Things will be worked out, just be sure to get with a counselor and either call or message uci. I would look for summer session options, or alternative classes. Now conversational Spanish doesn’t sound like a basic intro class that fulfills the language requirement, but I don’t know why you are taking it so please tell us. If it’s not part of your major and is an elective things will be easy to iron out, and if it’s more than this it can still be resolved by being proactive.

How much does your major gpa weigh in? Im
majoring in history and have a 3.6 in just history classes alone but overall i have a 2.9. I got an F in stats which lowered my overall gpa a lot but im retaking that now and my grades have improved a lot from summer 2016 and fall 2016 it may be too late for the people reading my application to take into consideration but compared too how my grades were when i first started it is an upward trend and its the most recent. I was kind of hoping that they would be like o well hes majoring in history and in the classes hes taken related to history like english and also history itself and the classes hes struggled with has been math and science which arent that related to history
I bet you get in, odds seem to be in your favor.
Well it depends on major, and I don’t know what the school that is in charge of the history department requires. For my school, social ecology, a 3.0 was required. At this point they will make a choice based on your initial application with grades pre fall, and based on updated grades from fall. I say update your uc tap with your current classes that are in progress, so if they check they see you are retaking it, and I suggest you message your admission counselor in the admission portal, tell them what’s up. They might be fine with things like you say, but I suggest you call the school or research about gpa requirements. Worst case you may need to talk to admissions and see what they can do if a 3.0 is required. Did you apply elsewhere too? Also, good job turning it around, that’s a big deal to admissions.
can you give some more info on the admission counselor part and what i should tell them? Two of the hisory classes i took was this past fall (2016) and i updated my application with my fall grades. I just really hope they take in consideration my major and classes related to it because ive done well in all of those i just screwed myself early on and am paying for it now. Thanks for all you help it is much appreciated. Ive applied to all ucs except merced and i applied to most csus. My absolute #1 is Irvine it is my dream school and it sucks that i can change the past but im hoping that i didnt do too much damage that i cant get into Irvine. My #1 CSU is San Marcos but i dont think ill get accepted because they are impacted and have recieved 10,000 more applications than last fall and priority is given to the local area applicants and i have hear of people being rejected just for being out of the local area. Sorry for the long post
also pre fall 2016 grades i had a 2.6 and with the fall grades it went up to a 2.9 (the F from early on is killing my gpa and the improved one wont show until after admission decions are already handed out because i am retaking that class now)
Do you have a “my admission” portal or login for UCI? I forget when they gave us access to them but check your email and see if u got anything with instructions to set it up. You might just type my admission uci into google and see if u get the portal link to set up. From here you can message the admission counselor. The other option is to call admissions and ask to talk to someone. The school of Humanities houses the history dept. they require a 2.7 gpa and that you pass all major requirements which may include stats, check assist.id say it’s like 50/50 you get in. You have a lower GPA and I saw 3.0 applicants waitlisted for history, who knows why though maybe they got in though who knows. I think you have enough going for you to get in though, so I suggest talking to uci about this and getting their take.
Page 121 of fall 2016 official uci transfer thread has a list of accepted gpas and so do pages after that, fyi
i have the portal login im just struggling trying to find out how to contact admission counselor but when i do what should i say? And what is the criteria for the waitlist? How does someone get on it?
ok thank you so much for your help
So when you are on “My Admission” https://services.admissions.uci.edu:8443/cgi-bin/myadmission.cgi
Go to where it says “Message Center” click the blue messenger center hyperlink.
Now click “Compose New Message”
Choose one of the options, maybe low GPA grade report, change in course schedule, or other. then click GO
Here you briefly describe what your concern is, and when you are done hit post message.
It may take a little while for them to reply to you.
You can call admissions and once on, press 0 to get the operator, if there is a wait you can ask to be called back when they are available 949-824-6703
As for what you should say… I suggest you say that you really struggled with math, and that one stats class really brought down your GPA. Say you are scheduled to take the class again and you have been working with a tutor and have developed some new study skills that should help you to pass the class. Say you are confident you will pass it, that your grades have been on an upward trajectory ever since, and that you have learned a lot from the experience but don’t want it to hold you back from your dream of attending UCI.
You gotta understand that a ton of people struggle with math, it’s not for everyone, and actually males have an easier time that females with math just because of how our brains are composed. Our brains have more white brain matter which is more about axons (speed across brain networks) women have greater amounts of grey matter which is comprised of cell bodies (concentration, memory, judgement etc) Plus a lot of people of both sexes in their teens and early 20s are still growing in this regard, and many struggle with classes like stats.
My point is that it’s normal to struggle with math, especially stats. Now if you are a Saddleback College or Irvine Valley College student, or ANYONE here is and needs advice on what math professors are best, please let me know. Admissions will likely understand and give you a shot if you are proactive and tell them what is up.
Your major: Computer Science
Your transferable GPA (UC Transferable courses are all that counts) 3.27
Your major GPA 3.3 ish
Lower Divs: just need discrete and data structures which I’m taking now in spring
You EC: some volunteer, worked since I was 18(24 now)
Schools applied for and the status of accepted, waitlisted, rejected, pending: CSULB CPP CSULA (accepted) CSUF UCSD UCI UCR UCB
Personal Statements (Were they reviewed by a counselor, tutor, or UCI transfer rep?) if so, did they come out ok? They came out great, really nicely worded and edited plenty of times. Super confident.
I also have a child, am Latino, and did very poorly in my HS and first year at CCC.
i sent the message just waiting now… thanks for your insight and help with everything i really appreciate it
This is going to sound lame, but am I ok in the application process? I just activated my UCI ID b/c it just slipped under the email radar until now. Did I need to do anything deadline-wise from Dec to now, or does Irvine not require applicants to do much? I already did the Academic Update from the UC App, which works with all UC schools that one applies to.
you are good man there has been nothing yet
Long Run, if I recall correctly, it was just the update that was required which included sending unofficial transcripts to UCI for me. Not sure if you were emailed about that, but check your UCI email to see if admissions requested unofficial transcripts if you did not send those. Beyond that and just keeping UCTAP up to date with your classes you guys should be good till admission decisions are released. For my cohort I think we started hearing back for the first crop around mid April. Just monitor your UCI email and also log onto your myadmission portal to see if any messages are indicated from admissions.
I need some insight for my situation. I applied for fall 2017 admissions at UCI and also tagged with a 3.5 gpa. My major is computer science and I will have completed all the necessary prerequisites to transfer for the major by the end of this spring. The issue I have is my academic history. I am in my 9th semester in JC due to the fact that I did absolutely awful in 4 of my first 5 semesters. I performed so poorly that I was placed on academic probation at the first college I attended. The reason for this poor performance was because I had to work a lot of hours at the time. I should have not attended school during this time but my parents would have been disappointed in me if I dropped out. Right around 4 semesters ago I didn’t need to work as much and since have performed excellent in my academics. I made up every single bad grade I received at the first college I attended except for one F which is for a non-Uc transferable course. I am also in good academic standing at the first college since I made up nearly every class I failed. Though what worries me is the whole situation in general. The Ws and Fs I received are still going to be in my transcript. I literally have like 9 Ws, 1 FW (made up), 4 Fs (made up every one except for the non transferable course), and 1 D (made up). Though since then my grades have been outstanding. I have received nothing but As and Bs since. My Uc transferable GPA is currently a 3.5. I explained the reasoning for this poor performance in the application. My TAG also did not get rejected, actually, I don’t even know if it got accepted. I just received a message explaining what I need to do in my last 2 semesters a couple weeks later on the website where I submitted the TAG form. I am wondering if it is highly plausible that I will be rejected due to the poor start I had in JC? Thanks.
CCC transfer
Transfer GPA: 3.4/3.42 (possible chance it might go up to 3.5 after spring semester)
Major GPA: Not sure what my major GPA would come out as, but I will fulfill IGETC after this spring semester and other courses that were recommended for each school from assist.org.
Schools applied: UCLA, UCSD, UCI, and UCR (all pending, under review); no CSUs
TAG: UCI - art
Major(s): Art (UCI); Visual Arts - Media (UCSD); Theatre, Film, and Digital Production (UCR); Design/Media Arts (UCLA)
Also submitted an overall 4 supplement reviews for UCSD, UCR, and UCLA. No supplement was required for the Art major at UCI.
ECs (Extracurriculars/activities/experience): volunteer work on MLK Jr. day for about 6 years, editor for high school publications, was in AVID in high school, participated in church activities, clubs, and even took on a leadership role during a church event, and work as a caregiver for 2 years already. Not really involved with any of my current school’s clubs.
Personal Statements: I didn’t have it reviewed by anyone, so I am bit worried about my essays. Although I did briefly mention about how my volunteer work and being in publications led up to me majoring in art.
Also, when will we be notified if we get accepted/rejected for the TAG? I just want to know what my chances are at this point. I got rejected from CSUF last year, which was my 2nd time being rejected from them as an out-of-local transfer and as a freshman all the way back in senior year, so I’m wondering if I have a chance for the UCs for fall 2017. Thanks!
I think you have a good chance kay31, especially with tag. Mid April was when it happened last year
