I went to my CC for 7 years and had tons of Ws and Cs some Ds and Fs too. I used academic renewal where I could, and highlighted end the vast changes in my academics of the past versus present. You made up all the bad grades you could and have a 3.5, mine was a 3.3. UCs unlike CSUs look at the whole picture, so your transformation will be noted. I think you stand a good chance of getting in.
Thanks.
I had one more question regarding admissions. So I just found out that I am missing one class to satisfy the transfer requirement for ucI as a major in computer science. It’s the 2nd part to C++. Everything else including my igetc is completed. I was wondering if my chances of transferring are doomed… ?
Okay so I did some research and found out that the reason why I am suddenly missing a class is because in the new articulation agreement of 16-17 on assist, they added a line in the 2nd requirement for the computer science major stating that introductory programming classes do not fulfill the requirement. But in the 15-16 agreement it doesnt say anything about that. That is the agreement that I stuck to. I didn’t check assist for a while since I had wrote down all the necessary steps for me to transfer on paper. So was I suppose to follow the new 16- 17 agreement or will I be fine since it was implemented last fall which was around the time we applied ?
Usually it would tell you if you can use the older requirements to fulfill the requirements. For example, if you look at Electrical Engineering on assist, it says you can use the previous year’s requirements because that major is pretty hefty. I think for CS, they’re going to want you to finish the courses because the requirements are pretty basic. If you can, I suggest you finish the second part.
If you go to this website, https://admissions.uci.edu/apply/transfer/requirements.php
It says for engineers that they would honor the previous year’s requirements, although it doesn’t say that for the school for Donald Bren.
Yeah it doesnt say anything about them honoring the previous agreement on assist for computer science. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to complete the second part before the end of this spring semester. Do you suggest I contact admissions about my dilemma? Or is there no hope for me to be admitted now…
Thanks.
Honestly don’t lose hope, you’re GPA is pretty high and I think you’ll still be pretty competitive amongst other students. Although the major preparations say “Required for admission”, they still consider you as a candidate to transfer even though you won’t be able to finish it. I know many people who’ve got in without finishing their major preps over the past few years.
When you did the Transfer Academic Update, did you mark it so that the second CS course will not be finished?
At the time of the transfer academic update, I didn’t know that they updated the requirements where introductory to programming courses do not satisfy the 2nd requirement. I took CIS 211 (introduction to programming) in Spring 2016 and CIS 226 (java programming) last fall. I enrolled in CIS 252 (java Web and mobile applications, not uc transferable) and CSCI 123 (introduction to C++) this semester. Since introductory classes do not satisfy this requirement anymore, CIS 226 is the only class that will be factored into it which puts me one semester or one class short.
Those classes is what I inputted into the transfer academic update. Was I supposed to be notified that I am missing a requirement ?
Although it says “Introduction to computer science courses do not meet this requirement,” I don’t see it on https://admissions.uci.edu/apply/transfer/requirements.php
Personally I would trust the UCI website since that’s exactly what they’re looking for, which is “One year of transferable computer sciences courses, involving concepts such as those found in Python, Java, C++, or other object-oriented, high-level programming language; data structures; assembly language and machine organization.”
I wouldn’t stress too much if you at least finish 1 year of transferable CS courses and they’re object oriented courses.
At this point I think you should call the CS school department academic counseling office and ask for their thoughts. Typically catalogue rights protect you from changes like that. As a transfer, your UCI catalogue rights would extend 2 years prior to fall 2017, so fall 2015. You could still do the class in summer potentially if you had to and it was offered, but that’s something admissions would have to agree to. Go onto my admission and message your admission counselor about this whole thing.
Socialguy1194,
I contacted them before and they did say that they do honor the agreement from the previous year, however this was a year ago. Email the Donald Bren counselors, they get back in usually a day or two (as opposed to admissions which takes forever, and may give false information): ucounsel@uci.edu
I just contacted admissions at uci. Apparently I am missing a class. Though they did seem out of sorts and were clueless about it at times during the conversation. They put me on hold for about ten minutes twice. They told me to contact my counselor about that through the “mymessage” center?
First they told me that I met the requirements, then they put me on hold for a few minutes. Then they blamed the way my CC is set up because they only have a few transferable programming classes. Ultimately, the lady said I need to take part 2 to C++ to meet the requirement… but she told me I should contact the counselor just to be sure…
@shooguu no the class was just a conversational Spanish class. I was looking forward to speaking a little more colloquially. But I guess that will have to wait. But the time has almost come you guys!!! April is almost here you guys!!!
@Ssocalguy1194 @shooguu @geeksquadd @BackNSchool83 I had the same issue arise when I went to submit my TAG for UCI and noticed the sudden change in requirements. UCI overhauled the entire list of requirements, and at the time it was only a week into the TAG filing period (first week of September), and AFTER the semester had begun at my community college. There was not chance of me getting into any of the “new” required courses. I explained this to the director of the transfer center at my community college, and she was the one who advocated for the amendment in UCI’s requirements. It is very disheartening to see that UCI would change their TAG requirements during the beginning of the TAG submission period. “Honoring” last year’s requirements for engineering is a nice, but how many students followed the previous year’s articulation, and advice of numerous counselors only to potentially get denied or discouraged from applying at all? I know that most of you have worked your butt’s off to get to a position that allows you to be the most qualified candidate for advancing on to a four year university. This post is not about my dislike for UC or UCI for that matter, but about advocating for students that might be in a similar situation.
I get it… things change. But, this was handled extremely poorly. The transfer center director from my college had print outs of each UC’s TAG requirements from August. The dates reflected were from only a couple of weeks before the TAG submission period, and those print outs did not reflect the changes. Thankfully, she took the initiative to say something, and that’s why that short blurb about “honoring” last year’s requirements for engineering majors is there. If anyone gets denied based on their TAG articulation agreement or anything of that nature feel free to contact me. I’ve posted below for people to see the changes for engineering, and specifically for aerospace (my major).

I am very worried cause I applied math as my major for but I TAGed as CS major. What should I do??? Will my application for math be voided?? @BackNSchool83
I believe you can apply to a 1st choice and 2nd choice major. Maybe that would apply here where if you get in for CS then you aren’t math by default. That’s another good question though for admissions, I just have not encountered that issue or heard of someone. I’m sure a reasonable solution can be found, but Ho onto my admissions, which is the portal for UCI applicants and send a message to your counselor. A page back I outline how to send a message step by step f anyone is confused on that. To the gentleman above who found tag requirements had been suddenly changed, yeah that’s very uncool. I know we have catalogue rights though that extend 2 years prior to your first quarter at UCI. Tag it sounds like has its own rules though.
