*OFFICIAL* UF Class of 2020 Applicant and Decision Thread

I’m reading on a different thread that all merit scholarships have already been awarded. True?
We are OOS.

yes, i can confirm that too. Merit awards are handled by admissions not FA office. Need based FA awards are handled by SFA - those are still to be sent. my daughter was an OOS HS grad but due to my being a FL resident, she is classified as instate. I called them to figure out if she was eligible for any merit awards but because of not graduating from a FL HS she was not eligible for either instate or OOS merit scholarships. Lovely. At that point they said all merit awards had been emailed.

@khanam Thank you! We were hoping to get some merit scholarship. Not a deal breaker, fortunately, but pretty close to those more expensive schools that came in with nice offers.

Hi! I have a question about your other schools as my son applied to similar. If you were already accepted to Wake, wouldn’t that have been Early Decision which was binding? My son is deciding between Wake and UF too and had to apply to Wake regular decision because it would have been binding otherwise.

@uoflgirl2020 I got into Howard too XD where do you think you are going? I’m pretty sure I’ll probably go to UF despite the Founder’s scholarship. Feel free to pm me!

Does anyone on this forum know how to decline an acceptance from UF? I cannot find it anywhere on the admissions website or in any emails…only the links to accept and pay the deposit.

@jamini Once you’re in, there is no way out…muhahahahahahaha… >:)

If you can’t decline on this following link, then call UF at 352-392-1365:

Hello Gator88NE,

My son was accepted to UF and I’ve been reading this thread to get some insight about the school, especially since we’re OOS. I’ve read many of your posts and it seems that you have a lot of good information about the school. My son has mainly focused on smaller schools in the Northeast, but visited UF and it’s now one of his top two choices. One of the concerns with UF is the potential class sizes. We’ve read that some classes can have anywhere from 100 to 300 students. What’s the norm for some of the general, first-year classes? We’re concerned about getting “lost” in such a large school and that there isn’t a lot of interaction with professors in these situations. Also, curious about internships and job placement especially for students coming from New York. My son is planning to study business, likely accounting or finance. We’ve read that UF is great at job placement, but have concerns about coming back to NY for internships and after college. We attended a local event in NY and there were members of the Gotham Gators alumni there that said there are great opportunities nationwide for UF graduates, but the people who attended seemed to be the cream of the crop and we’re curious if this is REALLY the norm - especially for OOS graduates.

Any insights that you can provide are appreciated…

@Kodiman We attended the Warrington Ambassador’s tour and were really impressed! They do a lot for mentoring, advising and helping students get internships. In fact, they have the largest recruiting fair in the south east! I would be pretty confident that your son would have great opportunities. I’d contact them about a tour. We were also told that we could drop in for advising if my daughter was interested. I know you are in NY so it may seem to be a big trip but if it would give you peace of mind, it may be worthwhile. I know when we toured there we met a student who did his internship in NY on wall street. They also talked about opportunities for students in the business school student groups to take group trips to places like NY and Chicago and network with execs in big firms. Additionally, as schools go, Florida has one of the strongest alumni networks of any school in the country. One of the benefits of a large school is having that large alumni base. The students in the program talked about how the alumni are very involved and really feel strongly about coming to campus to help give back to the school both as recruiters and by speaking to students and doing workshops. My daughter is a going to be a business major too! One reason she is choosing UF is because she feels it will give her the best opportunities for job placement. They also have a very impressive study abroad program she liked within the business school. There were four countries, I know one location was Dublin, where you can study abroad for a summer taking business courses from actual UF professors AND do an internship in Dublin at the same time. They have a lot of different student organizations and a few combined programs as well. They told us about a special course for first year business students that helps them get involved in the business school too. I think that will help the school feel smaller for your son as well. I hope this helps! Feel free to inbox me if you like

Thanks very much for the information. We visited UF right after my son got accepted, but didn’t get a tour at that time. We’re actually going back and will attend the Warrington tour this Friday. Sounds like it will be worth the trip. Do you know whether the study abroad program in the summer can take the place of the summer class requirement? Just curious since we’re OOS and this could be a good option. My understanding is that you can also take the online courses to meet the summer class requirement, but not 100% sure.

Hi @Kodiman Both the study abroad programs and significant (i.e. major related) summer internships can both can take the place of the summer class requirements.

The Business School has an excellent study abroad program:

You may find linkedin useful, as it allows you to see where UF alumni live and work.

https://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/edu/alumni?id=18120&trk=edu-up-nav-menu-alumni

You’ll notice that the Greater NY city area is one of the top cities for UF alumni (Washington DC is also a popular city). It has almost 10,000 alumni (that are registered in LinkedIn). You can click on that location, and then on some of the careers and see a sampling of alumni that live in that area. Funny fact, when I do that, the first person on the list is my old college roommate, who got his industrial engineering degree at UF, and then his MBA at Rutgers.

UF has a strong MS in Finance program, and on their website, you can review their resumes (by class) and job placements.

http://warrington.ufl.edu/graduate/academics/msf/resumes.asp

The intro classes are very large, usually with 2 or 3 lectures, and one much smaller breakout session, each week. Once you get into your major, the classes get much smaller.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the information!

@Kodiman I both graduated from UF and have recruited there throughout my career (from the midwest). I will say that the placement office is first rate. Top notch leadership who genuinely care about the kids - they are also solid at setting realistic expectations to the students and employers. Having said that, it is what you make of it. I barely used it as a student and fell into a good career (luck). Now that I recruit from them I kick myself for being so risky.

First year class sizes are very large for general requirements - particularly business. Calc, econ 1&2, were two that stick out in my head as huge - giant lectures with a breakout session per week. Didnt get to know teachers. To be successful in that situation you need to be disciplined and not afraid to reach out if you need help (neither a strength of mine in college but I survived). I found out afterwards that very few students use office hours to connect with teachers or TA’s. By my senior year i had classes with under 20 people and got to know several professors.

@Gator88NE Thank you. That link only has “Click continue to pay your tuition deposit and/or confirm your enrollment at the university.” Doesn’t have any option to decline. UF is an incredible school, but I know some need to decline! There must be a way!

@jamini Have them call admissions.

EXTRACIRRICULAR: I started an LLC (Limited Liability Company) and I own it. Many of you may know what it is. It’s called Salt Nation Apparel. We have all kinds of athletic apparel. I figure colleges will find that impressive. I also started a club at my school.

Do you guys think I can get in?
