Does anybody know anything about rowing at UBC?

Hi does anyone know about work study at UBC? I know most American colleges offer it but I don’t think I have come across anything when looking into UBC?

@shanoid1 - i dont know much about rowing but heres a website [Vancouver Richmond Rowing and Paddling UBC Boathouse - Home of the UBC Thunderbirds](http://www.ubcboathouse.com/)

@islandbrunette I actually know about work study, it was brought up in my information event. the student said she knew work study jobs around campus that went up to 20 bucks an hour, and that shes been doing research under a prof for 3 years. I 1000% plan on doing work study, and research as soon as possible. heres a website that will explain more.

[Welcome - Career Services](http://www.students.ubc.ca/careers/index.cfm)

@yellowapple - Many thanks for the link!

I have one small question though, does anyone know when I will hear back? I know I’ve asked this before, but I’m getting really really anxious now! All my materials were sent in by the end of March, so does anybody have any idea when I might get a decision? All of the next four years are resting on this!

AHHHHHHH!

i think they make lots of intl’s wait to get a response. id call the admissions office and ask them where your application is right now, like if is been reviewed, whats going on? if you give them your student number they can figure all that out. and if you tell them that your intl and need a decision soon because all other schools have close deadlines, they usually speed it up a bit, good luck! i know, i hated the anxious waiting too

Offer of admission to UBC! With the $500 PES aswell :)

I am literally bursting!

Thanks for the advice yellowapple, luckily I didn’t need to do that because I received my decision 18 hours later!

:D :D

Congraaaats!!! :d

wow sooo many more people since I last entered the thread!! I hope we’ll all meet up at jumpstart! (yes I begged my dad and he said it was ok for me to go)

yeah theres work study and work learn for intl’s.

congratz shanoid! I cant do jumpstart but I’ll see you all this fall!
I wanna know where ill be staying between totem and place vanier.

A Bit late on posting, but Admitted into both Arts and Computer Science at Vancouver! I can’t believe it, I’m really excited!! Didn’t know if I would get in, I was really nervous. Planning on doing Jumpstart.

Now to try and decide which one I should accept.
Interested in Computer Science, but also other things like International Buisness, and Asian Studies, maybe economics–or other things… Hm. I’ll have to give it some thought.

Correction to my previous post! Turns out I received a 7500 scholarship too this morning!

wow, congratz on the 7500 scholarship!

I’m so glad to have found this site; I used **************.net for all of my American schools but it lacked information on UBC.

I’m from Chicago, and I’m almost certain I’ll attend UBC next year!

I applied to UBC, Lewis & Clark in Portland, Reed in Portland, Puget Sound in Tacoma, Evergreen in Olympia, U of Chicago, Wesleyan U, Pomona in Claremont, and Claremont Mckenna (also in Claremont).

My top contenders after it was all said and done were Reed, Lewis & Clark, Puget Sound, and UBC. But since I am a Canadian citizen, UBC tuition is only 4k. With my scholarship, the school is under $2,000. Compare that to Reed at almost $50,000 a year…

As for my stats, I have a 3.7 GPA and a 33 ACT score. I never took the SAT? It was neither advised nor necessary for me.

I’m actually in Vancouver as I write this, I have been visiting the school and the area for the past few days. It is simply incredible. The university is twenty minutes from downtown- mind you, I’m not saying twenty minutes from the city, for campus lies IN the city. Being a huge city girl, this means a lot to me. However, I was looking forward to the nature up here and was not disappointed. Do you prefer ocean, mountains, or temperate rainforest? Check, check, check. In all, the school’s surroundings are a fantastic mix of city culture and breathtaking beauty.

Speaking of city culture… I am so enthralled by this city. While its downtown areas and Marine drive are certainly ritzy, I was overjoyed to see the gritty city action that, I think, makes a city an interesting environment. Vancouver is the junkie capital of Canada because of its milder climate, but this makes for incredibly fascinating- spooky, sad, yes, but mostly fascinating- slums. Its Chinatown, too, is scary and beautiful and quite extraordinary.

Enough of rave reviews. Here is my concern/a question for Vancouver natives:
Coming from Chicago, and having gone to school in its downtown, I am aware of the importance of diversity. Immersion in different cultures has made such a grand impact on my life and is something I would miss greatly were it gone.
I know Vancouver has a strong Asian population and great (though underprivileged) First People culture, but on my UBC tour I saw literally two black people and not one Latino. In fact, I haven’t seen any Latinos in my four day stay! Is this typical of Vancouver/BC?

Thanks, and sorry for the essay…

I didn’t mind the essay. If you’ve read any of the back pages on this thread, I’ve written quiiiite a few myself! But anyway, I too was on the lookout for hispanic and black people…and saw none. Well, I saw like four african guys, but no african-american or african canadians. I didn’t see a single hispanic person. ):

I’m sure there are some though, and next year there’s gonna be at least one more haha, I’m half black half puerto rican. :)

yeah that was my one and only concern, thatd there probably isnt much diversity, and theres no statistics anywhere indicating so on the website. since my high school has so much diversity, didnt know if itd be a easy transition. but im african american canadian lol, and thats one more person aswell. :)

haha yay! we takin’ over? haha, not quite. but anyway, it’s not like there’s a preponderance of a single race though, and that’s good. However, the school iiiiis predominantly caucasian and asian (including indian people).

It’s all good though! :)

Ridiculous amount of diversity in this region-- it just doesn’t look like “American” diversity (framed around people of African or Latino descent). What might look like “Chinese” to you is actually a wide spectrum of folks from HK, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and so on-- of varying degrees of acculturation (from recent immigrants to first and second generation students). In addition, tons of students from the Mideast, India and Europe as well. Vast majority of students speak more than two languages, and many would describe themselves as belonging to more than one culture.

Yellow where in Africa are you from? My neighbour was born and raised in Kenya and is thinking about going to UBC.

im nigerian, i’d tell your friend to go for it, i saw people on the prospects board on facebook who are actually applying from gambia.

FYI everyone, jump start registration is open!

at first i wasn’t gonna go because of money, then i found out that i could so i was gonna go, but now i dunno if i wanna go…ahhh haha regardless, it’s open so sign up because i hear it fills up quickly!
