MD (National Merit 5 years of college tuition free)
  4. Augusta/Medical College of GA BS MD (Free undergraduate due to GA resident)
  5. Mercer in Macon/GA BS MD (Free undergraduate due to presidential scholarship)

We are debating between BU AND OU BS MD. Although, OU is 8 year program (4+4), due to all the AP’s credit he will be able to do undergrad in 3 years.

Here are some of the factors we are looking for:

  1. Med school requirements (GPA and MCAT)
  2. Chances of getting residency in a surgical field
  3. College Campus life (OU is more of a traditional college campus), also dorms
  4. OU has option to apply out, whereas BU does not
  5. Cost - it is a factor, but bottom of pile

Based on above, any comments/thoughts from anyone?

@gabsmd See my posts related to OU specific details in this thread. You can check my handle and see replies OR search my handle anme in this thread using the search option.

Since GA programs are local, I am not familiar with them. So not sure if they are better than BU. FAU will not consider given the choices you have since that has interview later. Though OU may cost little less (if you do 3 years option), and OU students also will be able to rotate and get surgical residency, I think BU is a better option, though it may be harder compared to OU and binding. If he wants to balance out life OU may be relatively lighter than BU. GL.

@2beDoc
If you try to op out and try in traditional path
THIS IS NICE GIFT FROM SOMEONE ELSE but i saved it for it was so cool

For those contemplating on the traditional route to medical school- here is a table ( I created manually last year for my DD ) with avg old MCAT and avg UG GPA, LizzyM score = LizzyM score is defined as (GPA*10)+MCAT and may contain a +1 or -1 modifier in certain situations, and new Equivalent MCAT(approximation)

Anyone on this thread aware if there is a FB page for U PITT GAP for the high school class of 2018? If not
my student will start one
thanks.

@gabsmd,

Between OU and BU I think it essentially boils down to point 4. Does your son intend to take another shot at applying out after 2 or 3 years? If so OU. BU has a great world wide name but is a tough grading school (even for the SMED students) and he can’t apply out if he wants without losing the seat.

@gabsmd If cost is not a critical factor, I think BU is the pick here. Sure the flexibility to apply out at OU is nice, but BU is a solid enough med school as it is that one shouldn’t feel the need to apply out.

@bearchichi
Good data to start, but the latest and most updated information regarding each medical program can be found at MSAR. One can subscribe to that official data bank to ascertain pertinent information even for Drexel and BU programs.

Direct BS MD Programs by Todd Johnson (combined programs)
MSAR data bank (traditional programs)

Good luck everyone.

Is there already a facebook page for the Drexel BSMD program?

@gabsmd , IMO BU is the right choice. We visited BU campus last summer and talked to their premed adviser and students. They have a solid program, resources and BU school of medicine has strong reputation and rank. BU SMED was our first choice but we did not get it. Best

Thank you @upstream and @bearchichi. For those who are not sure about where to find MSAR (Medical School Admission Requirements), here is a link: https://apps.aamc.org/msar-ui/#/landing GL

I am fairly new to this thread. I wanted to know more about the Washington & Jefferson BA/MD program with Temple. Please share your thoughts

@gabsmd My 2cents, go with OU( free tuition for 5 years). Invest the money you will spend on BU and use it for Medical College. At the medical school level, it all depends on how well you perform in USLME1/2/3 exams. We have a physician in the family. Most posters here are just speculating about Medical Schools.

@MiCh408 I agree with @rk2017 , Emory pre-med is very difficult.
